there is a whole point here about computers and software piracy and how easy it is to make music now without leaving the house but this did not turn out to be the thread for it.

Really? Dude asked a question, maybe not as well phrased as you would've liked, but it's a legitimate query. Perhaps some gentle guidance would've been better than image bombing his thread.

I wonder if Donna Haraway's thoughts on cyborgism and a "powerful infidel heteroglossia" has informed all this stuff. So many post-Silent Shout girls with technology that's almost the 10s equivalent of Lilith Fair, trying to say something new and important and using fresh, seemingly-innovative tools to produce their message.

But probably I'm over-thinking it and it's just the ease of access and familiarity of texture that informs it.

Also the question of the title: never has a question made me prouder to be a 20-something. Now the past eight years were worth something. I had nothing to do really with all these whooshy synths but I will gladly take responsibility for them. Hanging out in a Radio Shack pressing the "demo" button on every mass-market synth, pretending to be Enya at age 10 FINALLY PAYS OFF.

Synths are popular because you can get great sounds out of them without a lot of time-consuming lessons or practice. That's not a snark and not a dis on a generation, it's just a fact.
