Hey 20-somethings...what's with all the synths?

Seriously people. I'm trying. I really want to stay current. But if I hear one more wash of synthesizers going "whaoooooooooo" followed by dreamy vocals, I'm going to barf.

there is a whole point here about computers and software piracy and how easy it is to make music now without leaving the house but this did not turn out to be the thread for it.

Really? Dude asked a question, maybe not as well phrased as you would've liked, but it's a legitimate query. Perhaps some gentle guidance would've been better than image bombing his thread.

"I try to keep up with new music, and I've noticed a trend among young bands to overuse synth washes. Is there some motivator or influence that's causing this? Is it just the ease of technology that's the cause? Where might this lead in terms of the way synths are used?"

That might've gotten a better response? Maybe?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

I am reminded of an ex-roommate who said that music made electronically wasn't as authentic as music made with guitars

tanuki, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

dull post-rock washes made with synths are just as inauthentic as dull post-rock washes made with guitars, though.

I wonder if Donna Haraway's thoughts on cyborgism and a "powerful infidel heteroglossia" has informed all this stuff. So many post-Silent Shout girls with technology that's almost the 10s equivalent of Lilith Fair, trying to say something new and important and using fresh, seemingly-innovative tools to produce their message.

But probably I'm over-thinking it and it's just the ease of access and familiarity of texture that informs it.

Also the question of the title: never has a question made me prouder to be a 20-something. Now the past eight years were worth something. I had nothing to do really with all these whooshy synths but I will gladly take responsibility for them. Hanging out in a Radio Shack pressing the "demo" button on every mass-market synth, pretending to be Enya at age 10 FINALLY PAYS OFF.

This thread, for various reasons, is why I'm going 'troll.'

fwiw, kornrulez, I'm with you. I can't wait till jazz is suddenly popular again and there are like, four bands left in the whole world, because 1) no one knows how to play anything, and 2) no one knows how to be in a band and communicate with actual human beings 'irl.'

I anticipate the customary gifs of old men complaining and whatnot, and I will preemptively say FYM ASMD. Stacy Q and Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam being referenced in reviews POSITIVELY and you're all stroking your beards and nodding in agreement? For shame. Come back, Babyshambles, all is forgiven.

Synths are popular because you can get great sounds out of them without a lot of time-consuming lessons or practice. That's not a snark and not a dis on a generation, it's just a fact.

"I Wonder If I Take You Home" by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam is one of the best records of the '80s, fyi.

i know, i've been a garage fan since milkshakes/nomads years. if the dirtbombs can cover old detroit house tracks, then synthpunk can be revisted as "garage rock". otherwise it IS stagnant bullshit, and fuck that.

uh, no, just because the garage rock umbrella doesn't cover synthpunk that sounds nothing like garage rock (punk is not garage rock) doesn't mean that garage rock is "stagnant bullshit."
