Rolling Stones - It's Only Rock 'n Roll poll

This is, like, one of the only polls I've EVER made! So please treat it with care and respect.

I actually listen to this record all the time. And I love the cover. We can talk about that too, if you like.

Most significant as Mick Taylor's swansong or as the first Stones record drained of any sympathy for the Devil? People seem to want to reappraise Tattoo You much more than this relatively unloved record, but I think it is far more strange and interesting.

One of their worst albums, marginally better than GHS.

"Fingerprint File."

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

I disagree with you!!

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

Although I am listening to "Luxury" as we speak and....haha...oh dear...

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

But there is no way this is worse than Steel Wheels

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

or Dirty Work or A Bigger Bang

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

I'll take "Mixed Emotions" and "Almost Hear You Sigh" over most anything here.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

ha – Dirty Work is nearly a great album but we've been thru this.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but as whole records, Alfred

xp-ugh I hate Dirty Work

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

also Goat's Head Soup is fantastic

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

it's a work of dark, brilliant genius

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

Anyway, I like the ballads on this record, and I like Time Waits For No-One.

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

But I like, I think, pretty much every Stones ballad ever recorded.

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

I mean "If You Really Want To Be My Friend" is pretty generic sounding, but the sentiment is really cool.

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

"It's Only Rock and Roll" is the most enervated song about rock ever recorded. A recent entry in this category: Wilco's "Heavy Metal Drummer."

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

should be a thread about that

buzza, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

I have a very emotional connection to this record, I think. I was way into it in college. I would sit and listen to it in my room and I would wander the wilds of Norfolk on winter nights listening to it on my discman (haha).

xp-yes!

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

x-post to alfr*d

"Ever recorded," I think you're being a tad dramatic. I don't agree with you about either of those songs; and I do not think Diry Work was a great album.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:44 (fourteen years ago)

Title track the obvious winner.

Mark G, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

I think you're being a tad dramatic

I think that's just what he does

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:47 (fourteen years ago)

should be a thread about that

good idea – it's all yours!

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

Goat's Head Soup is great.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

'Time Waits for No-one' is one of my favourite Stones songs but the album is kind of patchy (although I'd rate it higher than Black And Blue). I've always really hated the title track too.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:20 (fourteen years ago)

hmm never listened to this one

Artful Dodderer (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

Goats Head Soup doesn't quite clear the bar set by the previous four Stones albums, but it's still a great attempt at trying to do so. I've always found it to be a very underrated record and it's a record I do have plenty of time for and do enjoy a hell of a lot.

It's Only Rock'n'Roll on the other hand, I've never really liked as a whole, although 'Time Waits For No One' remains one of my Top 10 personal Stones songs of all time. If only the rest of the album was of the same quality.

I guess this is what frustrates me about this particular Stones record, and numerous Stones records (but not all) that came after: lord knows they had the capability to come up with an absolute gem, but when you listen to the stuff that surrounds those gems you think "what the fuck are you doing, guys!?"

God help anyone who votes 'Luxury' in this poll. Seriously. One of the most loathsome tracks I've ever heard, and then some.

Turrican, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

― curmudgeon, Tuesday, February 28, 2012 10:44 AM

I didn't say it was – I said it almost was. I wish Woody and Keith played guitar like this more often, or that Jagger had continued to sing with such ferocity. His last bunch of good lyrics too.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

goat's head soup isn't perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than it's only rock 'n roll. better than dirty work, better than black and blue.

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe, I might tie it with Black and Blue

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

Haha Luxury!!

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

let's listen to it together

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

I just realized that the vocal makes me think of Guns Of Brixton. Uh oh...

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

Have always a soft spot for the much-hated "Luxury" because it falls into that beloved category of early seventies fake-reggae.

Averroes's Search Engine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

Better than "Cherry Oh Baby"?

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

B&B isn't great either but "Memory Motel" and "Fool to Cry" sound nothing like the Stones recorded at the time; the former sounds like Roxy Music recording a Big Star ballad. And "Hand of Fate" and "Crazy Mama" are better shit-kickers.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

Especially fake reggae featuring percussion by Ray Cooper.

"Cherry Oh Baby" is OK too.

Averroes's Search Engine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

falls into that beloved category of early seventies fake-reggae.

is that what this is...? Charlie can't seem to get a handle on the one-drop rhythm if so. It doesn't strike me as particularly terrible, but it is quite boring.

Artful Dodderer (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

'Embarrassing' is a word that I'd use to describe 'Luxury'. 'Shite' is another.

Turrican, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

Voted Time, but nearly went for Fingerprint File. Haven't played this album in something like 15 yers though.

GHS is indeed better. DW is one of the very few Stones albums I've never heard.

I Fucked Up (jer.fairall), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 02:21 (fourteen years ago)

Underrated album: Rolling Stones' "Dirty Work"

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 02:29 (fourteen years ago)

Ugh. Their worst 70s record, obviously. Went with the awful Time Waits for No One just for Mick Taylor's beautiful "swan song" of a solo (as admrl put it so well). I guess FF is alright

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 03:17 (fourteen years ago)

Haven't listened to Black and Blue in at leat as long, but I remember it sucking pretty hard.

I Fucked Up (jer.fairall), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

it sucked in the seventies, as it were.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

Lol, I voted Luxury. I didn't know it was so hated!

Godzilla vs. Rodan Rodannadanna (The Yellow Kid), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 06:51 (fourteen years ago)

Second choice was Ain't Too Proud To Beg

Godzilla vs. Rodan Rodannadanna (The Yellow Kid), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 06:51 (fourteen years ago)

It's been a long time since I played this one, it's better than I remembered. "Time Waits for No One" is great and the other ballads stand up pretty well too. "Fingerprint File" is a good preview of the next few albums. "Dance Little Sister" is sort of a throwback to "Carol" by the tighter 70s band -- I like it.

Brad C., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

I like this LP way more than Goat's Head Soup and Black and Blue. Heartbreaker is probably the best track between the three records though.

Personally, I really dig Fingerprint File. That is one ice cool coked up paranoid track. It's a way better than most of the times the Stones tried to tap into 70s funk.

I wish Undercover of the Night had this kind of production sound. I really dig that tune, but this kind of 70s sound would have worked better with it.

earlnash, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

haha I like this one! I listen to it more than GHS or B&B. goin to have to think on this.

"Tom Waits for Every One"

Mark G, Thursday, 1 March 2012 07:24 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Friday, 2 March 2012 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

That version of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" really sucks.

โตเกียวเหมียวเหมียว aka Wendy Carlos the Jackal (Mount Cleaners), Friday, 2 March 2012 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

Time Waits For No One would be fine without those lyrics! Just terrible...

Iago Galdston, Friday, 2 March 2012 00:30 (fourteen years ago)

the chorus in "till the next goodbye" kinda plods but there are some great throwaway lines re your cure-all from new-aw-leans and your louisiana recipes. sounds a little like some van morrison would have done around the same time.

xxxposts: ugh, voted luxury. calling it "fake reggae" doesn't even make sense. *maybe* there'e some Jamaican influence on the Stones already but the rhythm isn't really close to reggae. GHS sounds better but this is a stronger but not great songs record overall, period.

epigram addict (outdoor_miner), Saturday, 3 March 2012 02:56 (fourteen years ago)

You're saying I should take back my vote?

Why Does Blecch People Never Want To Redd? (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 3 March 2012 03:11 (fourteen years ago)

nope. i think that luxury is just kinda unique and one of the three best songs on it's only...(including the title cut and time waits). those three songs, to me, are so much better than the three best songs on GHS (Angie, 1000 years, Heartbreaker) i kinda don't get the hate for this record. maybe i miss the point of the term "fake reggae", but the Stones proved they could handle reggae: "Crackin' uP" and "Too Rude" are two great examples. MUCH prefer the original of Cherry Oh though

epigram addict (outdoor_miner), Saturday, 3 March 2012 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

The lyrics to 'If You Can't Rock Me' make me laugh. Basically Jagger saying if some chick doesn't wanna ball, he'll have no trouble finding someone who will.

Turrican, Saturday, 3 March 2012 18:17 (fourteen years ago)

he's right

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 3 March 2012 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

In 1974 he would have definitely been right. The whole song is just basically bragging about it... definitely the type of song that only someone who has been a rich and very famous rock star for so long would have even dared to put out.

Turrican, Saturday, 3 March 2012 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

six years pass...

THE BANDS ONSTAGE AND IT'S JUST ONE OF THOSE NIIIIGHTS...

Christ, I fucking love this song.
