The Chap

we've had threads on The Chap before but based on specific albums, thought we could just a general band thread.

the new one - "we are nobody" - is on spotify and sounds very good to me. a little lighter/more whimsical in tone than "well done europe" but not a vast departure, which is ok with me

I knew it was coming, but didn't realize it was already here. Will listen to it today.

Yeah, it ended up being pretty good.

Gorgeous album, up there with the last three (god they're consistent!) and maybe even better. Opening track is WONDERFUL, totally Beta-Band-ish but with the Chap sass. Title-track is a superb wig-out - throughout this album, great melodies are given imaginative arrangements, which is a surefire way to grab my attention. The only weird note is the penultimate track, which combines one of their loveliest tunes with sans doute their most abhorrent lyric - while the transition from whimsy to tragedy is mirrored excellently by the music, the whole thing is just a bit upsetting.

Listening to it again now - holy shit yeah this might not be their most interesting (Ham) but goddamn it's their most assured record, absolutely. Every track is a gem, and also shorter than it seems (in a good way). I don't even care that they're almost exclusively in the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus mode now. File alongside the new Field Music at the pinnacle of British pop circa 2012.

I love this band!

video for "what did we do" is pretty weak relative to their past videos but it is probably my favorite song on the new album:

three years pass...

New one is sounding very good. We're so far outside their 'moment' that this feels like a genuinely under-the-radar discovery - and it seems like they no longer give even the slightest fuck what anyone thinks. Noticed that about a few briefly-hyped indie artists recently.

Christ, this is great. Might be their best one.

four years pass...

they have a new one out called "digital technology" that i'm listening to now. sounds very chap-y (that's chappie). so far "i recommend you do the same" is a highlight. are me and imago the only people who like this band

hopefully not!

i'm not usually into music that's this british but they still do it for me

na (NA), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 21:32 (four years ago) link

fuck

new one's decent and i particularly like the opening track - previous album 'the show must go on' was absolutely classic tho

woah this is cool

my only complaint is there should have been no other words than him singing "maaark e. smiiiith" over and over for one hour straight

really fucking awesome band though, never heard of them

obv not possible on youtube
but this would be cool if you could mute and un-mute each square like a multitrack board and see what exactly each part was

check out either 'mega breakfast' (for proper songs for real folk) or 'the show must go' (for all-round powerful art-rock shenanigans; see also 'ham')

imago, Thursday, 3 December 2020 20:45 (three years ago) link

cool will do, this youtube thing is so awesome

imago do you like hen ogledd?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 December 2020 20:49 (three years ago) link

"well done europe" is probably my favorite album of theirs but they are pretty consistent

na (NA), Thursday, 3 December 2020 21:18 (three years ago) link

and they do have a kind-of best-of album called "we are the best" if you want an easy starting place

na (NA), Thursday, 3 December 2020 21:19 (three years ago) link

^^^both true

hen ogledd are good but patchy imo, both their recent albums have some very fine work on them
