I kind of love it when this happens and it makes me reassess the sonic signifiers of whatever I am blasting. Like the day when an elderly and really inebriated gentleman on the tube asked to listen to my earbuds. I was listening to Yerself Is Steam and he basically got an earful of skyscraping feedback, but he proceeded to kind of do a weird smiling tapdance to it. I wonder what he heard in his head?

Also yesterday I was listening to some very early acid house in my car and I pulled up alongside these latino kids who were probably like 12/13 and it took me a moment to realize one of them was Shuffling to the bassline vibrations from my car. It actually worked pretty well and made me think about the amazing ability of propulsive bass to connect 20+ years of dance music history in a teenager's head.

Do you have experiences like these to share?

Dudes at the bus stop grooving to Tenth Ave Freeze Out blasting from my car.
Not really unexpected, though.

I remember years ago my Grandmother walking into the room and hearing me play Mogwai's "Tracy".

"This is pretty, I'm surprised at you." I was a bit annoyed actually.

My Grandma is big into music, she even gave me a bunch of her old Moody Blues and Santana LPs that she used to get stoned to. She asks me what I'm into now and I play for her some Can. The first song is "Pinch" and she goes "I really don't like it. There's no soul in this. No groove or anything. Just a bunch of guys making noise." So I skipped it to "One More Night", which she loved!

When driving w/ my Dad - I was playing Van der Graaf Generator's Godbluff, he says "Which Bowie album is this, this is great!"

Recall my old man nodding his approval to the intro of Small Change, "Better than the usual rubbish you listen to", till Tom Waits' voice comes in, and this appalled look comes onto his face. He was strictly easy listening.
