yes okay can someone tell me why my pc has DELETED EVERY MP3 I'VE DOWNLOADED SINCE JULY 2001 including EVERYTHING that was inside my soulseek folder, EFFECTIVELY SENDING ME INTO THE PAST?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

It found out your last name!

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

the terrorists have already won, etc.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

first person to tell me how to recover my files gets to learn my last name

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

download them all again.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

one other thing: many more megabytes of mp3s have gone missing than the free space on my hard drive indicates (i'm not sure any space has been freed, actually) leading me to hope that my precious, precious music yet resides somewhere in the recesses of my computer

oh yes one more other thing: fuck fuck fuck fuck FUCK

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This sounds like the ILOVEYOU bug, which destroyed jpgs, and changed the file extensions on MP3s, but left the files entact.

Get yr ass to mcafee.com, boy..

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 19 September 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

to combat my depression i listened to all of 'blonde on blonde' in an attempt to find the secret portal to pinefox-land where mp3s and such don't exist and even if they did they'd be horrible

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

jesus mitch! why didn't you just slit your wrists in that case?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

If your file extensions have been changed, try a search through your computer for some of the file names (song names) that you remember, and see if they turn up somewhere with a different extension or something. I don't know if there are any undelete programs that you can download, though I just saw a new version of Undelete has just come out: www.execsoft.com (click here for a direct link). Not sure if this would find your files, or if the virus (??) would have munched them so thoroughly that they were written over or something nasty like that.

Just as a side note, where was your soulseek folder located, and did you recently upgrade it or Windows? If it was in the Program Files folder somewhere or in your My Documents folder somewhere, sometimes an upgrade of either can wipe out everything that was there before.

the secret portal to pinefox-land where mp3s and such don't exist and even if they did they'd be horrible

it's a truly beautiful place, and one worth spending time in.

mitch this is your second best thread ever

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

sean: props for the advice, yeah i tried searching for the filenames and no dice. and i did upgrade soulseek fairly recently, BUT i had two separate folders for the different versions so i don't think it was that, also my pc ate a whole lot of mp3s that were in a diff folder. also, this undelete thing sounds interesting, thanks for the heads up.

josh: i'm glad my suffering amuses you.

Mitch i think you need to see the good side on it. Theres nothing better than watching your mp3 collection grow and get big. Whne i got my new pc early this year every mp3 was a important big thing cos i had to listen to them all the time. Now there is just this big mass of files that most of them i must have only heard 5 times and really only downloaded it to keep the connection goin while im reading a big text or chatting

vic (vicc13), Saturday, 21 September 2002 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

oh it does, it does

Josh (Josh), Saturday, 21 September 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
two days ago, for no apparent reason other than now everything *else* on the computer is fucked up, my pc returned ALL the mp3s it deleted/hid/whatevered.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 16 November 2002 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Your computer has a great sense of humor.

Dan I., Saturday, 16 November 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, especially when i had an animated movie to submit yesterday and it ended up being shown without text/narrative cos funny boy here refused to open flash/flash text animators.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 16 November 2002 09:35 (twenty-three years ago)

mitch there is something wrong with your computer possibly

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 16 November 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

haha this am i slowly coming around to realizing: complete reformat next week hopefully

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 16 November 2002 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i am glad you got yr mp3s back: i am still too dumm to find good easy non-filepile ways of getting hold of mp3s for me (= i use a mac) (graham showed me how to access soulseek but the instructions were longer than the ones NASA supply to build yr own spaceshuttle and orbit pluto) (so i did that instead)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 16 November 2002 12:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i use a mac at my place of higher learning: w/o having access to virtual pc/pluto, i use(d, actually, no more macs for fine arts students next year) limewire, which is alright. and there are several other applications mentioned on that other recent "mac mp3" thread (such as "hotline" and "iswipe") that i didn't get a chance to use but you may have better luck. also, one of out every 589 'download full albumz here!" sites works.. (i previewed all of "under construction" that way)
