Ladytron 'Light & Magic'

i've had their new album for 6 weeks or so (downloaded from soulseek) and am wondering who else here has heard it and what they think. its pretty much 604 version 2 - more of the same but perhaps better produced technically, some neat ideas and inventive tricks and twists, great lyrical subject matter...i think they may have cast off any accusations of tweeness with this one as its generally harder sounding than 604 altho many tracks on it do follow the same formulas, patterns...listenin' to 'Blue Jeans' for example - very similar to 'Another Breakfast With You' - some may find the repetition a disappointment but i genuinely find Ladytron's music stimulating and stand-out and i welcome another similarly-sized slice of a very similar pie, albeit with a sharper taste

Fuck Ladytron, that shit is so.....

I still prefer 604, but by a very small margin. It's like watching Smokey & the Bandit, and then sitting through Smokey & the Bandit II. The original was great, but the sequel is so similar it's not as entertaining.

They are pretty much my favourite band on the planet, at present. Have ordered it on import from amazon, if it's not one of the greatest things ever I'm not going to be able to leave the house for several weeks.

i think at the mo i also prefer 604 but i think technically Light & Magic is kinda better - if that makes any sense...its a bit like the new Underworld album - nothing you've not heard from them before, but still pretty fine fare

Just listening to it for the first time. :) First minutes some thoughts along the lines of "they blew it" after that "this is pretty good stuff". There's some really great songs on it with some memorable melodies (esp. The Reason Why and Seventeen). Nothing approaching 'Playgirl' though.

i think 'blue jeans' is better than playgirl, all of the weaker songs on the new album are in front, beginning with song 6 it is great all the way to the finish.

If anybody can burn me a copy of this asap I will give up the toenails of my firstborn. And a pint.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 20 September 2002 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this record actually out in Europe? I know it's just come out in North America.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Friday, 20 September 2002 07:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i've never heard 604 (sometimes i don't feel like following a hype, although mostly i do...) but this morning i heard a cdr of light & magic and really really liked it. it sounds gorgeous, some great melodies. but maybe it's early days to draw any definitive conclusions after one listen...

Charlie, no access to slsk? it's there...

willem (willem), Friday, 20 September 2002 08:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Why is it so goddamn long?

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i've checked soulseek and it didn't seem 2 b on there.
don't relish the thought of trawling again at 56kbps
track by track, so...which are the pop ones ?
'blue jeans' right ? (modern life is rubbsih derivation alert)
and which others ?

thanx chaps/ (chapesses ?)

piscesboy, Friday, 20 September 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It is sorta long, isn't it? Or feels that way, Andy's right. I liked it but I'll have to give it a relisten.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, that's my feeling too (esp. that it feels long). About 10 songs and it would be perfect.

Omar, Friday, 20 September 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Long is good! value for money if nothing else...not that i spent any money on it - yet - but i dont understand how less material could make it a better album unless you feel its all too samey

blueski, Friday, 20 September 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Precisely that last point, blueski. It's good but after a point, it all blends together.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 September 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

*ROCKIST ALERT*

Very rarely does an album consisting of four-minute pop songs have any reason to last more than 45 minutes (exceptions: compilations, Metal Box, etc). This one needs to have five songs knocked off it, but I can't tell you which five yet because the record turns into a buzz once it rolls onto track 11. "We have the space so we might as well use it."

I hate to roll out Tarkus again haha, but even ELP managed to keep it around 40 minutes!

Don't mind me. I've been programmed.

Charlie, no access to slsk? it's there...

That's as maybe but I sadly don't have downloadability round my way. Grrr. If anyone can help, there's a shiny penny with your name on it.
