ILM - Q magazine vote rigging scheme type thing!?

Afternoon all,

Just wondering whether people might enjoy putting forward a very ILM-centric nomination or two in Q Magazine's latest Top 100 albums list?

The link is here :

http://promo.q4music.com/q4music/top10albums/

My main reason for posting this question is that i get tired of seeing Astral Weeks and All Mod Cons & other dull regulars in these list things... i think it might be a wee bit more interesting if we co-operated and vaulted a rather different choice into the top 100.

The first thing to do is determine whether people are at all interested in such a cunning venture....

The second is to decide on the album to give an "extra boost" up their chart.

"Loveless" seems an obvious choice to me.... its a quality record that most people on this forum seem to enjoy ...although it make the top 100 without any extra help from this community - but what fun (!) it might be to get it into the top 10 even?

Maybe this is the most peurile thing that the pseuds among you have ever read... but it seems to me like a laugh to co-operate & attempt such a feat!

Whatcha think?

DC.

Other than "Loveless", i think that Orbital's "In Sides" would be a great choice... that record is ace and never seems to make these polls.

Ideas/opinions ?

DaveyC, Friday, 20 September 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

there is no option for singles though:(

gareth (gareth), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup - fraid this poll is just for albums Gareth...

Not think its a fun activity then eh?

It needs to be something Q 'doesn't like' surely.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

something Q doesn't like- ddin't they do a top 50 worst albums of all time list. lets name those! anyone for metal machine music...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll open a new thread for that.

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Friday, 20 September 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

how about trying to get 'Three Feet High & rising' or 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back' right up there?

blueski, Friday, 20 September 2002 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Those two sound like token albums that would already get in though, Blueski. Some WuTang perhaps? Kelis? Such a shame it isn't singles. Haven't read Q for a while so I'm not sure of their current angle, although I'm sure it hasn't changed much.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 20 September 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Announcing a vote rigging scheme doesn't seem the best way to subvert a poll as they'll probably discount a percentage of the votes for Loveless or In Sides or whatever.

So in that case everyone should rid the poll by voting for Dark side of the moon, Revolver, Nevermind, OK Computer etc

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 20 September 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

rid = rig

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 20 September 2002 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Vote for Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Magical Mystery Tour, Insecticide, and The Bends.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 20 September 2002 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

well up for this one !
i think we can all see where
dom is going. i'll echo that
+ go for 'here my dear' 'the second coming' 'steel wheels'
'parade' 'secret life of plants' and 'a storm in heaven'.
oh and a really obscuro carole king.

piscesboy, Friday, 20 September 2002 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeh - maybe openly using the "rigging" word was a bad idea.... still theres nothing to stop people lobbying among friends to generate support for a particular record?

Maybe Tom's idea of nominating an album ignored by Q would be the correct course of action...

Any suggestions...?

DaveyC, Friday, 20 September 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet Q won't have Daphne & Celeste's I Didn't Say That! They will have at least 50 worse albums in their final list. Maybe 80.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 September 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's all vote for the first Aqua album! Again and again and again!

That'll show them.

But yeah, as far as albums that actually deserve to be in there, InSides is a good call. Plus, it means loads of Q readers will go out and buy it and ensure its place in the canon forever and ever and ever..

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Aqua deffo. D+C=v.canonical

Graham (graham), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

My Life Story's "The Golden Mile". Just think: they'll have to include a short written piece about why it's a classic album. Ha!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

D&C = v.canonical in your head Graham possibly not in Q's. Do you have any actual grounds for disliking it? (NB I am quite prepared to believe Aqua is just as good)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

The exercise is pointless if all it's going to achieve is pushing Loveless five places up the chart. Like, woohoo, who cares? Pushing a well known ha-ha the Q bods will be shocked by this record seems almost as daft as it will have no effect beyond making the odd buffer splutter into their cup of tea. Better to pick some semi-forgotten pop gem or relatively underheard modern thing (w/v little Q-cred), actually get the Q readers intrigued and, hey, maybe introduce some people to something they might never have otherwise heard. Cupid and Psyche 85 maybe?

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 20 September 2002 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't understand Tom's post at all. I like D+C, I just would not be surprised to see them in, well maybe not Q's, but someone like them's Poll of all time. They did get a lot of [not necc positive, but whatever] attention from the weeklies, didn't they?

Graham (graham), Saturday, 21 September 2002 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

"Teen Spirit" by A-Teens on the other hand. k-punXor.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 21 September 2002 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd put Brown before In Sides any day of the week, especially today.

Charlie (Charlie), Saturday, 21 September 2002 05:50 (twenty-three years ago)

how about the first Prodigy album?

blueski, Saturday, 21 September 2002 08:27 (twenty-three years ago)

''The exercise is pointless if all it's going to achieve is pushing Loveless five places up the chart.''

no lets see if we can push it up to no1. K. shields would go insane then, he would nevah come up with a follow up.

anyway, has anyone voted yet?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 21 September 2002 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

haha aqua's first is great so let's vote for aqua's second!! that has only ONE good song on it

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 21 September 2002 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

No mark lets make up an album and vote for it, I nominate Selected Experimental Horse Music 92-99 by Unknown artists.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 21 September 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Unselected Experimental Horse Music 92-99 by known artists but we're not going to say who they are

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 21 September 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

George Clinton: the Meatl Years

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 21 September 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, make up albums by bands that do exist -

Pavement - "Horses and Espionage"

Lou Reed - "The Vienna Sessions"

Annie Lennox - "Spiral Staircase"

Enya - "The Passions of the Sea"

Moloko - "Kingdom Pheel"

David Bowie - "Witch Doctor Blues"

Aphex Twin - "Panipa Gravel Aviary"

Marvin Gaye - "No Ticket, No Moves"

Peter Cetera - "Oh Woman of Figs"

Ash - "Bladehoney"

Stone Temple Pilots - "Vortexualism"

Lynskey, Sunday, 22 September 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How about voting for an album that can be confirmed to exist but almost no one has heard -- Afghan Whigs, Big Top Halloween?

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 22 September 2002 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you are hopelessly optimistic, Graham, if you think that Daphne & Celeste will get near Q's top 1000, let alone top 100. They will have theEagles and Stereophonics and so on hundreds of places higher than D&C, in the unlikely event any Q reader votes for them at all. In fact, I'd be hard pressed to think of any mag that would give them a chance - the poppiest mags tend to only be interested in what's happening now, not establishing any all-time canon.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 September 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

It needs to be something Q 'doesn't like' surely.
So we should all nominate The Greatest Hits of Ernest Tubb or something else super obscure and not 'Q-Mag-ish' at all.
Vote for Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Magical Mystery Tour, Insecticide, and The Bends.
Naw for obscurity's sake:
for Piper at the Gates of Dawn read: Klaatu's "Klaatu"
for Magical Mystery Tour read: Hermans Hermits "Best of"
for Incesticide read: Tad's "Inhaler"
for The Bends read: Kula Shakur "Pigs Peasants and Astronauts"
If any of these take the #2 spot, then we know that ILM has some clout

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Monday, 23 September 2002 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just put in my votes. Now lets see how far up the chart Deisel and Dust gets.

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Monday, 23 September 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I voted Loveless, though it's never got in the Q's top 100 before, but you never know.

linkypink, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

This links is to the 2003 survey, isn't it?

A bit too late to vote in that one, even though it could have needed some changes as the list contained way too much R&B and way too little Britpop.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Btw. the correct link is http://promo.q4music.com/q4music/greatest_albums/2005/index.html

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

And I don't think I voted for any of the usual favourites other than "Pet Sounds". However, probably not a lot of typical ILM faves in my selections either :)
