Recent tracks you heard that made you go 'WHAT the hell is THAT?!!!'

i'm tryin hard to think myself...i'm sure this thread will degenerate into people just citing just examples of tracks that made them REALLY go just 'ooh thats cool, i like that' but thats NOT what i mean, so think hard and let me know - cheers

it doesnt HAVE to be something that did something inventive or 'new' but thats the sort of criteria i would look to...recent tracks i've heard that have really given me a buzz e.g. 'Parker Tapes' or 'Private Press' or some of the Neptunes stuff or The Streets or 'Machine Says Yes' or 'Evil Heat' i'm not wanting to mention here as they didnt really have quite that ultimate 'FUCKING HELL!' effect...same goes for more subtle tracks like 'Pyramid Song' (something i wasnt used to hearing for sure, sounded technically different if nothing else)

it easier when you're younger and less jaded. back in 95/96 a lot of the Armand Van Helden remixes (Tori Amos, Genaside II, Sneaker Pimps, CJ Bolland) were having this effect on me, as were the Goldie and Roni Size albums, as was DJ Shadow, as were things like 'Chemical Beats' and 'Da Funk'...i want that feeling back. i'd like to be blown away by something again but perhaps i'm too cynical and gettin on a bit...regardless of this it would be interesting to see what YOUR examples are...its more about a sound in a track that triggers that sense of amazement

thinkin about it more...i'm tempted to pick 'Addictive' for THAT sample and because i heard it on the radio and didnt know what it was or who did it (unlike all the recent albums i mentioned above) - THIS is the situation i'm thinkin about

Most recent thing I heard that made exclamation points appear over my head was a track by a band called Acid Ape called "Mouth Full."

I found it here: http://stonerrock.bla-bla.com/

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

a similar situation to this is when you hear a track and think 'this is great' and then you wonder who it is and you assume its someone new - but it turns out to be someone you knew of but didnt think would make a track like this...this happened to me the other week with the new Bis single

blueski, Saturday, 21 September 2002 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a new Bis single? I don't know what surprises me more, that there is one or that they're still around. Did they finally transform into Duran Duran, then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 September 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

ghost lawns by anti pop consortium made my ears prick up mightily the first couple of times I heard it.
bis are actually a lot better now than they ever have been. more electro, less cheesy.

simon 803 (simon 803), Saturday, 21 September 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

one of the songs (?) on Bobby Conns "Golden Age" where he is singly sweetly and says "fuck" really loud.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 21 September 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Jurgen Vries "The Theme", in a club context, this summer. The track gets mixed in, you've got this nice rhythm track, pretty fat bassline, obviously by an experienced producer. Then you've got a buildup, OK, we've heard that before...but then that "wailing martian" synth theme kicks in and the whole crowd goes "What the FUCK?", and the it tears the roof off the sucker. The thing with this track is, it gets very cheesy when you hear it on TV/radio without proper bottom end. It's all about the combination of that bassline and the martian synth theme, once the bassline is removed it's very weak. Perhaps this is the flipside of that other thread on 'brick wall' compression and major label productions - "The Theme" obviously is engineered for dancefloor soundsystems with *massive* bass capabilities, and not voor tinny radio speakers.

Akufen - Deck the House

Keith McD (Keith McD), Sunday, 22 September 2002 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

it was a while ago now, but

vitalic - la rock

really was a true 'what the FUCK!?' track.

minna (minna), Sunday, 22 September 2002 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Kill Them All (bastards! bastards!) - Berto Pisano

kinski (kinski), Sunday, 22 September 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Some freaking annoying abrasive electronic noise track that my housemate was playing, no doubt. It really has been an experience, living with Daren, realising that other people can look for TOTALLY different things in music than you do. I seriously do not understand what he hears in it. It's arrhythmic, atonal (in many places, it doesn't not even use anything recognisable as tones), and totally abstract.

I don't know if my reaction is standard adult confronted with the new "that's not music!" or if this really is non-music. I just get the "What the fuck IS that?" reaction to his stuff quite often. (Though I suspect because this makes me go WTF? in a bad way, that's not the intent of this thread.)

kate, Sunday, 22 September 2002 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

kate- I've got a pile of xenakis CDs in here.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 22 September 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Phantomsmasher album (originally called Atomsmasher, name changed for legal reasons). Incredible. Beyond description... ok, Roni Size gone gabba speed thrash, but beautiful with it. Out on Ipecac. (There's a download on www.southern.net)

Marinaorgan (Marina Organ), Sunday, 22 September 2002 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The Flying Luttenbachers- Infection and Decline had me doing somersaluts round the house. Not many can cover Magma nad pull it off

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 22 September 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

some band called "upsilon acrux" - like ruins meet neu but so much better than that might suggest. instumental stuff that makes don caballero sound like the no-brain one trick pony it really is. that, and i still never really get over conlon nancarrow's studies for player piano

bob snoom, Sunday, 22 September 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Can you get the name of this track for me, Kate?

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Sunday, 22 September 2002 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

The slamming metallic doors for a beat (or whatever it is!) in Grindin' by the Clipse, produced by the Neptunes.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 22 September 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Sitting on top of my housemate's stereo is the new Coldplay album and some Plaid. I'm guessing it wasn't the Coldplay, but I doubt it was the Plaid, either. Will ask him when he gets home. If he ever gets home, he went on another internet date AGAIN last night...

kate, Sunday, 22 September 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

The Meatls - Take Da Hoochie, they way he keeps screaming hoochie like in the end of Thong Song is just brilliant man

vic (vicc13), Sunday, 22 September 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Silver Screen Shower Scene Jacques Lu Cont remix, oh my god indeed.

Bah I do this with everything though!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 22 September 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Flying Luttenbachers RULE! But where's this Magma cover from, then?

Hmmm, that reminds me... The Locust... something to do with the above

I think either/or bands have involvement with Arab On Radar - another whatthefu- kind of band.

Marinaorgan (Marina Organ), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Scott Walker - Tilt Has anyone heard that!

Chris Krohn, Monday, 23 September 2002 04:07 (twenty-three years ago)

the Cato Salsa Experience.. can't remember the song name

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 23 September 2002 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

BIG Scott Walker/Tilt piece planned for the Church of Me in due course.

Things that have made me go: "what the hell is that?" Well, practically everything new that I've heard in the last 3-4 months (plus everything old that I hadn't heard before or not heard for some years) which clearly must be a good sign.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 23 September 2002 08:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Rah! I look forward to that -- it's a great album but I've never quite been able to describe why it's great.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 September 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Flying Luttenbachers RULE! But where's this Magma cover from, then?

I think they cover "De Futura", which is from Udu Wudu.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 23 September 2002 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

90 percent of what is *out there*: What the hell is that (crap)?!?

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 23 September 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

nath is wise!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 23 September 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard everything "out there" so I can't comment on whether or not 90% of it is "crap." All I know is that, if art is sufficiently great, it will find its own way to me, sooner or later. The greatest ecstasy is when something hits you in a "what the hell" fashion and you realise that you are the only person who could conceivably have reacted "what the hell"? The art finding its rightful consumer?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 23 September 2002 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

marcello is wiser!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

But is he? Marcello can't comment on everything out there, but he knows that he's the only one who could've reacted to something in a certain way. It's Zen or madness, I say!

dleone (dleone), Monday, 23 September 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

More like my first year philosophy essays which were the same as everyone else's, i.e. you can't prove that you can see anything other than your retina, the impossibility of learning about philosophy in a course which was actually the HISTORY of philosophy, etc.

But then this thread would divebomb into a deadend of prove you are you, no I am not Pinefox, I am reacting and it's only my word against yours, your word against mine is only a secondary reflection of my word against yours, following which the only sensible course of action is to put on the "Westwood Vol 3" and fling oneself around one's front room in sub-Dionysian delirium.

Since you asked.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 23 September 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

philosophy essays

MADNESS! Actually, ever since you said Starsailor was #3 all-time, I'm inclined to take your word for it.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

But Marcello what about clubbing, er sorry to ask such a predictable question, for me at least.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

the bit on the kid 606 missy remix where he segues 'big pimping' 'ugly' and 'get ur freak on' over a gabbabass break sends shivers up my shaft. and the bit at the end where the 'take on me' riff kicks in... hurrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhh.
also, that nore song 'grimy' has a really shivery acid synth noise and when pharrel goes 'nigga WHOOP the law' makes me go woah. at times.
and the bit on 'you don't wanna fuck with me' by odb where he goes "ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHH! if you really wanna cummmmmm, the cocaine got ya pussy numbbbbbbbbbb'. what a great mc. really.

llenhcs, Monday, 23 September 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

(Marcello ((and others)), I was merely kidding.)

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan: what about clubbing?

Nath: yes I know you were, read my reply again ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

The new ep by The Dillinger Escape plan, with Mike Patton on vocals. Especially "When Good Dogs Do Bad".
