Anyone heard the new John Squire album? What do you think?

I thought this review from Norman Records was entertaining:

John Squire releases his debut solo album. Apparently this is great. We thought it was fucking awful and it makes Dire Straits sound cutting edge. The singing is rank, the tunes are painfully average. It makes you wonder why people bother. I wonder what his mother must be thinking now..... This is just shit, shit, shit shit. Trad old gimmers rock and if you skip through the tracks it gets worse and worse. Plodding tedious rock. In a word it's fucking dreadful which I know is technically 2 words but one word didn't cut the mustard. It's a mockery of a sham of a trevesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery.

Interesting... I've heard about 4-5 tracks and I think that that particular assessment is a bit excessive. My own 2-cents based on a quick listen is that it's not "fucking awful" by a long shot, at least in the grand scheme of music albums (there's a lot of shit out there that's far worse than this!). But I didn't find it particularly mindblowing either.

I think I need to hear the whole album a few times before I can make a serious judgement though.

I've heard a few tracks, and the singing is not as bad as you might have thought. The music IS fucking awful, though.

I like this album. It's a grower.

Nah, I'd want at least a tenner.

.. before you'd take it away?

Yep. More if they wanted me to listen to it.

it sounds nothing like the Stone Roses, I'll give you that. But in its own quiet and unassuming way, it's a warm and contemplative album. His voice certainly requires some getting used to, but there are apparently people here who think Tom Waits has an agreeable voice, which makes me feel that Squire's voice isn't so bad.
