I looked at my list of the best albums of this year, and I realised it wasn't really a good reflection of the albums I've been listening to this year. MY album of the year = "Locust Abortion Technician" by the Butthole Surfers. What great, previously-released albums did you discover this year?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 23 September 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

"Will the Circle Be Unbroken" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (w/Mother Maybelle Carter, Roy Acuff, Doc Watson, many others). Beeeeeeyootiful beautiful 3-record set, pristine, gorgeous sounds, classic songs, a weird moment in history, great banter between songs, a very natural, unforced traditionalism at work. Discovered en route from Lester Flatt/Earl Scruggs and Carter Family records.

I just discovered (about four days ago) Lync's "These Are Not Fall Colors." It's immensely enjoyable, though it may not be so enjoyable for those looking for really serious, mature music--it was a bunch of kids and sounds it, but the energy and sense of melody vs. noise is amazing.

I've also been really into Rainy Day Regatta's 12" after I saw them live. Very moving acoustic guitar-based stuff with really gorgeous vocal harmonies. The recorded stuff also has piano, horns, wine glasses, etc. Haven't heard the CD, but I imagine it's very good as well.

Ian Johnson, Monday, 23 September 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Today's impulse buys- "Tommy Boy's Greatest Beats" and "Searching For The Young Soul Rebels".

I have some damn fine impulses.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 23 September 2002 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

'wolves hollow' by marumari, best late night driving music ever. I tried his other records and they were not as good, i guess he is a one hit wonder then.

keith (keithmcl), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Bollywood. Everyone else discovered it about 2 weeks after me, but oh well, it means the records are cheaper!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm...my iPod. It led to a slew of rediscoveries. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Ted Leo's "Tyranny Of Distance" came out last year but basically ruled me all this year. also Willie Nelson "Red Headed Stranger" and Brendan Benson "One Mississippi".

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Sad to say...but Taco the Wonder Dog and MC Hawking is still the best new thing I've heard in 6 months.

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Notorious B.I.G. - "Gimme The Loot." Once again, ODB infects an amazing artist and makes him almost as fucked up as he is. one of my favorite singles i've heard this year.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Soledad Brothers: Everything damn thing they touch.
Jr. Walker and the All-Stars: Anthology (Motown)
Martha And The Vandellas: Anthology (Motown)
Clone Defects: Rouge River Rebel 7" (Italy)
V/A: Sympathetic Sounds Of Detroit (SFTRI)
Wire: Pink Flag (EMI)
Hearpen Records-era Pere Ubu

haha have you mistaken biggies 'other dude' voice for odb!!??

simon trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Heaven 17 "Penthouse and Pavement". Simplicity and weirdness. I like synths.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

finally got round to listening to 13th floor elevators' "Easter Everywhere". That's a great one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 08:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Associates - Sulk (plus extras). Purchased for the stupid price of £2.54 at Gatwick airport last month on the way to holiday in Italy. Proved to be the soundtrack of said holiday and pretty much every moment since. How did I live without such a beautiful, strange record before?

Rob M, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah! I got "Sulk" too. Everyone buy it! Should be cheap on Lp.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

sulk isn't bad. got the CD in the sale (a couple of great tracks amongst the extra material given). saw a performance from them on TOTP2 of 'country club'. that was good too.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 09:35 (twenty-three years ago)

The levels on stereos or mixers, the normalise function on any wave editor app, the browse files option on Slsk and the telephone. Yeah, and DFA's been pretty good so far.

nick.K (nick.K), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

weirdly, the west country pastoral folk sound of stackridge and their album "the man in the bowler hat" - it has moved me far more than a record written by a bunch of fools prone to hitting each other with rhubarb should do. there has not been a week since purchase when i have not played it. gorgeous record...

commonswings, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Playgroup's album from last year, really loving that since I picked it up for 7.99 a few weeks ago.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Information Society

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Vashti Bunyan's "I'd Like to Walk Around in Your Mind", which appears as a bonus track on the re-issue of her only album, from 1969.

J.K. & Co.'s Suddenly One Summer album of eerily 2002-sounding psych, also from 1969.

Curt (cgould), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

julio, how is Easter Everywhere, compared with Psychedelic Sounds (assuming you know the latter...)

willem (willem), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Frank Black s/t! I've always been a little indifferent towards the Pixies, so it was a big surprise to find how much I adored it.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

This Mohammed Abdel Wahab CD (Baidaphon, BGCD 603) is really quite nice. They say his voice deteriorated quite early in his career, so this must be from his prime.

DeRayMi, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

A. R. Kane, now i need to find thier non-compilation albums.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

And I'm another "Sulk" buyer, wasn't it just rereleased. I got it on CD. But the Associates aren't that new of a discovery for me, I just finally got that album, and I agree that everyone should get it.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Two I missed out on last year: Royksopp's Melody A.M. (thanks, Matos) and Couch's Profane (thanks, epitonic).

Steph (Steph), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

haha have you mistaken biggies 'other dude' voice for odb!!??

holy shit. im a moron. tell me it doesn't sound like ODB.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, so many. Associates (you _Sulk_-lovers NEED to get your hands on _Fourth Drawer Down_), House of Love, Ride, Two Lone Swordsmen, Bailter Space (and other great NZ rock), Dif Juz, Carl Craig, The Slits, early Verve, Rhythm and Sound, King Crimson, Primal Scream, Curve, early Simple Minds, X-Ray Spex, Keiji Heino, Josef K, (more I'm sure I'm forgetting). The journey continues...

Clarke B., Wednesday, 25 September 2002 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

barry adamson, and the lounge lizards.

simon trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Revelation of '02, past-tense division: I'm starting to believe that Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" is the greatest piece of music ever made.

''julio, how is Easter Everywhere, compared with Psychedelic Sounds (assuming you know the latter...)''

I don't know it yet but I'll get it and hopefully I'll remember to tell you. do you like easter everywhere willem?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

The production work of Tom Wilson's 60's Verve output is astonishing, and ever since i found a record he worked on by someone named Harumi, i've been hooked again. Also a solo record by Norma Tanega called "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog". I wish someone could tell me something about Harumi.

a.r.c., Wednesday, 25 September 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Barry Boom - The Living Boom
Janet Kay - Silly Games
Sandra Cross - This Is

otherwise, LOADS of 'Ardkore/Jungle 12's from Steve Gurley, Manix, Hyper-On Experience, etc

sorry, julio, being a non-native english speaker (?), i see that i screwed up the question...
i meant that i already own (and like) Psychedelic Sounds and would like to know whether Easter Everywhere is comparable/as good/better/different (how) to P.S.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't have psychedelic sounds but yeah, i'll get it soon enough and report if this thread is alive. if not then i might post something on the 13th floor elevators thread for you.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

thanx! that would be nice.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, how rude of me, i didn't answer the original question yet.

my fave discovery: Spoon - Kill the Moonlight. never heard of before this album. highly enjoyable/catchy.

honourable mention: Doug Martsch solo album. it's very very good. totally unexpected after the lame last BtS album.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
- The first Neu! album and Boards of Canada's "Music has the right to children". Somehow I got a little bit into electronics this year.
- Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly". There is some soul/funk around I do like.
- David Bowie's "Low" which is like the sister album to my long beloved "Before and After Science" of Eno.
- New Order's "Movement" which is probably my favourite of theirs. They never were so dark again.
- Gilian Welch's "Time (The revelator)". Roots music as I like it.
- Wilco's "Summerteeth". My favourite eclectic album of the year. The Beatles live!
- A Silver Mt Zion's "Born into Trouble". Only listened to this twice but I really like this lofi version of Godspeed. Sounds like progressive classical chamber music.

Tonus-Music-Records, Don Li's Swiss minimalist jazz label. Everything on it recommended for fans of groovier The Necks, Nik Bärtsch's Ronin, and the last Dawn of Midi album.

THis was probably answwereda long time ago, even if not in this thread. But they changed the rhythm section between the 2 lps. Easter Everywhere is a lot more fluid, has instruments voicing more like a small jazz combo to my ears anyway.
PE is more by the original band may be more organic but rhythm is more chunky and Roky's doing more screaming whereas he's a buit more subdued on EE. I think I prefer EE but it was the first one I really got into or at least got given.
PE is closer to You're Gonna Miss Me which appears on it, EE more like I Got Levitation or Slip Inside This HOuse.

the music of phthalocyanine (navy warship et al), as somebody cited them (passionately) here

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Sunday, 6 December 2015 20:06 (ten years ago)

I discovered so much music in 2015. Last.fm tells me that I listened to more music this year than in any year I've been tracking it, and that feels about right. However, played more than any other is Vladimir Horowitz's album of Domenico Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas. And I can't imagine ever getting tired of these.

I think I already talked about it over in the "last classic album you were knocked out by" thread, but my fave pre-2015 discovery of the year is definitely Nona Hendryx's Nona. Especially:
