Records you wouldn't buy at full price but might at half price

Partly inspired by what Ronan said about picking up the Playgroup CD for £7.99; partly inspired by me saying to Tom a while back that "Mali Music" would be worth buying for a fiver but you would never touch it at £14.

So, records which you sort of fancy but aren't sure about buying. If £15.99 in HMV or Tower (or, ahem, £15 in Fopp) you decide you can live without it. But if seen in Berwick Street's exclusive Mister CD boutique for a tenner, or better still, £7, you think "OK I'll give it a try." Are there any records which fit into this category?

There's this amazing 2CD reissue of Nordheim's "Electricity" and the Biosphere/Deathprod tribute CD "Nordheim Transformed" on Rune Grammophon. Beautiful packaging too. But, alas, 33 euro is a whole more than I'd be willing to spend on ANY CD. I can get four new CD's of eight second hand ones for that money...

Virtually everything! I hardly ever pay full price for anything as even new releases are often a tenner from Mr. CD, Selectadisk or Sister Ray. HMV seems to have a permanent sale these days and there were many recent albums cheap when I dropped in last night (Boards of Canada new one 7.99, DJ Shadow new one 9.99 etc). I wouldn't pay more than a tenner for any of the Trojan mini-boxes, in fact I've paid 6.99 for the last 3 I bought.

I did break my 'no full-price' rule last night to get the ESG album (12.99 from HMV) but if Selectadisk had been open I could've got it for 9.99.

Probably Beth Orton's new one...but then again I've got a burner on my PC so I really don't need to worry because the only thing I pick up at the mall nowadays are blank CDs.

Yes. Happens all the time. Just one recent example: I've been tempted to get the Stephen Stills Manassas LP for a while. At midprice and moreover as one half of a two-for €17.50 deal, I decided it was worth taking the plunge (it's very good btw).

Also: what the Dr. said, sorta. I am a bit of a tight get, so can't bear the thought of paying full whack for something if I know I've seen it for a lot less already. Like the Playgroup DJ Kicks LP, I've seen "as new" in s/hand shops for €12, so refuse to pay more, and am prepared to wait...

I avoid full price like the plague unless I'm buying from the bands themselves or from my fave indie record store.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

unless its improv/free jazz or 20th century classical I, like Ned, avoid paying full prices like the plague becuz I will eventually get it for half that in a second hand shop or bettah.

I've just come back from a quick trip to the shops. On the way I went to a small local rec shop. the guy deals with dance music but he is flogging loads of vinyl for 2 quid so I picked up scritti politti (cupid and psyche 85), the who (live at leeds) and a chris and cosey 12'' for 2 quid each. These are recs i would never ever buy at full price.

I agree with Dave C - if you live in London and have internet access, you never really need to pay more than a tenner for a record or CD. Any relatively mainstream new CD can be got for £9 inc P&P from CD-Wow, and one of the other shops mentioned are bound to do it pretty cheap. for anything over 5 years old and still in print, wait a few months and it'll turn up in the hmv sale or fopp! And I haven't even included second hand!

Robin Goad, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

most older music I will look for at cheaper prices.

I wouldn't buy old metallica, beach boys, kraftwerk, bon jovi, ramones etc CD's at full price, but that's partly coz I know that if I hunt around I can find it at a cheaper price. And because of the three local record shops, one is full of secondhand and new CDs at £6-9.

I shoplift everything that is full price at fnac. The only one who loses money that way is the shop itself, so I even pride myself in doing that, though my knees still get a bit shakey. You can buy a lot of interesting stuff in barcelona for under 6 euros. Well, not that much really.

imports!!!

JC (JC A.), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of them is my answer. I'll buy most CDs I have even a passing interest in if they're half price.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I have seen people shoplifting in the Fnac. They shove CDs down the front of their trousers, so it looks like they've got square bollocks.

I might get the Specials reisssues at half price.
