Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I have that inner sleeve, but it would hardly qualify as x-rated. maybe pg-13.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

damn i wish there was an x rated inner sleeve to 'dirrty'

simon trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

If by "stuffed animal...getting jiggy with some girl" you mean a naked woman sitting on a big stuffed animal (butt to the camera) while a man of questionable aesthetics smears some dark substance (either blood or poooooo poooooo, hard to tell in black and white) on another, smaller stuffed animal in the foreground, well...uh, yeah, that appears under the tray on my CD.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, there is something then...i didn't get that one...puritans must have been creating my cd at that damn factory.

Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it was intentionally done as a limited edition thing. Only the first n copies had the inner sleeve picture. Or so I heard.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

R.Kern photo limited to first 50k.

simon trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

trife you fucking loser, all your (c)rap cds have higher numbers on them, hahahaha.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

uh, barcode numbers aren't an indicator of anything besides the CD's UPC, so it can be scanned grocery-store-style. Duh.

hstencil, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

im so embarrassed!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

If I have 3 x rated grocery store style pictures, how much do are they worth? Lets say near mint condition.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought the LP as soon as it came out and recall no such inner sleeve photo. I'll be checking as soon as I get home, though.

When a friend of mine mentionned this to me like 10 years ago I laugh so hard I couldn't stop. I just had met the guy and we were talking about music, I said I liked SY then he said "oh yes they whipe their ass with a stuffed animal" I didn't knew about the picture so I thought he was making somesort of a metaphor to describe their sound! :-) (well the stuffed animal= pop, the shit=noize?) hahaha

The Hegemon, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The piece in question features Bob Flanagan but was conceptualized and photographed by Mike Kelley.

"In contemporary art anal-erotic defiance is often self-conscious, even self-parodic: not only does it test the anally repressive authority of traditional museum culture, but it also mocks the anally erotic narcissism of the vanguard rebel-artist..."

"This defiance can be pathetic, but, again, it can also be perverse, a twisting of the paternal law of difference - sexual and generational, ethnic and social ...performed through a mimetic regression to an anal world where given differences might be transformed..."

Hal Foster on Mike Kelley.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Hal should come to UCI.

and Sheree Rose, Bob's domiatrix and partner:

Kim's long-time friend Mike Kelley designed the artwork
for "Dirty", which depicts a series of somewhat innocent,
somewhat creepy stuffed animals. The cover features one
of these creatues, and the insert folds out to 6 pages,
each featuring a different animal (and a portrait of a young
Mike Kelley). The malicious grinning bear appears only on
the vinyl and CD longbox (and the cassette, I think), as
does the one-eyed monkey. The other side of the insert
has the album credits on one panel, and the remaining
five are blank (one wonders if these were intended for the
lyrics, which are again not included). The back features
individual band member portraits by Richard Kern. The
vinyl art has things switched around a bit -- the back
cover includes the animal pics & the track listing, the
sleeves have the (full-sized) band pics and the credits.
Both 12"s are on orange vinyl. The vinyl was released in
Australia on Waterfront, packaged in a cotton bag with a
large "Dirty" poster (this set was limited to 1000). There
were a few different CD versions -- the initial longbox
release; the Japanese CD w/ "Stalker" as the final track
(and likely unofficial lyrics); and the not-so-limited edition
"dirty picture" version with a tray liner photograph
depicting performance artists Bob Flanagan and Sherry
Rose, naked, defiling various stuffed animals. By the way,
random stuffed animals similar to those featured on the
cover were sold at "Pretty Fucking Dirty" tour shows,
each bearing a "Hug Me I'm Dirty" button.
