They seem to exert some strange fascination whereby as a result I can't convince myself they are crap whereas the recorded evidence seems to indicate they are. What does anyone else think?

I know what you mean although in a slightly different way. I didn't particularly like them (and never would have considered buying an LP) but for some reason dragged my youthful self to two of their concerts.
The clumpiness of the slowish beats with the swathes of mellotron etc. imprinted itself on my mind though, to this day.

Basically despite the fact that most fo their music seems to be trite, mawkish and unengagung I still have them down in the basket amrked "Fairly decent bands". So I keep giving them another chance where I'd have given up on another bad.

It could be the assumption that since they were on Harvest they must be interesting. I keep thinking that maybe I've only heard their bad albums.

"unengagung" = top german word for rubbish?

i endured a lot of the LPs while at school: david's desciption is exact and covers every note i ever heard

three weeks pass...
hey I never saw that reply when you posted it! obviously Lawson's fondness for XTC hasn't put me off *them*, but then I was way too far gone as a Partridge / Moulding fanboy. and I don't hate Lawson *personally* (never come across him, you see)

but a VERY GOOD friend of mine mentioned on Usenet the other day that he liked BJH, and that he sees rap as "crap, pure and simple", which let me down a bit. not enough that I'd want to break the friendship, though.
