It should have been a single

Have you ever thought that someone you liked chose the wrong song to release as a single off their album ? You know, the feeling that Song X might have been a great number one rather than the damp squib that did come out.

Maybe there is a story behind it, like a legal problem that prevented its release or something.

I thought of this after listening to "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" from 'Our Favourite Shop', which is easily the Style Council's finest moment and beats any of the four singles taken from OFS as a would-be classic hit. Which TSC, for all their UK top tenners in an age where they had one of the biggest first-week-sale fanbases, they never really had after "Best Thing".

"Wolf" (which I think was a single in Japan) had, I feel, the sound of 1985 down to a tee and remains a total classic.

so ..?

I always thought By Demons Be Driven would have made a better single than Walk. That riff is [one of] the best in metal.

I'm surprised Cinerama didn't release Hard Fast & Beautiful.

"Canary in a Coalmine" should'a been 'singled out' rather than "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da"

I was saying to Tim H last nite that one of the reasons the last Pulp lp sank was that they didn't release the BEST SONG as a single, ie '...Minnie Ripperton...'. I mean, ok, it is about a young girl who's abducted and murdered, but, erm...

I'll duck after I say this 'cause I know he gets little love around here, but I always thought Elliott Smith's "Independence Day" could've gotten him all over AAA radio. In a good way.

Pulp's 'The Night That Minnie Timperley Died'.. I thought that song was about that girl that died after she took ecstasy? No?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

cinerama shoulda done "quick before it melts".

mike (ro)bott, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Minnie Ripperton? Minnie Timperley, yes. (I have been drinking).

Outside the air was cool, an older guy sitting in his car asked if Minnie needed a ride.
He thought he was still dangerous - paunchy, but dangerous -
on the night that Minnie Timperley died.
It's such a beautiful world, you're such a beautiful girl.
And he only did what he did 'cos you looked like one of his kids.

I kinda thought that was referring to some kind of abduction and murder. It certainly hints at it. I can't see anything about ecstasy in there.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

fair enough. I didn't really pay much attention to the lyrics to be honest.

..... and "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby" of course.

I was always led to believe that it was denied a single release as Geoff Travis of Rough Trade saw it as a not-entirely-subtle dig at him by Lord Moz, and consequently nixed its certain hit-ness.

Even though I love "The 13th", it was an odd choice for a lead-off single. I would have used "Treasure" as the lead single and followed up with "Trap". (Of course, I would also have burned all copies of "Mint Car" and "Return" and put "Ocean" and "A Pink Dream" on the actual album.
