Blur or Gorrilaz?

damon might be a hottie but does that stupid "rap" fad work in such a wretched place like "england" which im sure this moron comes from. but that song from blur that was all like WOOHOO sure made me kill kids at school. roast me on a spit. SO who is the better band?

Arrow Core!, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hm...is this Geordie Racer's cousin or Neuromancer's brother? I can't decide yet.

Blur, clearly -- for Blur actually have songs I like. Gorillaz don't even have a note I like.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

ned,did you like that song that went WOOHOO too? cause that ruled

Arrow Core!, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Remember the Starship Troopers trailer? I loved the way they synchronized the WOOHOOs to the exploding aliens. I was disappointed that the actual movie did not contain the song.

Chris H., Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Song 2," for so it is called, is shit-on-shingle. Some may disagree.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

This is the best question ever. "A wretched place like 'england'" - that's godawesome.

So anyhow, definitely Blur. Gorillaz are evil post modern ironists. Blur are also meant to be ironic but at least you can sing along and be happy when you hear Country House or Boys and Girls. Gorillaz, on the other hand, make me want to H-bomb London.

Ally, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

As I say Damon could be among us...so, they are the two most important bands of the last decade. Gorillaz should have been a number one!

james e l, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I thought there was no more stupid division than Blur v. Oasis. I was wrong.

The Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh damnit, that's another important thread I could've started instead of my media one. Taking Sides: Blur or Oasis? Shit. I'm going on the side of Oasis because they smash things.

I hope Damon is among us so he can read all the awful things I say about him. Damon. Pff.

Ally, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

if only we could combine them both into some sort of 'blurillaz'

ethan, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That would actually be a much better band name than either Blur or Gorillaz.

flowersdie, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

people, accept it. Blur has a really hard time not sounding gay and maybe its just my mainstream brainwashing but with the exception of "song 2" and "cofee and tv" they sound like the fucking Bee-gees on heroin. I have three mp3s from the gorrilaz and one simply cannot define them as a band but as an experiment, hence my conclusion is that this is just damon putting out all of his not gay works. and regarding the anti rap statements, i accept that the rap scene sucks and has sucked for ever and that one can hardly find anything barely hearable, but am i alone in thinking that the genre is artistically promising? without hoes, dough, asses, cars and bank robberies that is.

DUDE, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You must have access to both interesting Bee Gees records and interesting heroin then. Or you're insane.

Tiger, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't really follow either, I listen to what's good, politics aside. From an earlier comment: Oasis sucks, has sucked, and always will suck. From a more recent comment: Rap is definitely not all bad. Go listen to some Rahzel, or maybe a little Jurassic 5 if you need some persuasion.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The question that you have asked must have been asked in ignorance! If you have ever seen an interview with Blur you would know that they hate being compared with other bands. The reason Blur made it was because they were original, not because they sound like another band. The same goes for the Gorrilaz also, they are making it because they are original. Do you really think Damon would have made another band just to compete with Limp(shit-rock)Bizkit. Blur made extrordinary music that is all it's own. The Gorrilaz have done a great job doing that themselves. So, to compare two bands that came together for the soul-purpose of being different, you are all idiots. Oh, and by the way if any of you own the Gorrilaz album, you would know there are only two songs with "rap."

Brad Campanella, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hey! good point! I never thought of that, but it makes sense. That the gorrilaz are a way to compete with Bizkit in the whole hip-hop/rock crossover dept. That durn trend-hopping Albern, always chasing after innovators like Korn.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

1) i invented Blurillaz and i can take them away from you if i want.

2) i heard half of the gorillaz album in the record store and it sounded really nice. the del track was murkily like pete rock, if i recall. another was dreamy drone-rock that all you hip folk seem to go mad for normally. possibly interesting side qn., while i understand the brits being tired of damon, him being the publically-accepted bearer of all that is Cool about Music or something, what's with you americans being all uptight? i mean, they're like madness or something. we're not exactly saturated with blur over here. the whole d(a)emonization of them sounds like anglophilia to me. and let it be said that if madness did an album with del and automator i would die.

The story of Gorillaz is a characteristally messy one.Saturday Boy Stu-Pot,keyboard obsessive and nice kid dullard, is the star employee at Uncle Norm's Organ Emporium, on course to make regional manager. But then comes a Saturday to end all weeks (just like a Sunday, but with shopping). Murdoc, with his nasty bad boy crew, ramraids the shop in a tatty Vauxhall Astra. His plan: to seize the synths and form a chart topping band with the booty. He drives...SMASH!... through the shop window and... SMASH!... into Stu-Pot's head, fracturing his eyeball. Result: 30,000 hours of community service for Murdoc, plus 10 hours every week of caring for the vegetabilised Stu-Pot Soon, Murdoc's rotten driving skills again force life to take a different turn. While attempting a 360 doughnut spin in Nottingham's Tesco carpark, he catapults Stu-Pot through the windscreen and into a kerb. Stu-Pot's other eye is fractured, his mind is revived and he stands a young, black eyed god, with hedgehog hair and a vacant stare. Not only that, but his synth playing takes a serious turn for the weird.Perfect pop material. Stu- Pot is renamed 2D (because he's got two dents in his head). Now Murdoc needs a drummer. Rewind a few years. In New York State, Russel, a middle-class kid, is forced out of his posh private school due to his being possessed by a demon. He lies in a coma for four years, until an elaborate exorcism sets him free. Russel joins Brooklyn High, where he falls in with a group of talented street musicians, rappers and DJs. Hip-Hop saves his soul. For a time. A random drive-by shooting kills all of his friends and as Russel, the lone survivor, lies in a state of shock, the spirits of his chums invade his body, turning Russel's eyes a spooky white and giving him amazing drumming, rapping and general hip-hop skills. His parents move him to England, where they hope he'll have the chance of a quieter life. They hadn't reckoned on Murdoc, who tracks Russel down in a Soho Rap Record Store. Now, all the fledgling group need is a guitarist. They place an ad in the NME. The day the ad is published, a Fed-Ex'd freight container is delivered to their door. Out jumps a small Japanese person, carrying a Les Paul. She jabbers at them incomprehensibly, before launching into a riff to end all riffs, rounding it off with a hi- karate jump. The boys are speechless. Noodle has one word for them. It is Noodle. Gorillaz are born, and signed amidst the mayhem of their very first gig. Such is the way legends are created.

Re: "Clint Eastwood" - I don't think Damon sounds bored enough. He needs to watch a few more Merchant-Ivory flicks to achieve a heightened state of complete ennui. And he's almost SINGING - oh, dear.

17 tracks + "super-group" + rack (rap/rock) merger + "ooo, look - we're CLEVER" gimmick = scarily alluring. If only Dan the Automator weren't involved - I'd feel much better about dismissing it.

Well I think that both bands are excellent, just in different ways. Gorillaz has a sound that is really creative and different which I find pleasing to the ear. Blur has amazing lyrics and has this really cool sound which I even begin to describe. Even though the groups are clearly very different they both contribute much to the musical world. I would highly recomend both groups to anyone who would want something to listen to in the car , dance to, or just sit and listen to.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 3 January 2005 09:18 (nineteen years ago) link

There was a point when I cared about these bands. That point, i'm afraid, has passed us. That said, I'd sooner throw my Gorillaz discs on the fire than my Blur one, if only because I spent some much goddamn, inexplicable time hunting down those Blur CD singles.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 14:28 (nineteen years ago) link

my Blur ONES, I should say. I still play their stuff on occaission. Can't remember the last time I played the Gorillaz discs.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Alex I find it hard to imagine you as a fan of either of these bands for some reason.

I think Blur will sadly be remembered for their more horrible moments (Song 2, Girls & Boys, Parklife) than their better (This Is A Low, Coffee & TV, Chemical World, On Your Own, Best Days etc). God I want to hear some stuff of theirs RIGHT NOW!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 3 January 2005 14:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Alex I find it hard to imagine you as a fan of either of these bands for some reason.

That's because you fail to heed Flavor Flav's advice, and you BELIEVE THE HYPE!

I was a huge Blur fan for a while, hunting down their most elusive tracks by hook or by crook (this was pre-internet). However, unlike their more ardent supporters, I tend to prefer their earlier stuff (the rot set in circa Parklife). I'd sooner play Leisure than any of their last three albums.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 14:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Well see Leisure was a fine album but to me it was only mildly better than any of the other Baggy/Indie Rock/Shoegaze stuff that was coming out at the time. It's good but it's not exactly original whereas by "Modern Life" they'd become themselves (songs about cups of tea and eccentric Englishmen and hating America; experimenting with different musical styles etc). I think Parklife will always be my favourite as it was my first "proper" rock album, first CD and my first foray into ahem-alternative music.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 3 January 2005 15:33 (nineteen years ago) link

the new gorillaz album was completed in Dec, produced by Dangermouse, it'll be out next year.

chaki in charge (chaki), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

The choice is obvious: Blur. Although they have ceased to be relevant for me for about 3 years. Probably wouldn't be so bad if they packed it in about now, but then I hear rumours Graham might come back, so perhaps I should be fair and not pass judgement just yet. Not that I necessarily believe he could single-handedly pull them out of a rut, but I'm not sure.

Alex OTM re: singles

Some of the best b-sides ever were by Blur, IMHO. "I'm Fine", "Mace", "Day Upon Day", "Mr. Briggs"...

The three good things Damon Albarn ever managed to do:

1) played keyboard on some Elastica tunes (Norman Balda and Dan Abnormal)

2) lost his hair (in 1992 he was sporting pudding-bowl haircut)

3)wrote some decent tunes (from Parklife, and Blur)

pft, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:10 (sixteen years ago) link

dan abnormal was a (very good) blur song, off the (very good) great escape. his hair is practically irrelevant. by 'decent tunes' you clearly mean 'six very very good albums and one good one'.

my own bias aside, though, the amount of BS on this thread, mostly from americans who'd only heard about 3 blur songs (including song 2, which although a brilliantly successful pop song isn't very representative musically of what blur were capable), is astonishing.
