Although, like many, I had plenty of initial trouble getting into the extreme styles of vocals in black metal and death metal, I'm finding myself enjoying them more and more, and trying to figure out why I like certain voices and dislike others (hey, just like with any other genre). Who are your top five black and death metal vocalists? Mine (at the moment):
•Chuck Schuldiner, Death•Quorthon, Bathory•Jon Nodtveidt, Dissection•Nocturno Culto, Darkthrone•David Vincent, Morbid Angel

J. Read and Pete Helmkamp go pretty damn hard - can't really fuck wit their combined discographies (Conqueror, Oder From Chaos, Revenge, Angelcorpse, Axis of Advance, Black Witchery...).And Quorthon is the once and future king.

Oh no, how could I forget Tom G. Warrior?! I feel bad... Siegbran, are Pest's vocals on those Gorgoroth records processed or are they really un-fucked-with??
― Clarke B., Wednesday, 14 November 2012 22:21 (eleven years ago) link
Gotta mention Will Rahmer of Mortician. Half the time he doesn't even sound like a human voice - sounds like bass amp distortion.

the guy that sounds like a frog, inquisition
I might be in the minority on this, but I like what Xasthur/Malefic does (Did? He's been quiet..). Heavy processed, and buried in the mix. Not the best by far, though.
Nocturno Culto is up there, probably Ihsahn as well.

Some unmentioned ones:
Micke Jansson (Unanimated)Thomas AG Jensen (Saturnus)Glen Benton (Deicide)Karl Willets (Bolt Thrower)Jan Chris de Koeijer (Gorefest)Barney Greenway (Napalm Death)Bill Steer (Carcass)
Also, goregrind processed vocals are great when they sound like a clogged drain (find Urine Festival on youtube).

Also a sucker for maybe not great vocalists who use the right amount of echo or short delay to give a cryptic reverberation - Von, Mortuary Drape, Vomitor, etc. And honorable mention to black-ish metal vocalists like Cronos and Big Boss from Root.

The singing on the new Carcass album is A+++++. Also often impressed by vocals on Gorgoroth tracks, but I understand they changed singers a lot so not sure who it would be.

Attilla's fucking awesome too. I love his Sunn O))) work (makes me think of Gary Oldman's Dracula).

It's all about the intro vocals –
Lord Worm's high-pitched girly first scream on "Crown of Horns" (on None so Vile)Noctorno Culto's belching start to "Kathaarian Life Code" (on A Blaze in the Northern Sky)Nick Bullen's thick brummie "Genocoide. To the. Starving. Noiyshuns" at the beginning of Napalm Death, Scum
Sure there are many more amazing ones... always love the eternal question of what to do in the three seconds before you descend into an impenetrable wall of atonal malice

Was going to say Lee Dorrian in Napalm Death but then my inner pedant was like that's not black OR death.
The singing on the new Carcass album is A+++++.
Walker sounds fucking amazing, really surprised at how well his voice has held up. I still miss Steer singing though.

Frank Mullen's good on record, but he was phenomenal (and hilarious) live. Jazz hands! I remember seeing Suffocation at what I believe was his final NYC-area show — he pointed out his daughter (early 20s) hanging out at the side of the stage, and then dedicated "Breeding the Spawn" to her.

I got to see him only once (it was always Ricky or someone else the other times), but I did put on their live cd once and was floored at how great he sounded on it.
