One of the harshest of the Japanese noise guys. What's your opinion on his work? And what do you think is his best stuff?

Chriddof (Chriddof), Saturday, 28 September 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

ho ho the leg dugarkin/kodanski/madonna fan to thread!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 28 September 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

important but unlistenable.

When I saw him live he put on a suit made out of contact Mics and kept charging into a wall. I would say he suffers for his art..

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 28 September 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

where did you saw him brg30?

The Hegemon, Saturday, 28 September 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
Revive. I've been real into Japanoise lately and the revival of the other thread made me wonder if we had one of there floating around.

All I have of his thus far are the tracks included on the "Extreme Music From Japan" comp, but I've found them rather unimpressive and dated/simple sounding compared to some other Japanoise artists.

So what are his most essential recordings, if any?

Search: Super Compact Disc Numero 5, Psychotronics Erectile 10"

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Psychotronics Erectile 10" seconded, awesome stuff!!!

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

it's just about the right amount of M.A.S.O.N.N.A
listend to it through a guitar amp on mushrooms two weekends ago while playing "Mugshot". fun tymes.

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

haha awesome. I googled that release but didn't come up with much. Is it still in circulation or is this gonna be a rarity/mp3 deal?

- (smile), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I downloaded mine, I have no idea if it's an actual 10" or not, but something bearing that title is definitely out there on p2p.

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Actually you know what, it's Psychetronics Erectile, try that.

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Passed up on his Glasgow show a year or so back when I found out his performance would be no more than 15 minutes because of its 'extreme physical intensity'. Friends had already paid. Their verdict: 'Well, he's no Iggy Pop . .'

Soukesian, Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

he does kinda walk on walls, though!

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Tried the other spelling, still not much. Seems like a long out of print Japan only thing. I'll try to P2P it.

i've v. v. recently been reading abt this American Prurient guy who is playing in London next month - from a written description i imagined something similar to a Masonna performance, funnily enough, am i wrong/right?

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

frequency lsd is the best masonna, i think. pschetronics is also good, as has been mentioned. stay away from spectrum ripper or the ones with maddonna in the title.

i've not seen prurient live, doesn't really sound anything like masonna on disc. though his performance was described to me as 'a shirtless brute punching at a wall of amps' promising, i guess.

deru, Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

prurient sux live. masonna pwns him.

some prurient recordings have their moments, though. (rare as they may be)

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

DESTRUCTIVE fucking MICROPHONE.

(seconded PSYCHETRONICS ERECTILE, which might be the very best masonna release, and NUMERO 5.)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't know Ian. I dig on History Of Aids a lot. Throbbing persian netherworld shit. Shipwrecker's Diary is a bit too harsh/spastic for my taste.

The only live show I've seen of his was a collab with Thurston Moore and just watching Dom flail around and just get these absurd, cutting high pitched tones out of his stack was pretty inspiring.

who does Shinson na Clitoris, is that Masonna? That's really good, whoever it is.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 1 July 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

nineteen years pass...

bump ;)

also wanna give a shoutout to the total classic Masonna Vs. Bananarama LP, recently reissued via the Urashima label along with lots of other early/rare stuff by him

sleeve, Thursday, 6 February 2025 17:28 (one year ago)

I got excited for a second, but then I realised that you meant to type Bananamara, not Bananarama.

you gotta roll with the pączki to get to what's real (snoball), Thursday, 6 February 2025 18:58 (one year ago)

lol whoops, I guess I have been misreading that for decades!

sleeve, Thursday, 6 February 2025 19:04 (one year ago)

Likewise!

like watching brian eno dancing (Matt #2), Thursday, 6 February 2025 19:06 (one year ago)

oh also, fuck that Prurient guy, not remotely similar and far inferior to Maso's work

sleeve, Friday, 7 February 2025 00:34 (one year ago)

I second Stormy's 20-year-old recommendations of Destructive Microphone and the 10", have them both and love them but I really prefer the short tracks on Bananamara (feels weird to type that) especially in a larger shuffle playlist

sleeve, Friday, 7 February 2025 00:35 (one year ago)

"Live to Tell" still my number one.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 February 2025 00:41 (one year ago)

huh I don't know that one ;)

sleeve, Friday, 7 February 2025 00:43 (one year ago)
