Any recommendations on the best way to record mixes onto a computer? I've always wanted to put together a mix CD and I need to know what software/setup I need. Thanks!

it'd help to know what you have now. pls describe your existing equipment. also, include computer specs w/ soundcard info..

like, things that blend into each other? Like a beatmatched dance set?

Are you just wanting to crossfade tracks? CoolEdit, Soundforge, and Goldwave are all perfectly fine editing tools that will let you create one cd-length file which you can insert markers into to separate the individual tracks.

if you are talking about recording a live mix of your turntables, you don't need anything fancy at all. i record stuff into the computer in the wave editor that came with nero cd burning software (you can add all the indexes and track markers in nero also). the main liability with doing this has been the crappy unbalanced input on my motherboard - sometimes it has a bit of a buzz to it. at some point i will get a better soundcard. i am eyeing an aardvark, but pretty much anything you get will come with some recording software

This probably isn't helpful for this specific thread, but it's tangentially related.

If like me you're a Broke Mother Fucker without decks and mixer and you still want practice putting together sets, there's a great program called MixMeister available for download. It's great good fun. I think I got it from Sharewaremusicmachine, but that's really just a catch-all guess.

i just use Acid Pro for my pre-mixed sets which you may consider as amateurish but you really dont need anything else for mixing unless you want to incorporate kill switch techniques, sophisticated effects or whatever (if i did i'd do this in Soundforge or similar first)...its a great way of mixing mp3s, wavs etc. on your computer...of course this is not like recording a live mix on your decks but this way you can get things matched perfectly with more ease etc. - takes the skill out of it a bit perhaps but still tons a fun and you can mix as many things as you want simultaneously which is the main advantage over using just two decks

three years pass...
Ok so I take a 192kbps mp3, put it in Cooledit Pro and play about with it. I get it sounding how I want then I save it back again at 192kbps. Am I going to lose sound quality? Would I be better off saving it as a 320kbps mp3 or will it be fine at 192kbps again?

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Whenever you encode a file with a lossy algorithm there's going to be a quality drop. If you use the same encoder and the same settings there'll be a bit less of a drop, but it'll still happen. Ideally you should source it as a .wav file or something else lossless then only encode when you're done.

That said, using 320kbps, editing, then encoding at 192kbps should lose less audio data than starting at 192.

Hmm. Is it a substantial drop? In some cases I'm going to using 128kbps mp3s as my starting point (unavoidable) but is this a big no no? Saving at 320kbps should hardly lose any quality, right?
