inspired both by the C90 about the Caspian Sea and by the new Christmas Baubles And Their Strange Sounds album.

I was thinking something that conjures the mood of whatever your perception of the aurora borealis is. but NO COCTEAU TWINS.

Secret Chiefs 3 - Celestial Ship of the Corsairs

Of course there's the thematically correct Super Furry Animals - Northern Lites, though that falls absolutely flat in repect to the mood.

From the 25 Years of Rough Trade compilation: Gescom - Sciew Spoc. It even has a little bit of the wobbly Nova (tv show on PBS) sound.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 29 September 2002 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 29 September 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I might get skinned for this, but Varnaline has a tune called "Northern Lights."

"never seen magic as crazy as this"

chris (chris), Monday, 30 September 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

i've only ever seen an aurora once, and it was in tasmania, which would make it aurora australis, i believe. anyway, at the time i was at some insane outoor rave, and someone put on that stee-yoopid dancy remixxy thing of 'bohemian rhapsody'. so, that's the one that comes to mind for me. but... i guess you just had to be there. please ignore this posting. sorry to spoil your mood, chris. that nick drake track is sublime.

who the fuck did that remix, anyway?

mistersquiggle, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

bjork's verspertine - the last track if you're feeling picky - almost as obvious as the cocteaus, I know, but hey, sometimes 'obvious' means 'right'.

jon (jon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 07:03 (twenty-three years ago)

the last track on which version of the album? unison?

Wyndham Earl, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

well, if we are allowed cocteaus after all, then the whole of the victorialand LP,

but i do tend to think of cocteaus in that piano magic bratislava taxidermy 1906 way rather than an aurora borealis way

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Wyndham - there's more than one version of that album? I'd love to know more about this.

I mean the 'standard' studio version with the white cover and the doodled swan.

jon (jon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a Cocteaus song that includes the lyric 'Aurora Borealis' - I can't be sure, but I think it's 'Pale Clouded White' off 'Echoes in a Shallow Bay'.

Alfie (Alfie), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't imagine why you've forgotten the magic of Renaissance's "Northern Lights"

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

wondering how long it would take for someone to mention that :).

also including the phrase "aurora borealis": Momus's "Suicide Pact", from his best album.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

it was really songs which evoked people's varying impressions (imagined impressions?) of the aurora borealis rather than songs that simply reference it.

i'd just prefer it if they weren't hippy ass ones..

Wyndham Earl, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

For a non-hippy approach, I suggest some Lift to Experience. Several tracks on their album would cut the noisy-but-spiritual mustard.

jon (jon), Thursday, 3 October 2002 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, how about Eno's 'An Ending (Ascent)'? Or 'Drift'?
Probably a bit hippy ass...

I'd love to see the Northern Lights. If anyone decides to organise an Aurora Borealis FAP, then please let me know.
