"You turn it on and it sounds like me," Vile recently told SPIN's David Bevan, describing the new record. "But the guitar playing is better and the ideas are new."

mizzell, Monday, 11 February 2013 15:53 (thirteen years ago)

opening/ almost title track is drifty/dreamy with some extended guitar. doesn't sound too different from smoke rings. looking forward to this album.

mizzell, Monday, 11 February 2013 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

sounds like a slow version of In My Time, and the electric guitar, and somewhat like War On Drugs

nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 16:42 (thirteen years ago)

Smoke Ring didnt have that breezy electric guitar.
great tune.

nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

awesome guitar solo at the end

nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

Between this, Mac DeMarco, Real Estate, and Cass McCombs, I think I've found my favorite "current" sound.

Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

highly anticipating this

dmr, Monday, 11 February 2013 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

Mac DeMarco sounds a little like Vile early stuff

nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 18:02 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah all of those I've listed to me are very close in sound in one way or another. I'm seeking more of that sound as well.

Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

ariel pink?

nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

I guess so, I wasn't sold with Haunted Graffiti but liked a track or two I heard here and there from the last record.

Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

My impression is that Ariel Pink isn't as measured as the others, that's part of what I like about all of them.

Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

cleaners from venus is good if you haven't heard 'em, early 80s brit diy stuff along these lines.

Spectrum, Monday, 11 February 2013 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

Have you heard Woods?

Trip Maker, Monday, 11 February 2013 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

have you heard Pavement?

nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

Have you heard The Fall?

Z S, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:15 (thirteen years ago)

Have you heard Mozart?

administrator galina (Matt P), Monday, 11 February 2013 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?

administrator galina (Matt P), Monday, 11 February 2013 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

Larry Mozart yes, not W.A. Mozart though

Z S, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

Have you heard music?

nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks! Love Cleaners From Venus, kind of like Woods (they're from my home town area apparently- kind of a fun fact), love Pavement though they generally exude more hip angst than the cited bands in my opinion, love the Fall.

Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

Mozart is too angst-y as well...

haven't listened to music in forever, should revisit.

Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

Clientele is like the UK version of all this imo, too.

Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

The potentially double album was written on the road, reunites the band with longtime Dinosaur Jr. producer and Smoke Ring tracker John Agnello, and features guests like Farmer Dave Scher of Beachwood Sparks, Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux, and Woods frontman Jeremy Earl. In a interview with Spin, Vile called the album “our [Fleetwood Mac's] Tusk, but no cheese. Just rock.”

nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

Between this, Mac DeMarco, Real Estate, and Cass McCombs, I think I've found my favorite "current" sound.

yeah, i think the DeMarco album is the best of the lot

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Monday, 11 February 2013 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

i just listened to the mac demarco album (2), and it has it's moments, but i'm not sure i'm going to be able to overcome my hatred of a few guitar strumming styles that he relies on too often. i have no idea how to explain in words what i mean, but i'm talking about the strumming style used at the very beginning of "Cooking up Something good", and also the strum where you mute the 2's and 4's, like at the beginning of ""Still Together". i have too many painful memories of being stuck in a room with a guy who played nothing but that style while staring intensely at me and repeatedly asking for feedback. i'll keep listening, though!

Z S, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

i shudder to say it, but i realized what it is: it's the dave matthews band guitar strum. i have trouble getting past it.

Z S, Monday, 11 February 2013 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah that is truly a very jam-band guitar style, though I think it is offset by the style of everything else around it in this case.

Evan, Monday, 11 February 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

really don't get this guy (kurt v)

flopson, Monday, 11 February 2013 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

he doesn't get you either

nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

i've heard his solo live show is better but i saw him with the violators and it just dragged like nothing i've ever seen

flopson, Monday, 11 February 2013 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

never saw him live, but from what ive seen on youtube - it seems a bore

nostormo, Monday, 11 February 2013 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

i saw him live a couple of times a few years ago and hated him every time, but the records are great, especially the last one.

mizzell, Monday, 11 February 2013 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

Live was alright, but I didn't really get into him fully until afterwards.

Evan, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

this rules very hard

nostormo, Thursday, 21 March 2013 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

song is nice, i guess.not as good as the first one.

i like how he quietly plays air guitar with his fingers on that clip.

nostormo, Thursday, 21 March 2013 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

What's the first one, again? This is the first thing I've heard from the new release.

nostormo, Thursday, 21 March 2013 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

it seems the new record is going to sound like Smoke Ring, but with a more "professional" production (by John Agnello)

fine by me!

whole album stream!
sounds AWESOME!

nostormo, Monday, 1 April 2013 12:25 (thirteen years ago)

the production is rich and full of small details, as oppose to smoke ring which was more stripped down.
maybe he was jealous of War On Drugs?

anyway, sounds like the sort of an album it's hard not to love.
Vile for the Masses, in a good way.

nostormo, Monday, 1 April 2013 12:43 (thirteen years ago)

streaming on npr too, this sounds gorgeous

ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 April 2013 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

Is it wrong of me to suggest that this record sounds a LOT like Frank Black and the Catholics as a jam band? (I personally don't think that's a bad thing, by the way.)

@GracieLoPan #fyi (Display Name (this cannot be changed):), Monday, 1 April 2013 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I was definitely hoping it was some kind of secret "Hot Buttered Vile" version or something.

slagterm, Thursday, 11 April 2013 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

were my ears deceiving me or was one tune a heavy "boys of summer" homage?

never thought of it that way but i totally get what you mean. i really like that one.

teddy dominatrix (dyl), Thursday, 11 April 2013 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

Shame chamber is great but I always expect J Mascis to start singing when it comes on

Heez, Saturday, 13 April 2013 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

great album - after 'Halo', I thought this was the kind of artist from whom one album was enough but I've been proved wrong. Great sunny highway driving music too. Surprised no one has mentionned 'Stoned & Dethroned' as a reference.

"Wakin on a Pretty Day" sound a lot like "Major Leagues"

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Saturday, 27 April 2013 09:54 (thirteen years ago)

I'd never previously listened to Kurt Vile, but Wakin' on a Pretty Daze is my favorite album of 2013 so far.

jaymc, Monday, 29 April 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

better than mbv? no way. compared to that it's a little bit of a bore i'd say.

Same here, loving this album, went out and bought the vinyl after two listens.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

Got this on vinyl the other day. Absolute perfection. Less of a...'vibe' to it than Smoke Ring had/has, but the songs are incredible. I could listen to Goldtone all day.
