US #1s of 2012

Symmetry required me to start this thread. For consistency's sake (I've never allowed songs that reached #1 in the previous year) I'm tossing "We Found Love". Deal with it.

My ranking:

Carly Rae Jepsen, "Call Me Maybe"
Gotye f/ Kimbra, "Somebody That I Used to Know"
Adele, "Set Fire to the Rain"
LMFAO, "Sexy and I Know It"
Katy Perry, "Part of Me"
Bruno Mars, "Locked Out of Heaven"
Maroon 5, "One More Time"
Taylor Swift, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"
Rihanna, "Diamonds"
Fun f/ Janelle Monae, "We Are Young"
Kelly Clarkson, "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)"
Flo Rida, "Whistle"

That got really iffy really fast.

Rolling "2 chainz" draadje (The Reverend), Monday, 31 December 2012 08:54 (thirteen years ago)

love stronger and we are never ever getting back together, but i can't even imagine not voting for carly rae

kaygee, Monday, 31 December 2012 08:57 (thirteen years ago)

"Stronger" is like a machine-tooled with every possible interesting edge sanded off until nothing remains but an inane husk. I swear someone set out to write the most generic Kelly Clarkson song possible.

Rolling "2 chainz" draadje (The Reverend), Monday, 31 December 2012 09:00 (thirteen years ago)

whenever i've been forced to listen to the radio this year "stronger" has usually provided the sole relief during a grim endurance test. it's not super-great or anything but pretty enjoyable in a low-investment kind of way.

might toss a vote to T-Swift here, WANEGBT really grew on me in the context of the album (ie, it's pretty much a one-off, and comes off almost like TS playing up to her stereotype for kicks. plus, the indie record line remains the best thing.

lex pretend, Monday, 31 December 2012 09:16 (thirteen years ago)

i wonder if i should find out how gotye is actually pronounced one of these days. i've been saying "goaty". that song really is super dull though.

cross at Taylor Swift for making me have a little public weepy fit when the song came on in a shop the other week, still voting for it.

love LMFAO, Kelly Clarkson, Flo Rida, like Carly Rae and Bruno, not really bothered about the rest

soma dude (Noodle Vague), Monday, 31 December 2012 10:30 (thirteen years ago)

Gotye > Bruno > Carly > Kelly > Adele > M5 > Katy > LMFAO > Flo > Taylor > Rihanna > Fun

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 12:39 (thirteen years ago)

Gotye, easily. It was my favorite song of 2011.

Frederik B, Monday, 31 December 2012 12:46 (thirteen years ago)

"Call Me Maybe" before we drop a ways to "Locked Out of Heaven"

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 31 December 2012 12:54 (thirteen years ago)

Gotye song is dece VH1 groove-pop, but Carly Rae broughg the metaphysics

x-gau, uncut gau, The Bomb! (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 31 December 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)

it's so refreshing to see a list of 12 songs by 12 artists (and only one producer shared by two tracks -- Max Martin with both Katy and Taylor). 2012 was the first year no artist had more than one #1 since 1992.

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

"We Are Never" grew on me more than "Call Me Maybe," which never crossed over to more than a pleasant distraction for me.

Also, between Gotye and Bruno it was quite a year for Sting-singing.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 31 December 2012 13:38 (thirteen years ago)

On "Stronger" there's that part before the chorus where I think she's going to go into "Man in Motion," and it's disappointing when she doesn't.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 31 December 2012 13:42 (thirteen years ago)

I just love the restrain and the arrangement of Somebody That I Used to Know. There is a bassoon in the chorus, which just plays the same note over and over, and the disapears.

Frederik B, Monday, 31 December 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

max martin also produced 'one more night', as well as the katy & taylor singles (not 'one more time' btw!)

anyway, 'call me maybe' > 'we are never' > the rubbish

half the songs are total ass every year though, was really talking less about quality and more about the respite from multiple Rihanna/Katy/etc. chart toppers every year

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

"Diamonds" is the ultimate rose-tinted glasses song for me; I don't enjoy the act of actually listening to it but my memories of it are always pleasant. No, I don't really get it either.

GIMME SOME REGGAE (DJP), Monday, 31 December 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

the Kanye remix of "Diamonds" was enjoyable enough to remind me that Stargate are basically so consistent that even when they make a bad song, it's usually down to the vocalist

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

Can you believe Flo Rida has been living in the top ten for five years?

da croupier, Monday, 31 December 2012 14:52 (thirteen years ago)

dude has had 11 top 20 singles

da croupier, Monday, 31 December 2012 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

considering that he sort of predicted the shift in pop's sound, yes

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

yeah top Hot 100 artists of the year is

1. Rihanna
2. Flo Rida
3. Nicki Minaj

pretty crazy tbh

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)

for the longest time it seemed like the world would only let Flo Rida have a big hit every year or two, but right now he's on 4 back-to-back

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)

i was a big flo rida defender in the early years but his hits have increasingly become about What He's Saying rather than what someone else is singing on the hook

da croupier, Monday, 31 December 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

i actually considered it a major talent of his to say so many words in a verse without any of them sticking

da croupier, Monday, 31 December 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno, all i can remember of "Whistle" is the hook really

soma dude (Noodle Vague), Monday, 31 December 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

oh yeah they're still negligible in hindsight, they just used to even feel like tissue paper when the song was on

da croupier, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

i think that's his point, nobody cares about the verses. and until "Whistle," Flo Rida never delivered the hook on any of his own hits. (xp)

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

i still like "good feeling" better than "levels" and i think "whistle" is kinda dope... pretty decent year by his standards i think

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

i liked "wild ones"

da croupier, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

flo rida featuring... = yay
flo rida = nay

da croupier, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

i wager i legitimately fuck with 6 flo rida songs... that's about what i expected

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

he has some decent rap stuff too ("birthday cake" & that joint w/ briscoe & wayne) but i'm not counting those

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 15:03 (thirteen years ago)

i'll take your word for it

da croupier, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:03 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the first Flo Rida album when he was just riding the T-Pain wave and not the Dr. Luke wave it was a pretty solid strip club rap album

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:04 (thirteen years ago)

also the first time i heard him on the first DJ Khaled album i was like ah damn that's a good doubletime flow, gotta check for this dude

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:04 (thirteen years ago)

it's kinda hilarious and intensely un-self aware that he actually named an album "only one flo"

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

"low" is prob my least fav song that t-pain has ever been on but the other two singles off that are pretty solid

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

even funnier, it was Only One Flo (Part 1), and Part 2 was never released

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:06 (thirteen years ago)

lmao

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

Flo Rida has nine top 10 hits, Rick Ross has one (and it's just a feature)

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

i mean even allowing for his being ahead of the curve when it came to jersey shore rap, his longevity compared to his irrelevance on his best songs is pretty impressive. i can't even begrudge that he's taking center stage now, it's not like he hasn't earned the right commercially

da croupier, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

though he's yet to even go gold for a full-length while having 7 multi-platinum singles is something

da croupier, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

considering how much artists get fucked on digital revenue, i'd be really curious to find out the diff in career income b/w the two of them (not accounting for touring, endorsements etc). would be an interesting test case for the modern industry imo.

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

yeah his tenacity and shamelessness are kind of perversely admirable. one of my chart nerd aspirations is to someday figure out who has the highest ratio of singles chart success to comparatively low album sales, because it almost has to be him. xp

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

i'm embarrassed that this list doesn't have "gangnam style"

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

i kind of respect Maroon 5's troll game that they were able to hold that off #1 with one of their most forgettable singles

some dude, Monday, 31 December 2012 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

word

dead cera (J0rdan S.), Monday, 31 December 2012 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

1) call me maybe
2) somebody that i used to know
3) stronger (what doesn't kill you)
4) locked out of heaven
5) diamonds
6) set fire to the rain
7) sexy and i know it
8) part of me
9) we are young
10) one more night
11) we are never ever getting back together
12) whistle

whistle is not among the flo rida songs i enjoy.

i think locked out of heaven and somebody that i used to know are similar in more than just their sting-singing. the first lines of their choruses are basically melodically the same. (love both songs though.)

teledyldonix, Monday, 31 December 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

Fun fact!

In looking at that list I have no memory of the Flo Rida song. Which is probably all to the good.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 31 December 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

"Whistle" is so so bad but at the same time I find Flo Rida's horribleness really hilarious so I am kind of glad it exists
