Instrumental Personality

"Instrumental personality". Artists/groups without vocal performers, especially electronic artists blamed for being "faceless".... can/do they have personality (and of course, should they)? Air and Daft Punk and stuff sort of cheat, but what about, say... Oval or DJ Shadow or Merzbow for that matter. Does Kid606 have more personality than Autechre just because he uses pop vocals? Also... how much do producers like the Neptunes or RZA have instrumental personalities that they exert over their collaborators?

If somebody wants to they can go into how pianists and free-improv people have personality and stuff but I was thinking more in terms of producers in the hiphop/electronic/dance sense.

I think Hank Marvin's personality really shows in his guitar playing.

When it comes to DJs/producers etc., I think they tend to go for the svengali image - in which case, the less exposure the better...
