Hmm, never really a big fan of RATM or Soundgarden but for some reason the meshing of both work for me. I really like this song. anyone else heard it?

Where did you hear it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 September 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

radio. WAAF and WBCN in Boston play it constantly. Its also available for download. also its here

Don't you think they could've come up with a better name than Audioslave? I mean, really, in 2002, there's *NO* excuse for bad band names anymore. Audioslave sounds like a crappy industrial duo from the early 90's.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

but there's no good names left Alex....or are there?

blueski, Monday, 30 September 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard an Audioslave song a few days ago on the radio (don't know if it was "Cochese"). All I could think was "A Zep for the new millennium."

Alex is right - all the more disgraceful when the solution to Audioslave's problem lay right under their noses: call the band Audiochese and the single "Co-Slave."

three months pass...
Just watched this video again and it struck me -- during the filming, how did they hear the track with all those fireworks going off?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 07:37 (twenty-three years ago)

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE SONG! An artistic pothole for everyone involved. I really miss Zach De La Rocha. If you know me, you know that's saying a lot.

Anything remotely attractive about Chris Cornell's caterwauling is gone. Whatever software filters they applied to his vocal track must have worked hard to remove any sort of pleasurable resonance. The riffs on the previous Rage records sounded far more damaged and loose than on this song. (Again, that's saying a lot)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 11 January 2003 08:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Chris Cornell's highlights!

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but there's a lot attractive about his bod, which could still give a lot of pleasurable resonance. well the video was dark, so maybe none of thats true anymore either, maybe things are damaged and loose

Vic, Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, sorry, that was awful

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I still wish my friend was right and that it was Rod Stewart who had hooked up with RATM (he even thought so when he first saw the video, thanks to those dark shadows). Better lyrics would be a given.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I really miss Zach De La Rocha.

Steady on now. I realize it's awful and all, but think about this carefully, deep breaths...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatever happened to the guy from Cypress Hill joining RATM? You know, the guy that just repeated what B-Real (?) had just said nearly every line? It could've been much better than a Brian Johnsoned-out Chris Cornell, that's fer sure.

original bgm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The similarity to "Whole Lotta Love" is disturbing and Cornell cranks up the strain factor on the vocals to an annoying degree, but I still turn it up when it comes on. Heaven help me, I never got over my teenage crush on him. Search: "Like A Stone"...it's got a bit more going on in it. Oh, and it's Cochise, people, give the dead warriors some respect.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 12 January 2003 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the most offensive thing about the song is how NOT HARD AND HEAVY it is after all, given the effort. They've either achieved the ultimate phase cancellation in all the layers they added to this song, or the engineers are so out of touch with what constitutes momentum.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 12 January 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pssst..remember El-P is werking on Zach's new cd ahahaha!!!!

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 12 January 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Audioslave sounds like it would be the name of a music software company.

"Cochese" is not by far their most interesting song, although even their more interesting songs are still excruciatingly "meh".

BTW, the joining of Cornell & the remaining Ragers was Rick Rubin's idea...I say he needs to stay behind the mixing boards. I love the guy, but let the musicians start their bands on their own prompting in the future, duder.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 12 January 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, El-P, as well as Trent Reznor, Dan the Automator, DJ Shadow, and Questlove from The Roots have all contributed to Zack's solo album.

It's my personal opinion that, if it ever is actually released, it might just happen to be THE SHIT.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 12 January 2003 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the band name; I've never heard "Cochese" or anything else by them and I don't want to.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Sunday, 12 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

track #12 (I think its 12, either 11 or 12) on the Audioslave album features a loop of the sound my motorola cell phone makes when it turns on and off, and the verizon logo comes on. I'm NOT kidding you

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 12 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

it might just happen to be THE SHIT.

Drop the 'the' and I'm with you. More seriously speaking, I'll take an instrumental version of whatever happens, that's bound to be sweet.

But I would be interested to see now that Zach is no longer an Angry Young Man (though doubtless still an Angry Trundling Towards Middle Age one) if he could show some finesse and forethought with his excruciatingly awful attempts to politicize everything (poorly) -- and maybe to show something different with his voice.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 12 January 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Zach's one trick screaming was more exciting then Cornell's sad attempts to match it. RATM vs. Audioslave may be further proof that bands need some creative tension to keep things interesting.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 12 January 2003 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

So, I picked up the latest issue of Q magazine over lunch today (featuring Dave Grohl on the cover, tho' no mention of his purported commandeering of the Killing Joke rhythm engine did I spy between its pages, alas), and when I thumbed through the 'reviews' section, I read this:

AUDIOSLAVE
Audioslave
****
21st Century metal supergroup's soaring debut!

It was producer Rick Rubin who first suggested the three remaining Rage Against The Machine members team up with Chris Cornell. The former Soundgarden vocalist agreed on two conditions: he wouldn't sing political lyrics and he wouldn't be the new singer in RATM. And so Audioslave (ne Civilian) was born. The union was not without its teething troubles, specifically Cornell's heroin problems, but their much delayed debut is a remarkable record. The frontman's Robert Plant-like vocals are perfectly suited to his new bandmates' bombastic hard rock riffage, and stand-out cuts Cochise and Shadow of the Sun are as good as anything released by either parts's old outfits - Dan Silver.

Now, for a start, Mr.Silver's dead-wrong about the last sentence, but what's all this about Chris Cornell having heroin problems? Had anyone else heard that, or is this just workaday yellow journalism by the notoriously savage British music press?
