Yeah, the original release about it (which was circulated on Friday) said that the show was today. So I was there to cover it, and nothing -- just a few other folks waiting around. Got in touch with V2 afterwards and found out it's tomorrow instead. Oh well.

I'll put in an appearance... I'm not the biggest WS fan, but I'm sure they're fun to see live. But oy, the NYU turnout...

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 30 September 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, they are fun live. And yeah, it's going to be crazy crowded.

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I live on 12th street (just two blocks south), and I can verify that it'll positively zoo-ish with NYU kids. If you can suffer the indignity of rubbing shoulders with that contingent, it should be a fun show.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I might show up, but I'll have to haul my ass back up to Columbia for a 1.30 class, so I dunno.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 30 September 2002 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it a full show or just a promotional thing or what?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 September 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Alexxx how come you never show at the FAPs?? I want to give you a good fapping.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 30 September 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a full show. They did one at Chelsea Piers last year.

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 30 September 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

full promotional-show thing

cynical hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

What's a FAP?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

'feel alex's pants'

I couldn't. I left during the first song. The people next to me were introduced to their crowd as "Jen" and "Tiffany" and within minutes they were talking about being at some event where they got to meet "Fab and Albert." And then some models showed up at the last minute and pushed in front of me... argh.

There was someone there handing out issues of Blender, and a sign telling me that by standing on a certain geographical coordinate, I'd given my permission to be photographed. I question the legality of that... but I don't think I stuck around long enough to be photographed.

Jody Beth Rosen, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the show was good. They covered "Teenage Head," which was perfect.

I was surrounded by four people wearing White Stripes t-shirts. Yeah, that kind.

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

stay away NY folks. i am very wise. i know what i'm talking abt!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

It was a beautiful sunny day and I stood on the wall by the dumpster and had a great view. Thanks for the tip.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I stayed until the end of "Jolene," then had to split due to prior commitments. Didn't feel too bad about it, though. The crowd was predictably chock full of indie kids and jobless scenesters with ironic t-shirts and ill-advised hairstyles, and it was hot as blazes for early October. Bizarrely, they were playing Counting Crows, Third Eye Blind, Enrique Iglesias and the vileness that is Pink prior to the band hitting the stage (actually, they were playing an ol' time Broadway/John Phillips Sousa/"Music Man" medley when the band actually appeared, but before that). That warm-up music selection seemed a bit incongruous to me. Do fans of Enrique Iglesias and Pink really dig the White Stripes? I somewhat doubt it, but it is a changing world after all....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a fan of Pink and I dig the White Stripes, so yes.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my god the warm up music was among the most inhumane sounds to reach my ears ever... Until they went into the show tunes, that approached aceness. Until the Whites came on and then... I am not a fan--I was just stalking Felicty Redwell--but she was hiding on top of a wall(?) Oh, I overheard tons of celebrity sightings: "There goes...", "Isn't that...", "Look, there's..."

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

A few random killings in that crowd might not have gone amiss, from the sound of it. But be sure to wear your Radiohead shirt while doing so, so you can adverstise your contempt for the plastic world. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 01:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex, I see you spotted me. I so want you to come to the NYC FAP and defend your hair, outfit and musical choices!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Me and my coworker went. It was OK. I wasn't close enough to have a good time. I also have to remember to wear a hat to any of these future outdoor gigs lest my rosacea flare up.

The thing that really bugs me about The White Stripes is that I know we'll never be able to do our laundry together. Did they always wear those ridiculous red clothes in public before they became famous?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw them once in Long Beach right when "Destijl" was released... the answer, Michael, is yes.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The White Stripes' ridiculous outfits are the best thing about them! They're like something out of Dr Seuss.
