Mclaren was like King Midas up until around 1987 when 'Waltz Darling' and 'Something's Jumping In Your Shirt' kinda spoilt everything

Buffalo Girls for me tho...

Wot! best song ever. At first I thought it was some weird late-model Clash tune that I'd never ever heard before by some gross miscarriage of justice. Thank ye Gods for 7-day trials of VH1 Classic. It was stuck in my head for like 3 days. Perfect for air travel.

Now would somebody point out to me where I can purchase a CD that has this tune? That's still in print? That has decent sound quality and is not a live bootleg?

Please?

I've just found a copy of it on Audiognome.

Wot was played all the time in the mid-80's on Long Island's WLIR. As was Buffalo Girls... but I'm guessing the Capt Sensible record is harder to get now.

I found 'Wot' on New Wave Hits of the 80's Volume 6 on Rhino. It is on repeat at the moment and I am terrifically happy.

It seems so strangely futuristic to me and at the same time the lyrics are completely ridiculous. Perfect. If I had known about this record when I was 6 years old or so (it came out when I was 4) I might be a very different person today. Unfortunately the anthem of my extremely youthful days would end up being 'Alex F' instead.

I want to do a ten minute cover version of this thing. Oh God.

"Glad It's All Over" is soooo much better anyway

Can't say for sure that I remember "Wot", but "Buffalo Girls" is one of the most insufferable slabs o' wax I have ever desperately tried to avoid hearing for a second time. Plus the good Captain is waycool, so I gotta go with him.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 1 May 2003 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

"Alex F" = Harold Faltermeyer as played by Matthew Broderick

You guys I have the ultimate insufferable 12" bootleg, "Buffalo Girls" and Chic's "Good Times" on Side A, "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6 and "Da Butt" by EU on side B, 'and I got it at B34T STR33T'

I see 'Wot', in hindsight at least, as being in the tradition of Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Reasons to be cheerful!

Why does Captain Sensible slag off Adam Ant in "Wot?"

What do you think is the most controversial thing you’ve done in your career?
Oh, dear. [Long pause] I remember when rap first started and I did that stupid rap piss-take, I did a song called “Wot.” I thought rap would be around for five minutes and I didn’t think anyone would take it seriously. And how stupid and wrong I was. So I did this song and it was a bloody massive hit! It was number one in France for seven weeks. I couldn’t go anywhere in France without people chasing me down the road, you know? So, not that that was controversial, but I used to come over to New York and go to these black radio stations and they couldn’t believe that I was a white bloke, and a white bloke from England as well. They couldn’t see it.
But “Wot” is a very British expression. Americans don’t say that.
Yeah, exactly. And the whole joke about the lyric was that it was done with kind of an upper-class accent. What I was taking the piss out of was not so much the rap; I was taking the piss out of the upper-class English. You know, stupid English people trying to get down and boogie [note: The Captain pronounced it “Boo-gay”]. [Quoting lyrics,] “I’m aware that the guy must do his work/but the pile driver man drove me berserk!/He drove me berserk, I say!“
And I recall you took a bit of a jab at Adam Ant in that song, who was all the rage at the time.
Yeah, I couldn’t work out what Adam was all about. “Ant Music for Sex People” — what was that all about? What a strange bloke he was. No, he’s alright. He was cute while he had his hair. [Laughs hard] Oh, you bitch!

More recently Captain Sensible explained about the Adam Ant thing on Facebook. Something like they were playing at the same festival and Adam Ant dissed everybody and acted like a diva, so they all concluded he was a knob.
