TS: Dead Milkmen vs. Weird Al

Who was better? Who was more important? Funnier? More relevant? Whose music will age better? Also, I feel like we should assume Weird Al died in 1993 or so since he was clearly shit after that.

and the Dead Milkmen weren't?

I like both, and both were so influential to my sense of humor and view of the world. I have a really hard time choosing.

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 20:54 (eleven years ago) link

I'd put Beelzebubba up against many of my other favorite 80s albums, but Weird Al will stand the test of time better Andi disagree with your assertion that he fell off in 93.

mbvgz (how's life), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 20:54 (eleven years ago) link

and the Dead Milkmen weren't?

yeah, they probably were, but maybe it didn't tarnish them as much.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 20:56 (eleven years ago) link

Today, I am going with the Dead Milkmen. There was some solid musicianships on their albums, which they never really got credit for. Joe Jack Talcum was a really inventive guitarist with a unique sound, and I can't think of anyone else who plays like that.

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:01 (eleven years ago) link

Then Dead Milliken were totally tarnished by the London records years.

mbvgz (how's life), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

punk rock girl is so fucking great

downton arby (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

London Records? You mean Hollywood?

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I would stop their discography at "Metaphysical Graffiti."

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

you wanna hear some solid musicianship? look no further than "Musical Mike" Kiefer's hand-farts on "Eat It"

:C (crüt), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:06 (eleven years ago) link

XP yeah,I alwaysgwt.those two mixed.up

mbvgz (how's life), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

Second "White n Nerdy." And "Party in the CIA" was a nice surprise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A42ZYNno5oQ

These are both such great things to me for such different reasons. Why should I have to choose?

mbvgz (how's life), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 22:23 (eleven years ago) link

love the Dead Milkment, but aside from Big Lizard in My Backyard & maybe Beelzebubba, all their albums have a lot of filler & dud trax. Weird Al has hit numerous higher career peaks & has a longer and more consistent discography.

Al wins!

I don't have a strong opinion, but just based on the number of covers of Punk Rock Girl I'm guessing that that's the only thing that'll be remembered in the year 2050.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 00:54 (eleven years ago) link

sounds like you fuckers are not even familiar with the dead milkmen. Bucky Fellini is solid gold from cover to cover. Every track could be a single.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 01:11 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I mean I bought Big Lizard on vinyl on the day it came out and followed them thereafter, but in the real world Punk Rock Girl is the only thing that has a remote chance of sticking.

Weird Al has a lot of songs that he wrote, but what of those has the chance of sticking?

Here's a question:

Who was funnier? I'm definitely going with the Dead Milkmen here. Rodney Anonymous could have been an amazing comedian or talk show host.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

Spurred by this very thread, I revisited a little bit of Dead Milkmen stuff last night and found the things I laughed at when I was 15, or even into my early 20s, now feel corny and hacky and I feel robbed of the nostalgic goodwill I had for the band. Thanks a ton, Poliopolice! I was perfectly happy remembering The Dead Milkmen they way I remembered them, and not the way they actually are. You've ruined it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 18:11 (eleven years ago) link

Weird Al is so sui generis that pretty much anyone would suffer in comparison. Maybe compare Dead Milkmen to Primus or the frogs?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

classic Weird Al songs I have heard multiple times away from the albums that are originals/pastiches rather than parodies

Mr Frump in the Iron Lung
Mr. Popeil
Nature Trail To Hell
Slime Creatures from Outer Space
Christmas at Ground Zero
Weasel Stomping Day
One More Minute
Dare To Be Stupid
Good Old Days

I also often think of "You'll Dance to Anything" whenever I'm in a club or other public dance venue where people clearly will dance to anything

Punk Rock Girl that is

I'd have to give this more thought than I'm willing to give, but I'm thinking that Dead Milkmen vs. Mojo Nixon might make more sense.

rocky dennis horror show (Pillbox), Thursday, 7 February 2013 03:07 (eleven years ago) link

Answer is Weird Al. I haven't heard much Dead Milkmen other than "Punk Rock Girl" tho.

The "Dare to Be Stupid" video is the best thing ever.

ron paulstretch (crüt), Thursday, 7 February 2013 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

I like a lot of Weird Al's originals. Up until Alapalooza, his originals were pretty solid. After that, it was painful. Nevertheless, I don't think anyone will really "remember" them in the way people are talking about above, where the general public knows them.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 7 February 2013 18:11 (eleven years ago) link

While I think both are amazing, I'm a hardcore Dead Milkmen fanboy (and probably an apologist as well) so I'm gonna go with DM. I sincerely think Not Richard But Dick is an amazing album that I can listen to and enjoy without focusing on the humor in the lyrics. I mean, "Jason's Head"! That song is seriously a killer. "Punk Rock Girl" is fucking all-time...but I never pull out Beezlebubba anymore. I think that Rodney Anonymous is especially grating on that one and on Metaphysical Graffiti. I even think that Stony's Extra Stout is pretty decent...granted I haven't pulled it out in a very long time.

I'll rep for "Frank's 2000" TV," "The Night Santa Went Crazy," "Since You've Been Gone," and the NIN pastiche "Germs." I turned 14 in 2001 btw.

^ Truth!

...and I forgot to say: If we are arguing importance (and I think we are) Weird Al runs away with that category.
