No the X-Men, no credibility. Would have made more sense to split it into the early years, the nearly years and the imperial levels, since Creation is one of those labels that makes no sort of sense when you look at it rationally.

Would take the Pastels over most of these tbh

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 7 February 2013 17:22 (eleven years ago) link

you know who i'm voting for.

That's why I added the 'Other' option, if people in the thread say clearly which band they're voting for that's not on the list, I can tally them up in the thread.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 7 February 2013 17:26 (eleven years ago) link

Like say, if you want to vote for Mishka or Hurricane #1 (god forbid that you do), just say: 'Other - Mishka', or 'Other - Hurricane #1' etc.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 7 February 2013 17:27 (eleven years ago) link

Other - Biff 8ang Pow!

Rob M Revisited, Thursday, 7 February 2013 17:45 (eleven years ago) link

Not having a pop - sorry, I got my tone wrong. It's just that Creation is so many different labels, but it tends to get treated as a monolith because of the constant presence of McGee and Green.

^ I completely agree! ^

Other!

As I opened the thread I was musing whether to vote for The Jasmine Minks, Biff Bang Pow! or Emily!

And the vote goes to The Jasmine Minks (BBP! Made those duff late snoozefests; Emily made my favourite record by any Creation band, "Stumble" but that was after they left Creation).

I love the Jasmine Minks.

ride

well I would vote J&MC but that would be one early single and one late album.

At the time, I loved the
boos, but I wouldn't go back

Voting Super Furries.

Mark G, Thursday, 7 February 2013 18:18 (eleven years ago) link

Always amazes me the number of bands on Creation that I do not give a shit about at all. Definitely voting MBV by some distance, then House Of Love (all their Creation stuff), Slowdive (for Souvlaki, not fussed about the rest), Ride (debut album only), Bodines (for Therese), Swervedriver (couple of good songs, esp. Never Lose That Feeling), Sugar (for Beaster and about two songs off Copper Blue), then everything else. Telescopes I always think I like, and then I listen to them. Have been trying with those guys since 7th# Disaster, but alas no dice here.

Jaap and roids (NickB), Thursday, 7 February 2013 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

Gimme 4AD any day btw

Jaap and roids (NickB), Thursday, 7 February 2013 18:38 (eleven years ago) link

As much as I love some of these bands, none of them have given me the sheer volume of pleasure that Adorable's 2 albums and b-sides have. And continue to do so.

This isn't true at all. My Bloody Valentine were dropped from Creation well before Oasis were signed.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 7 February 2013 20:02 (eleven years ago) link

MBV, then Sugar. I love Felt too but my absolute favourite stuff by them was on Cherry Red.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 7 February 2013 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

others that i hope someone votes for:

chills, razorcuts, pacific, loft, tangerine, westlake, pastels & heidi berry

but i voted for felt because they are of course the greatest.

cw, Thursday, 7 February 2013 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

Felt are pretty great, huh. Still going to have to go with SFA.

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 7 February 2013 23:24 (eleven years ago) link

Voted Ride as the essence of Creation.

Saint Etienne were a Heavenly band; having them here is like Patrick Viera being a club ambassador for Man City.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 February 2013 23:36 (eleven years ago) link

The Jasmine Minks and Razorcuts are both *very* vote-worthy, IMO... as is The Revolving Paint Dream just for the fact that they did 'Flowers In The Sky'...

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 7 February 2013 23:45 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, and The Telescopes too.

Voted Ride as the essence of Creation.

^ this - Ride were kind of like a Frankenstein hybrid of all that was good abt the Creation roster, and I'm voting for them on that basis (even tho MBV is the obv frontrunner)

rocky dennis horror show (Pillbox), Friday, 8 February 2013 02:16 (eleven years ago) link

Ride and Boo Radleys have my favorite albums. I probably like the apparently much reviled Wake Up! the best (I'm from America, where nobody heard it) but would pick Ride overall.

dlp9001, Friday, 8 February 2013 03:03 (eleven years ago) link

The Boo Radleys are my second favorite band of all time!

2. Super Furry Animals
3. The Jesus & Mary Chain
4. Ride
5. Teenage Fanclub
6. Primal Scream
7. My Bloody Valentine
8. Swervedriver
9. Slowdive
10. Adorable

No takers for 18 Wheeler? XD !!!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 8 February 2013 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

They were in my top ten actually. But then I'm odd like that.

Rob M Revisited, Friday, 8 February 2013 15:48 (eleven years ago) link

Swervedriver is definitely my favorite from this list. I would also consider Sugar, but I think of them more as a Rykodisc band.

Moodles, Friday, 8 February 2013 15:49 (eleven years ago) link

Other - The Loft!

(tho voted JAMC)

Ward Fowler, Friday, 8 February 2013 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

Don't forget that Bernard Butler, Nick Heyward and Kevin Rowland were also on the label briefly... although I guess many might want to! :P

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 8 February 2013 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

Hmmm, I have massive residual love for (especially) Primal Scream, Ride, Teenage Fanclub, Boos, and low-level longterm admiration for SFA, but I think MBV will win for me.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 8 February 2013 16:10 (eleven years ago) link

Voted Ride. What they released between January 1990 and March 1991 was awe inspiring and incredibly beautiful to me when I was 15.

Trying hard to think of a British guitar album from the 90's that is better than Nowhere.

kraudive, Friday, 8 February 2013 18:12 (eleven years ago) link

Also: Fuck Oasis. Jesus.

kraudive, Friday, 8 February 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

keep in mind I know jack shit about this scene

classic: My Bloody Valentine

great: The Jesus & Mary Chain, Saint Etienne

ok I guess: Slowdive, Ride, Momus, Super Furry Animals

yawn: Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, The Boo Radleys

fuck this: The House Of Love, Sugar

fun to make fun of: Oasis, most of the above

should listen to: Felt

who?: Swervedriver, Adorable, 18 Wheeler, BMX Bandits, Heavy Stereo, The Telescopes, The Lilac Time, The Membranes, Silverfish, 3 Colours Red

g simmel, Friday, 8 February 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

i'm going with swervedriver.

though i do like the adorable album i have a lot, and actually, those bernard butler albums are rather lovely as well.

agree with this sentiment, but their creation stuff still towers over this list of 75% total ass

69, Friday, 8 February 2013 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

Nobody's gonna rep for Silverfish? I adored "Fat Axl" when it came out.

Were they the only Creation band that the Kerrang! set could get into?

I mean at the time, not like "well, all these shoegaze black metallers love that stuff" line. I don't recall reading anything about most of this list in the UK metal press.

(reading list more thoroughly) I take that back: Sugar was adored by the metal press if I recall correctly. Who I will vote for because My Bloody Valentine and Jesus & Mary Chain will get enough votes without me contributing and "Copper Blue" remains one of the most-played albums in my life ever.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Friday, 8 February 2013 19:15 (eleven years ago) link

3 Colours Red also got coverage in Kerrang iirc, and I wouldn't be surprised if Swervedrier got reviewed in there either

Kerrang covered Sugar, and it was quite high in the RAW AOY list

Was hoping that someone would have at least namechecked the Jazz Butcher. (voted Telescopes myself)

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 14 February 2013 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

or The Legend! - what an artist that was

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

Doesn't surprise me at all that My Bloody Valentine topped the poll, but it has surprised me that there was only one vote for Primal Scream... and I speak as someone who doesn't rate Primal Scream all that highly (I have a soft spot for early Primal Scream, mind).

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah - I know they're kind of at peak unfashionability these days, but Screamadelica always has admirers and I thought that xtrmntr and some of their later stuff was quite well-regarded.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

it is. but its ilm

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:38 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I was pretty much thinking along similar lines! I'm not a big fan of either Screamadelica or XTRMNTR but I'm aware that those albums have plenty of fans. Oasis aren't terribly fashionable at the moment either, and probably haven't been for many years, but they still managed to put in a better performance, which makes me go "wut?". I can't help but suspect that at least one person voted Oasis just for 'teh LOLz', but then again, who knows?

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

actually the only good vocalist was Lawrence

OutdoorFish, Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:50 (eleven years ago) link

You can understand Oasis provoking apathy - more difficult to understand them provoking anything else tbh - but Primal Scream have done enough stupid stuff that you'd think someone would stick up for the rest.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 20:50 (eleven years ago) link

the rolling stones tribute album?

OutdoorFish, Thursday, 14 February 2013 21:12 (eleven years ago) link

There might be plenty of people who like Primal Scream, but who don't think Primal Scream were the *best* band on Creation.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 22:03 (eleven years ago) link

I missed this. I've really been enjoying the deluxe 3CD reissue of The House Of Love's first album and singles, so might have voted for them, though they are not historically my favorites. Also have enjoyed hearing Adorable and The Telescopes for the first time recently.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 14 February 2013 22:07 (eleven years ago) link

It checks out - his wikipedia entry is a godsend.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 February 2013 22:32 (eleven years ago) link

I considered saying "Hello - are you Everett True?". But then I decided against it. He was using a laptop (which seemed quite space-aged to me at the time), probably writing a gig review. Or something else, if it wasn't him.
