Gabriel Fauré recommendations

Anyone on ILM into Fauré? I have a box set which I think has all of his chamber works, a couple of recordings with Requiem/Messe basse/Cantique de Jean Racine, a Sally Pinkas recording of all the nocturnes, an a CD with incidental music he wrote for the theatre. What should I try next? I especially like the calmer religious choral stuff, and the pastoral sound on some of the chamber works. I'mnot that much into classical solo singing or operas, because they tend to sound a bit too melodramatic and theatrical to my ears (and operas should obviously be seen live), but are some his melodiés worth checking out?

Any version of the Dolly Suite--I love the piano four hands versions floating around. And the Pavane is heaven...

Dolly Suite seconded. Pelléas et Mélisande is lovely; I think La Sicilienne one of the prettiest things ever composed.

But I'm having so much foehn! (Michael White), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

Dolly Suite is included on the chamber works box set, and it is indeed lovely! Any recommendations for a good recording of Pavane?

Pavane - great melody, lots o' chord changes that sound cool.

I ended up ordering this disc with Pavane, because it also has "Masques and Bergamasques", which I don't have either. Anyone familiar with that one, is it good?

Also, "Pavane" exists as both as an instrumental and choral version, but I'm only familiar with the choral one. Is the instrumental one worth getting too?

Pavane instrumental -- YES!!

his late pieces are out of this world. get:

the late piano music
the 2 piano quintets
string quartet
piano trio

fauré wasn't really an orchestral composer — a lot of the orchestral versions of his pieces you see on cd are actually orchestrations done by his students or other composers. the original version of the requiem is actually quite spare and intimate.

oh and both violin sonatas — the first is an early piece, the second was written near the end of his life. both are brilliant.

i am willing to assume anything which was orchestrated for him by Koechlin is magic since Koechlin was such a timbral wizard (see also the orchestral version of Debussy's 'Khamma').

I didn't know about the earlier version of Requiem, thanks for the tip! I ordered a recording of it, interested to hear how it compares to the better known one.
