did anyone else believe the hype ?

i don't think there have been any consistent DHR albums but there are some killer tracks:

search - shizuo - 'new kick, cobra killer - 'six secs', fever - 'two poles', sonic subjunkies - ' live at the suicide club', riot zone compo

destroy - christophe de babylon's soundscapes - though he gets HUGE props for playing the Toon, atr albums, stuff by that noisy lass who did white heat, empire's gameboy album

Geordie Racer, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

sorry -search - sonic subjunkies - 'turntable terrorist'. ec80r score for 'spex is a fat bitch' as does christoph de babalon- ' if youre into it, im out of it' ( but only for the titles)

G.R.D. robot, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Search: ATR's 'Future of War' and Carl Crack's 'Black Ark' (really, really good)

Omar, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

FOW trax on riot zone are great, never heard that album, only the first and the most recent stuff, so i'll checkit, ta !

"Harder Than The Rest" is packed with top pop hits which I can't remember the name of except of course for "Discriminate The Next Fashionsucker You Meet (It's A Raver)"

Tom, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hey GR, I think the Shizuo alb IS pretty consistent (love the track that steals from 'Heart of Glass'). Also SEARCH: Alec Empire's 'The Destroyer' (hardcore d+b before Panacea spoilt THAT idea), a great cheapo US comp called 'You've Got the Fucking Power', and 'In Flames' by Hanin Elias (if only 'cos it reminds me of Lene Lovich in places!)

Destroy: The sleevenotes to that ATR live at Brixton Academy mini-alb - ooh Alec you're SO HARD!

Andrew L, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Shizuo.. Fuck step 12" awesome!

jk, Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Agreed, The Destroyer is pretty classic, esp. "Hard Like It's A Pose". Does the Alec Empire vs. Elvis Presley record count, despite the fact that it's on El Turco Loco? That record alone proves that Empire at least had a sense of humour. "You ain't nothin'" indeed.

Dave M., Thursday, 10 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes! Alec vs Elvis manages to be sick and devotional at the same time. Did his girlfriend really walk out on him in tears when he played her the album (or is this the NME making things up as usual)?

seven years pass...

heh ec8or

it's a step up from the battlegrounds: a collection of hardcore cyberpunk comp of mokum crap i listened to earlier, though.

actually, maybe it isn't.

REIGN IN FUDGE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 21 September 2008 11:35 (fifteen years ago) link

alright, it picks up towards the end. i love this cheap amiga shit, the lo-fi low-bitrate stuff sounds so good when done right. "short circuit" is pretty fucked up.

(listening to "all of us can be rich")

Whatever happened to Nic Endo?

I read about Runhild Gammelsæter Amplicon and it reminded me of the time I dug into the noize gurls thing...

pulled out a $0.99 cd comp "You've Got the Fucking Power" and made my friends endure it in the car the other day.

still really dug shiuzo "the man"

back in 98, across the street from the record store i worked at was a palm reading place. the gypsies that worked there would come in and cause a ruckus. they'd ask us to read things to them pretending they were illiterate. kids running around screaming. leaving things where they didn't belong. i'd always put this on to make them leave

I went to see ATR at Reading Festival 1999 because of all the hype they were getting in the NME at the time (lol) they didn't disappoint. I mean, for the first band on the day they rocked more than the rest of the main stage put together

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 5 February 2011 01:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I was at that. But not cos of the NMe I guess I'm pleased to say. Massive fan at the time and I remember running towards the stage in beaming sunshine as they'd already started even though it was midday or something. They rocked though. And now I'm old and I groan when I stand up.

I did not know this! this is my favourite ATR-related thing by some distance out of what I've heard, although "Black Ark" is rad too

going to check out the recs on this thread though as there's lots I haven't heard

(I got a bit snooty about the more raucous/later stuff at the time, if I'm honest, as I knew a few indie kids and metalheads who never listened to d&b/hardcore/techno but suddenly evangelised DHR - more my problem than the music's, I realise from the comfort of 20 years later)

a passing spacecadet, Saturday, 27 January 2018 18:23 (six years ago) link

heh I was probably one of those, although I did used to listen to house and rave stuff earlier in the decade I'd kind of stopped keeping up with dance music by the mid-90s. I liked hardcore punk, noise rock and industrial music so for me it wasn't a big step to liking ATR.

I think I want to hear hypermodern jazz 500 again

― brimstead

hee hee "my funk is useless"

seriously though this album is ... annoying and bad

as sr said "one track is called "my funk is useless". taken literally this is true: there's no use-value to be gleaned from "hypermodern jazz", you can't dance to this music and you can't really chill to it (unless you're some kind of psychopath, or the man who fell to earth)"

the late great, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 18:04 (six years ago) link

this is the stuff i keep listening to. way better than most dhr stuff. someone should reevaluate THIS. almost all of it out of print or impossible to find though. which doesn't make reevaluation easy.

THIS is my kinda hardcore

scott seward, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 18:19 (six years ago) link

xp lol yeah i think "I think I want to hear hypermodern jazz 500 again" every few years, always disappointed

seriously, though, the Carl Crack album is positively brilliant. it's pretty lofi and weird, though. probably makes more sense in the current age, must have sounded weird as fuck in 1999
