I expect "Sister Christian" to walk this, and it should, but the band's 80s run was strong where singles were concerned.

They did enjoy the parenthetical title now and then.

When You Close Your Eyes will always be a great song. Four in the morning is very underrated.

When You Close Your Eyes is so tempting to vote for.

f "(you can still) rock in america" and that entire subgenre of mid-80s FM anthems. (tho "bullshit FM rock'n'roll patriot anthems" would probably make for a great poll...)

I have a certain thing for "Goodbye", and "When You Close Your Eyes" is indeed a great single. But, sorry, got to go with the inevitable, "Sister Christian".

When You Close Your Eyes - Sentimental Street - Four In The Morning is a pretty great run!

I forgot that Secret Of My Success was them.

voted "(You Can Still) Rock (in America)"

btw on further reflection "(you can still) rock in america" would probably win that hypothetical poll. (vs. e.g. "raised on radio," "r.o.c.k. in the u.s.a." etc etc blargh)

inste grammophon (rogermexico.), Saturday, 18 May 2013 19:35 (ten years ago) link

All three of your examples are good songs. Why u hatin?

I was just talking about this the other day, crazily enough ... When You Close Your Eyes is an awesome song and should win this poll easily.

Can you make a Spotify playlist of that? I feel like rocking.

surely Hagar's "VOA" belongs on that list too

omg that list is amazing. nailed it (except maybe Joan Jett is def not bullshit?).

what was your Golden Age of Rock Radio station?

inste grammophon (rogermexico.), Saturday, 18 May 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

btw the "raised on radio" i had in mind was THE RAVYNS (warning: olden times video contains like two minutes of backstory before music begins)

That was the "Raised on the Radio" I had in mind too. I remembered the chorus and assumed the rest.

Zachary Taylor, Saturday, 18 May 2013 22:09 (ten years ago) link

Hunting down old songs I don't really remember from the radio has been a recent hobby of mine. Adding The Ravyns to the list. I recently rediscovered "Mean To Your Queenie" by Point Blank.

Zachary Taylor, Saturday, 18 May 2013 22:12 (ten years ago) link

R.O.C.K. in the USA - John Cougar Mellancamp 1985

Have a soft spot for this, as it was the garagiest thing on top 40 radio in 1985.

(am also reminded that the first time I heard "Cold Sweat" was around that time -- Mellencamp's version)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I don't think "Magic Power" is necessarily a rock anthem, it's just an earnest "turned on some music to forget my day" anthem (and a poor man's "Spirit of Radio".) "She gets the magic power of the music from me" - the singer may not be a musician, he could be a DJ or maybe even the radio itself.

A few more for that mid-80s list: "Cum On Feel the Noize", "We Built This City", "Turn Up the Radio" (Autograph)

If I were a rock and roll timelord, I'd go back to the 80s and create a Night Ranger/Husker Du split 7" with Night Ranger doing "Don't Want to Know if Your Lonely" and Husker Du doing "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" in their respected styles.

earlnash, Saturday, 25 May 2013 02:30 (ten years ago) link

That's just crazy enough to work.

six years pass...

I was at a rep screening of Wall Street last night, a theatre where they often start with a bunch of clips related to the film somehow. The "Secret of My Success" video was part of last night's pre-show. I'm not sure if I've ever seen anything so stupefyingly, irredeemably awful. I've always reserved that designation for "The Final Countdown," but I have to rethink that.

(Stepping back, I also realize there's stuff from the early '70s every bit as bad that I look back on with tolerant amusement.)

Poor Elvis. A worse indignity than if someone had actually dug up his corpse.
