ASG emerge from the sandy shores of North Carolina to deliver their fourth full length and Relapse debut ‘Blood Drive’. Sun soaked groove heavy riffs that reference equal parts Torche and Queens of the Stone Age ‘Blood Drive’ is nothing short of anthemic. ASG have toured the country relentlessly with the likes of Corrosion of Conformity, Weedeater and Black Tusk. But what’s most remarkable about ‘Bloodlines is that any of its 12 instantly memorable songs could just as easily be FM radio smash hits. What sets ASG apart from their swampy peers is singer/guitarist Jason Shi’s voice: this is a set of songs that are truly SUNG by a guy who can actually SING. ‘Bloodlines’ is a kick ass blast of sun that elevates ASG to the level of some of their most well-regarded Relapse label-mates like Baroness and Mastodon.

It's way better than new Qotsa or even the last Torche

Both of these albums are way better than the Baroness album that everyone was raving about last year.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 10 June 2013 16:21 (ten years ago) link

I listened to the ASG album the other day, it didn't grab me, I'll give it another go though.

Neil S, Monday, 10 June 2013 18:20 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I like this. Guy's voice is very pleasant.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 10 June 2013 18:29 (ten years ago) link

Yes, I like his voice.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 03:20 (ten years ago) link

This starts reminding me too much of Jane's Addiction at some point a few tracks in, the vocals at least.

I kinda find the new Kylesa to be their first real disappointment. Not that its a bad album, but it really feels like they are treading water and floundering a bit.

i kant believe it's not buffon (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 01:28 (ten years ago) link

I though of Jane's Addiction too, but that's a good thing for me.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 02:25 (ten years ago) link

I wonder what quality in the vocals is reminiscent of Farrell, since this guy does seem to be much more of a traditionally good singer.

the last asg record had just enough warped tour in it that it was a little tough to get behind. two songs in this one feels much different (in a good way).

I didn't really like the Kylesa record, but I'll be giving this ASG record a try very shortly.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 14 June 2013 21:24 (ten years ago) link

AG is definitely right about this knocking the new QOTSA into a cocked hat!
