it's time for their own thread tbh

not sure that what they're going for quite worked for that video but it's nice to see them enjoying themselves, and the song is very decent

"lay down in swimming pools" remains one of the trax of the year though, incredible stuff

Something bothers me about the video, don't know exactly what... It looks kind of clumsy, maybe. "Flatline" has sort of grown on me but there's still something not right about it.
― daavid, Monday, 19 August 2013 23:38 (ten years ago) link
the steadycam stuff going on in that video was disorienting and jarred somewhat with the smoothness of the track
i'm still more excited for their album than just about anything else

I really doubt that anything other than goodwill and nostalgia for the early noughties is what's driving people's fondness for this, to be honest. "Flatline" is so drab and that video is so misjudged - the distinct appeal of Original Sugababes was that they were moody and serious and intense and not as "fun" as contemporaries such as Atomic Kitten, it doesn't seem anything like the same group.
Also, the name should be Siobhan Mutya Keisha, that was always the order they stood in first time around and it's the order I always think of them in.
― boxedjoy, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link
I sadly have to agree that the single is quite disappointing. I think I mentioned in another Sugababes thread that they've done songs like Flatline before but way better, Ace Reject is the best example I can think of. I so wanted this to be great as they were such a great group for the first four albums and I really like Siobhan's second album too. They sound great together, there's no doubt in that but this isn't the single I was hoping for.
― Kitchen Person, Sunday, 25 August 2013 19:14 (ten years ago) link
"flatline" isn't partic special (though the mnek remix is!) but "lay down in swimming pools" is and the way they're using their voices is. and it would make no sense for them to affect sullen teenagehood these days!
― lex pretend, Monday, 26 August 2013 08:49 (ten years ago) link
That's kinda what makes me think their moment has passed.
― boxedjoy, Monday, 26 August 2013 09:06 (ten years ago) link
i quite like the single, its good grown-up-ish pop, and they sound nice (though it looks like a video for a song that is much happier), but it doesnt have any attitude that you expect from sugababes (production is also not particularly interesting). and yeah, they might not be sullen teens anymore, but mutya still looks fucking pissed off in every photo i see of her so theres no reason they cant do sullen 20-something pop!

OMG
they've just revealed in a Q interview that the reason siobhan left the sugababes initially was due to an argument concerning aaliyah's death(!)
"It was the month that R&B songbird Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash. On a promotional tour in Japan, the Sugababes discussed her in an interview, Keisha and Mutya announcing they were broken hearted fans while declaring Siobhan wasn't, implying she didn't care she was dead. Siobhan, a huge Aaliyah fan, was horrified and Keisha slammed the door in her face. Siobhan immediately quit, left for London alone, located her flight through following numbers along the Japanese airport wall."

& iirc sugababes 2.0 very nearly broke up over an huge argument over "toxic". kinda find it endearing that out of all things pop music proved such a matter of life and death for them.

keisha always did seem a bit snakey on the low
― r|t|c, Saturday, 31 August 2013 17:57 (ten years ago) link
Keisha, 23, said: "We nearly broke the band - it was the worst night we ever had.
"We were 10 minutes from going on stage at the Olympia and the show was completely sold out - there must have been about 2,000 people in the crowd.
"We started having a debate about the way Britney was singing in her song Toxic. Suddenly all hell broke loose. The row was mainly between me and Heidi and it was really vicious.
"I just shouted, 'That's it, I don't want to do the show' and stormed out.
"The rest of them then walked out too and someone had to tell all the fans we weren't performing.
"Looking back on it now it was the worst thing we went through as a band."

The single went in at number 50 this week. They changed the release date to last Friday so it did only have two days of sales but still it had been up for pre-order for over a month. I wonder if they can turn this around with a killer second single?
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 9 September 2013 09:24 (ten years ago) link
even Starship's Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now has beaten them to the Top 40. has this been on an advert or something?
― piscesx, Monday, 9 September 2013 10:09 (ten years ago) link
That is quite depressing. Think it has been used on an advert yeah or maybe itunes has just reduced it? It's pretty crazy how high old songs can get in the charts these days just because itunes have reduced them to 59p.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 9 September 2013 10:55 (ten years ago) link
ehhh don't really care about the chart position, it's not like "flatline" is even an amazing song that deserved to be higher (the mnek remix is ridiculously better). probably if i hadn't heard "swimming pools" or their other new stuff i'd be kinda down on this comeback but i'm just looking fwd to the album. and yeah there'll be better material on it.
― lex pretend, Monday, 9 September 2013 11:05 (ten years ago) link
(also the only truly superlative thing about "flatline" is THEM, their harmonies, so excitement over them is legit imo)
― lex pretend, Monday, 9 September 2013 11:06 (ten years ago) link
'flatline' isnt a fatal blow in market terms or anything (especially since reserves of sentiment will give them more chances than most) but it does seem a savagely bleak portent of them not knowing wtf they're really doing and what possibilities they have available
i only really ever hear it when i click on this thread and tbh it has slowly taken on an sort of enjoyably queasy edge of beckettian grim humour. worst comeback lyrics EVER!
― r|t|c, Monday, 9 September 2013 11:07 (ten years ago) link
like maybe if the music thing doesnt work out they could go into business together putting out other doomed products, a new cereal called diabetes pops or something
― r|t|c, Monday, 9 September 2013 11:08 (ten years ago) link
There is a chance the album might not officially come out though if the second single doesn't do any better surely? Amelia Lilly recently had her album cancelled after her three singles went in at 2, 11 then 40. The Misha B album seems to have suffered a similar fate too after her single just scraped the top 40. The hype was there for MKS but it feels like they left it too long. Radio just didn't get with the song either. I really want this album to be a success for them.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 9 September 2013 11:28 (ten years ago) link

the "candy bling" sample!!
― prolego, Friday, 13 February 2015 17:42 (nine years ago) link
Still don't know what to make of this. Maybe it'll grow on me. I find the chorus weird, like I want them to finish the phrase "Back in the day" but they just start over. Sounds a bit like a skipping record. Other than that it's fine.
― daavid, Friday, 13 February 2015 22:47 (nine years ago) link
Re-listening to "Flatline" (It feels like it came out ages ago), I realize that the whole problem with that song is they harmonized in the chorus. As much as I like their individual voices, I feel like they somehow don't work well together.
― daavid, Friday, 13 February 2015 22:53 (nine years ago) link
totally disagree, the harmonies are the best thing about the band imo?
Still not convinced anything will come from this project. Siobhan does seem to go on a lot of holidays if her instagram is any barometer so at least she's doing well.
― bae sremmurd (monotony), Saturday, 14 February 2015 01:25 (nine years ago) link
oh this is lovely, monotony otm about the harmonies! is it a random demo or anything...actually...official?
i refuse to get any hopes up about this band until the album is actually on itunes
― lex pretend, Saturday, 14 February 2015 16:00 (nine years ago) link

like after a week going "hmm" over the fifth harmony album, which feels very effortful in its attainment of adequacy, this is just so perfectly what i need
― lex pretend, Saturday, 14 February 2015 16:04 (nine years ago) link
and with a beat that sounds like a demo too
perfectly judged mariah interpolation obv, enough for that omg initial frisson but also they transcend it just being a gimmick
yeah, sort of on loop unexpectedly

I only had "Flatline" in mind when I was thinking about the harmonies. Perhaps they just don't work on THAT chorus. But then maybe it's not a coincidence that the parts I usually like the most in Sugababes' song are the verses.
― daavid, Saturday, 14 February 2015 22:56 (nine years ago) link
This is really beautiful.
monotony is right about the harmonies, their voices complement each other perfectly.
Is there even the remotest chance of them releasing an album, or did the failure of 'Flatline' completely kill off that possibility.
