read somewhere about Damon Albarn going to mali, bringing his melodica and striking up jam sessions w/the locals. taking the tapes home and repurposing/remixing them. sounded vaguely interesting (mainly because i love the melodica)

just saw a live concert with what i'm assuming was the rest of blur (don't know what the rest of them look like) and a bunch of malinese (?) musicians. there wasn't much of a 'fusion'. you could tell when blur was playing back up to more traditional african music and when the malinese musicians where supporting a western song.

not sure of the purpose of all this. wondered if any of y'all had read about this or had thoughts on it.

I don't think the rest of Blur were involved.

The Mali Music album is a right dog's dinner, thanks to what seems to have been Damon's assumption that African musicians don't actually compose or think through their songs, they just feel it man, and hence going and recording Toumani Diabate etc. arsing about on their porches and jamming, plus adding 'vibes' to it in London, was going to make for a great musical experience.
