What's the most you've paid for a record/CD/tape/wax cylinder in one go?

...or I Finally Got Back In Denim On CD A Few Months Ago For £20 Which Is Not A Terrifyingly Prohibitive Amount But It's Already Developed A Big Scratch Across It And Is Now Fuxx0red And If Anyone Could Help Me Find Another It Would Be Much Appreciated And Richly Rewarded.

This has probably been done before, but am intrigued to discover the extent to which people put record-obtaining above eating and buying clothes and things.

I don't think I've ever paid more than $30 for anything apart from a punk and new wave box set. The most I've ever paid for a not-huge amount of music was something like $45 for the Cocteau Twins EP box set, and that was only so I could sell off the four of them I'd bought individually -- in fact, I think I made money on that transaction.

I did once see the vinyl version of the Nick Drake box set, which was probably the only time I've ever been tempted to buy something and take it straight to e-bay. But I didn't.

I once paid $45 for a vinyl copy of the original pressing of Kool and the Gang's "Live at P.J.s". At the time I was deep in a funk collection phase and none of this stuff had been reissued (on vinyl or CD) so I was very excited to get it. In retrospect, I was just overcharged by those folks at Groove Merchant for a fairly decent album that happened to be exceedingly rare (which is no longer the case)... it's a little late to feel ripped off tho.

i bought a copy of Redd Kross's ultra-rare "Neurotica" on vinyl for $40... yikes!

Comsat Angels' _Time Considered... BBC Sessions_ for $30. WELL WORTH THE DOUGH.

I have a few boxsets, one of which was a big mistake... the Police were never that good beyond their singles, and some on this board don't like them at all, and I totally understand that!
The other is the John Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard set, which was around $50. It is good.

Recently, the biggest purchase was a copy of Brommage Dub's first record on Svek, which I paid $25 for. It is in perfect condition. Svek does NOT repress anything at all on vinyl. The money was well spent.

I once spent 120 pounds on "the new record by my bloody valentine" which was quite frankly completely worth it. I've got records that would fetch more than that but I ain't selling them. In total I've bought maybe 15 records that cost more than $100 (Australian dollars that is)..

The only records I would pay the same or more for would be by Dolly Mixture. Or perhaps an original Vashti Bunyan LP.

what i meant to say before my train of thought was obviously derailed was that I've got records that would fetch more but cost me significantly less..

Still £32 for Fushitsusha's Double Live.

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 12 October 2002 08:30 (twenty-three years ago)

the most money i spent was 45 dollars (canadian) on the revola reissue of millennium's begin - well worth it.

doom-e, Saturday, 12 October 2002 09:26 (twenty-three years ago)

It used to be Fushitsusha but now I've paid 45 quid for John Tilbury 4CD set called 'All Piano' where he plays Morton Feldman compositions. Brilliant! It isn't a boxset really.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 12 October 2002 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

$33 or something for the taj mahal traveller's _august 1974_. my mom bought me the napalm death box set in the early 90s...think it was $70-80 or so. both were worth it.

your null fame (yournullfame), Sunday, 13 October 2002 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

surely someone here overpaid for tigermilk?

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 14 October 2002 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i paid $32 canadian for the last breeders album. it was a bad situation where i went to a place and the record store guy sort of made me buy something. i didn't feel right leaving without buying something. it's complicated.

it was worth it, though. no kidding.

dk, Monday, 14 October 2002 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

s trife (simon_tr), Monday, 14 October 2002 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

The people I've met who have it were lucky enough to get it when it wasn't rare.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 October 2002 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

$35 for the import of Vision Creation Newsun and it was worth it.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 14 October 2002 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Is the "in one go" in this thread because there are records so staggeringly expensive you have to arrange monthly payment deals on them?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

£160 for the FMP Cecil Taylor in Berlin 10-CD box set in 1990/1 or thereabouts.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 14 October 2002 09:08 (twenty-three years ago)

$25 for Behemoth "Chaotica" 2CD, including shipping from Poland.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

$89.99 for the Harry Smith Folk Anthology Box Set - and a fine box set it is too!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

at once? probably David Sylvian's 'Weatherbox' - $212 = $43/CD? certainly a work of art, and the music's good, exclusive "Gone to Earth (Instrumental)" being the best of the bunch. still, may/may-not have been worth it. as yet undecided on this one.

not in one go. Fallt's Invalid Objects Series - 24 15-minute 3" CDs of "state-of-the-art" microsonic drivel, ranging from audible (at best) to unlistenable, though mostly just dull and immensely unsatisfying. four hefty monthly installments, adding up to $300. compounded by bank penalties due to erratic, unfortunately timed "monthly" charges. the whole fiasco easily cost me $400+, all told. eep. so eager to shed this dead weight, and yet...

single disc - one go. :zoviet*france: 'Monhomische'. $100. worth it? absolutely.

mark is that the chirruping frog box thing?

No -- that was going for around $100. This is just the regular album, but at the time I bought it the stateside release was still 7 or 8 months away.
