this is either Donna Summer, ELO, Bob Marley, Neil Young or as unbelievable for me to say it Fleetwood Mac.

1977 was the best year (and not just cause it's the one during which I was born) and The Clash is the best band, so despite several others of these being v v good, I have to say complete control.

Fuck there really are tons of great songs on here.

Voted "I Feel Love" mostly so I didn't have to choose between Clash songs.

Hard to not vote for Complete Control or Watching the Detectives, but that's what happens when you come out the same year as Psycho Killer.

"Birdland," on a whim.

Yeah, I was weighing Bob Marley vs. the Sex Pistols there, but with Fleetwood Mac, it's not even a contest.

how's life, Thursday, 7 November 2013 13:34 (ten years ago) link

Voted Complete Control before I got bogged down in overthinking it. I might make a Spotify playlist of this.

WilliamC, Thursday, 7 November 2013 13:39 (ten years ago) link

there are about 10 of these I can't imagine choosing between

since I'm seeing Television tonight, I'm going to vote for "Marquee Moon"

Brad C., Thursday, 7 November 2013 14:22 (ten years ago) link

So much goodness. Hard to top I Feel Love in terms of influence and originality though.

Wrong Fleetwood song IMO, much prefer You Can Go Your Own Way.

Confession: I've never liked "Stayin' Alive." I've kind of come to terms with it over the years, and I no longer hate it as I once did, but it still isn't a song that I would ever listen to voluntarily.

xxp sometimes I feel like the Tavares version of More than a Woman is one of my favorite songs ever. the Bee Gees original pales in comparison imo

g simmel, Thursday, 7 November 2013 17:13 (ten years ago) link

Totally; the Tavares one is transcendent. The Bee Gees is karaoke time.

what an impossible task.
many of my top faves of all time, are in this : bowie, elo, clash, television, talking heads, ramones, sex pistols, donna summer ..
genuinely have no idea which to pick.

Ditto on Tavares's "More Than a Woman." The Bee Gees' version is fine--it's them in the movie when the camera whirls in circles, right?--but Tavares make it even better.

Why are We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions listed as if they're one song? I hate that.

Voting Fela, that groove is so sick.

Why are We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions listed as if they're one song? I hate that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Will_Rock_You

. In 1977, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" were issued together as a worldwide top ten single.[7] Soon after the album was released, many radio stations began playing the songs back to back without interruption.[8]

When performed live, this version is usually followed by "We Are the Champions", another of the album's hits, as they were designed to run together.[7] The songs are often paired on the radio and at sporting events, where they are frequently played.[7] They were the last two songs Queen performed at Live Aid in 1985.[15] The songs are also paired back to back on the album, and they are still played together to this day on American classic rock radio stations.

Yay, after a look at the list and a gut-check, I went with "Marquee Moon". But really comparing some of these is like the unstoppable force meets the immovable object.

voted "flashlight", but half wish i'd thrown another point to "ca plane pour moi" (or "psycho killer" or "zombie" or "blank generation" or...)
