i can think of other things - bands - that were similar - say - gay dad, menswear.... these musical revoluations are discounted when the public (and yes there is a public outside of london) gives it a resounding - NO THANK YOU. can you think of anymore examples?
why o why..... hopefully people can see that anybody that looks like simon price is obv. an arsehole. on pure aesthetic grounds...

That's journalism - reporting on stuff that is going on. Now if that piece is a catalyst for the Darkness to actually go on and make something of what they've got, then great. I mean their single has only been released through a v tiny label and could not dent the charts if it tried.
They are not originally sounding, but it didn't stop The Hives or The Strokes making their mark. In these fast times of recycling sounds, we were bound to get to heavy rock sooner rather than later. Look at the Datsuns and D4 go at the moment. Jeez, D4 sing a song called 'running on empty' and The Datsuns sing 'Lady' with absolutely no irony. It's like cocaine for the brain. Dumb, but who gives a fuck.
My personal opinion is that this heavy rock/garage rock period we are peaking on at the moment is exciting, but I am under no illusion that it is having v little effect on places Redcar, Swindon, Bolton or wherever.
There are more publishing companies, venues and clubs in London. It figures that there will be more things happening there - and being written about - that do not happen elsewhere. Nobody seems to have the same problem with London bias fine art coverage of England - I mean who outside london's art or media world uses the expression yba's
If you don't like the sound of what's happening at the moment do not worry too much because it will have changed pretty soon.
Lets all get behind Ten Benson, Mclusky and Mum and Dad that will sort out music's current state of affairs
PS Christ knows which Bon Jovi records you have been listening to that sound like The Darkness

Nah - I can see whatever that you are saying but what I'm saying is that
That's journalism - reporting on stuff that is going on. Now if that piece is a catalyst for the Darkness to actually go on and make something of what they've got, then great.
Is it? Or is it favouritism? HMmMMMMMmmmMMMMMmmmMMMm.....'Hey - let's do a big piece on this ... it will be ironic....'
I find that the more exciting stuff is not being done/produced/etc in the London-centric music industry circles. I find it all a repeating drone of same old/same old - i.e. this heavy rock stuff is great - we are going to hype up any piece of shit....without looking at the actual merits of the band.
Sure, some of the stuff is great, i.e. The Datsuns, etc....but you are not going to tell me that The Darkness/Andrew W.K./some extent The Vines - etc. Is not the beginnings of the hype race of the mediocre.
Hmpf.
I supposed after the SEX PISTOLS/THE CLASH - there was always the SKIDS.

That's the only thing that I dig about the pop culture of London is the frantic pace of it all....otherwise - ....
But saying that - oh - the pop machines are located in London automatically makes it the best/creative place to be is wrong on so many levels.

F: Having management makes a huge difference. Rock and Roll!!!! It’s being part of a great team and growing and rocking and rolling together. You don’t have to be great players or be an expert producer its just about growing and developing together. It’s important to get someone on-board who’s on your side early on and someone who already has relationships with the music industry.
Rock and Roll!!!!!!! this is so not hyped!!!

Been to even more Real People packed gigs that were unattended by representative of the hype machine. Usually on the same night as the above.

Seems to be a decent punk/ska/whatever scene in Brighton, with plenty of gigs going on. Or is that an illusion?

there was that whole period of andrew wk / fischerspooner kinda stuff that never sold

"emerge" was a big club hit, but i think by the time they signed to ministry everybody was bored with it. their cover of "the 15th" by wire was pretty neat, too.

there was a whole period of indie-leaning mags covering shitty major label hype product from like 1990 to 2003. Internet kind of let everyone know the emporor had no clothes

don't record companies generally throw shit at the wall and see what sticks? like they know that 90% of acts they sign won't make it?

that was true at the time, but i guess a measure of the influence of the 'new rock revival' that iterations of their templates, watered down for more provincial/aggro audiences, basically ran the show for much of the last decade in the uk
I wonder if the ska scene in Brighton is still thriving.

In a sense, they were.

Actually, the 'in-park' ents around that time included KC and (presumably) some of his sunshine band (who were fine), and Flo&Eddie as "The Turtles" who I didn't get to see, so who knows what they were like, I don't...
