the singer, not the song

discuss

his songtitles are great for instance

Conor's got that warblee "oh woe is me" voice that just beckons to be sung along with. And with his Desparacidos stuff there is no way you can help yourself.

Or punched repeatedly until he stops singing.

I really liked Bright Eyes... until I heard them (him). Awful voice, songwriting "shows potential" I suppose... but who cares.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 13 October 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard one song, there wasn't a great deal of difference between him and Soul Asylum.

Max Cannon, Sunday, 13 October 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

but at least he never had a video starring Claire Danes and her "angel" within.

Claire (Claire Miccio), Sunday, 13 October 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, his loss. whatever happened to claire danes anyway?

Wyndham Earl, Sunday, 13 October 2002 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Kenan, Sunday, 13 October 2002 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Great review.

Claire Danes has been away at college, by the way.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 13 October 2002 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

actually she just played the role of a mistreated skeleton in Igby Goes Down.

Matos to thread!

I find Bright Eyes pretentious, but in a very endearing way.

The Big Picture however, is a HORRIBLE song and possibly the worst excuse for an opening song I have ever heard.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 October 2002 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

So why couldn't I lay half those slams against melodrama and earnestness on the vaunted Morrissey? With "the big picture" and a handful of other tracks, Conor does do himself in. He seems to put his own dramatics over the importance of the song. Still, that doesn't take away from the fact that there are some great tracks on the album.

And in general, the only thing that gets an eyeroll outta me faster then a critic making fun of Conor, is one making fun of Bono.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 13 October 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that review was pretty accurate. I try and try to enjoy it, because I know there's -something- good in these songs.. but I just can't bring myself to really like them at all. I just can't take the lyrics, or maybe not so much the lyrics themselves, but as the reviewer said.. they sound so naive and earnest in the way they're sung.. I can't relate or take it seriously. I usually don't have to relate to music to enjoy it, but when the songs focus so much on emotions and personal issues, it becomes important.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Sunday, 13 October 2002 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Ugh.
Why is every remotely positive piece written about them some bloated, doe-eyed, hyperbolic gush-fest?

Steph (Steph), Monday, 14 October 2002 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The sad thing is, there are other members of the band--talented musicians, actually. Yet Oberst is the only one who seems to get any attention. Probably because he pleads for it so flailingly.

probably because his cast of musicians is always revolving. my pal, steph, plays a mean bass for him! is that you. steph?

No. Sorry to disappoint you. It's only me.

Oh, Good Lord. Am I among a cadre of Bono fans? Should I stop reading this list now, before I start losing sleep?

Kenan, Monday, 14 October 2002 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Can open, worms everywhere.

The short answer: Morrissey understands, and in fact has a finely-tuned sense of, irony and wit. Oberst just bludgeons you over the head with his own precious "sincerity."

Kenan, Monday, 14 October 2002 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

BNW - judging by the cpl of Bright Eyes tracks I've heard Morrissey's delivery is much better - much less ostentatious pausing for effect. Also he's got more range in his voice. Kenan is also right in that "sincerity" is not what Moz is about - you can take him as seriously or not as you need to.

Kenan - generally U2 fandom here runs at a low ebb but there are some posters who are sick of the easy-target aspects of picking on U2.
