The Livid Festival (Streets vs Morrisey & other impossible choices)

I've just handed over a ridiculous amount to go to Livid on Saturday, and to get my money's worth I will have to plan my day very very carefully. Here's the timetable. So would it be wise to check out 15 mins of Moz and then zip over to the Streets, or should I just choose one? Mercury Rev or Dirty 3??? I shall see Mogwai. Are there any other unmissable/decent acts on the lineup?

Is anyone else here going?

whatever you do, avoid john butler trio at all costs.

see the lucksmiths if it's sunny.

i'm seeing the nightmares on wax solo show tomorrow night so i'll post back as to whether he's worth missing oasis for...

minna (minna), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Screw Oasis. Of course I must see N.O.W. They have a pivotal place in hardcore history! "PLAY AFTERMATH NOT THIS NEW SHIT!" I shall shout.
But yeah thanks Minna!

'LIVID is an all ages event. Photo I.D required to purchase alcohol. Stage diving and moshing are prohibited.'

That seems a bit miserable!

Robin Goad, Monday, 14 October 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i am. i'm bypassing morrissey for the streets. i've seen mercury rev's last two tours and they've been brilliant, much better than their recent recorded stuff. can't wait to see mogwai. the line up in the annex tent seems better than any of the rest. check out gerling if you get a chance. dan brodie and the broken arrows are always worth watching too - they make me sweat like a rockpig and i like that. i'm probably one of the few people who'll be bypassing oasis (saw them in london a few months back, yawned lots). minna's otm as far as john butler's concerned. enjoy.

angelo (angelo), Monday, 14 October 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna see:

Lucksmiths -> Seafood -> D4 -> Trail of Dead -> Int Noise Conspiracy -> Dirty Three (or Mercury Rev) -> Morrissey

I'd have considered Mogwai if their last album hadn't been so painfully dull.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 October 2002 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

your day starts off great then gets considerably worse.

keith (keithmcl), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

keith's in a bad mood today :)

I can't say I'm too enamoured with the headlining acts, Morrissey being the best of a mediocre bunch at best. I haven't made my mind up about the Streets' record but I have made my mind up that I've no interest in seeing them live.

There's virtually no Australian act other than the Lucksmiths (and the D3 I suppose) worth seeing for the entire day.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

You will see Morrissey. He is in top form these days. You can catch that Streets character anytime. You will not regret your decision.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Ignore Nightmares On Wax - saw them Sunday, shithouse ain't the half of it. "And on percussion...Shovell!" - I shit you not...(yes, it was that gimp from M People). And if there's one man who should never have been given a microphone, it's George Evelyn...10 years of adoration ruined in 70 minutes of cliched mush.

How's about an FAP Sydney at Livid this Sunday then?

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

you bastards in Melbourne get The Lucksmiths! I'm sure they're a Sydney band...what gives?

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 01:55 (twenty-three years ago)

nar the Luckies are Melbourne through and through. Did you see them on their last Sydney tour?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope - like a fool, I stayed away, even tho they played Sydney about 4 times. Still, I'm sure they'll be back...soon.

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 02:13 (twenty-three years ago)

You missed out! Their support band were completely brilliant too

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, don't worry about all those other artists, "The boys of SUM 41 are a veritable tossed salad of the music that drives today's youth."

I can't wait to sample their "Punk Rock, Hip Hop and Skate Rock" which is no doubt "like butter on toast to these leaders of the new school."

I know I'll be watching them at 8:45, my gnarly deck under one arm, coke bottle bong under the other! After all "SUM 41 rise to a new low in quality street music."

Orange James, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, um... unfortunately charlie was right - n.o.w. was snoresome :(

minna (minna), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 04:30 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry to be right but...well. it's a curse! and now i'm doomed to have to endure oasis instead! aaargh, foresight isn't always as useful as its write-up would suggest...

I'll say this again - Sydney FAP sunday?

Charlie (Charlie), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

If anyone in Melbourne wants to FAP with me, I'll be at V/Vm's show at the Rob Roy on Sunday nite..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

V/Vm's in Melb? Is he coming to Syd??? (hint: Say yes!)

Charlie (Charlie), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes! This friday night he's on in Sydney. Details thus:

18th October >> dualPLOVER presents << 8pm Start - Level 2, 144 Cleveland St. SYDNEY

VVM / Suicidal Rap Orgy / Deano Merino / Billy Bob Handjob / Goulbourn Pigeon Fanciers Society
Sweden / Hamperman

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 05:32 (twenty-three years ago)

gentleman and a scholar you are - what's dualplover, sounds like an interesting enterprise according to their site - S/D?

Charlie (Charlie), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 06:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard nothing on the Dual Plover label (other than perhaps Pimmon) but they do excellent prices for CD pressing...

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

You missed out! Their support band were completely brilliant too.

Those Tugboat wankers?

;)

I'd not heard about that V/VM show, James, so I guess I'll see you there. Goulburn Poultry Fanciers Society are heaps better than V/VM re: pop cutups, BTW. Saw him do lots of amazing things along the lines of distorted Lionel Ritchie/Luther Vandross, etc. up in Newcastle last year. Brilliant far beyond irony.

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 09:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not going to Livid but I saw Morrissey last night and he was in great form. I was surprised how talkative he was.

Amarga, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Livid was utterly totally fantastic!!
I saw Mercury Rev, Mogwai & Dirty 3 all in a row and it was a trilogy of intense psychedelic madness! Warren Ellis was wasted and hilarious but still played like a god, and he asked for requests. At the end me and some others shouted "EVERYTHING'S FUCKED!!!" and he said 'It's like asking Don Mclean for American Pie or Led Zep for Stairway' and then played something else, but it was mindblowing anyway.
With my swift step I managed to see half an hour each of Morrisey and the Streets despite them being on at the same time on the opposite sides of the grounds. Moz is totally on form and what a guy but pity I didn't see him do any Smiths. In the middle of 'Lets Push Things Forward', Skinner said 'Anyone like the Specials?' and my face lit up (more than it was already!), and he started singing Ghost Town!! It was huge fun with lots of call & response crowd-participation madness.

Dan Brody also fantastic, and D4, International Noise Con & UNKLE pretty good too.

What a day! Hooray!

Keith McD (Keith McD), Sunday, 20 October 2002 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh ooh and Mogwai did some amazing feedback drone shit, and when the Streets did Weak Become Heroes they projected the great video which I'd never seen before. And there was an extremely generous stranger with a bunch of fat spliffs standing next to me and my bro when we watched Dirty 3. And did I mention the breakdancing?! Top top top stuff

Keith McD (Keith McD), Sunday, 20 October 2002 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw V/Vm @ newcastle TINA and he was good but i got into a ruckus with some trendy hippies who would not let me dance and kind of ruined it for me - apparently they'd interpreteed mr V/VM's 'ladies to the front' call as being totally serious and thought i was a bogan becasue i didn't have black clothes or an ironic mullet.
Kevin blechdom was fucking great though,as were the new pollution
Not that any of this has anything to do with Livid.

threemetalinsects (threemetalinsects), Sunday, 20 October 2002 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Livid was great. I only saw five minutes of the Lucksmiths, thanks to their stupid playing time. Seafood were excellent but played an identical set (choreography included) to their previous night at the Evelyn. I thought the D4 were complete rubbish. Trail of Dead were pretty good but the instrument trashing seemed kind of strange since there wasn't really that much energy in their performance. Gerling were surprisingly rock for the dance tent, and rather ace indeed. International Noise Conspiracy were also excellent, but straddled the line of offense with a slightly misjudged political rant.

Dirty Three and Mogwai were loud and brilliant. Mercury Rev were good but this being the third time I've seen them, I found them a bit boring this time round.

Morrissey was in fine voice and really rather good.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 21 October 2002 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and Oasis were total shite. Maybe Liam could try clearing his throat.

V/Vm last night were hilarious.
