I care/don't care if you diss your own songs

Have you ever felt put out when an artist says bad things about a record of theirs that you like?

Morrissey not liking 'What Difference Does It Make?', for example.

Or do you think that artists are bad judges of their own work?

What if they said 'Of course, that song was just a joke to see if anyone noticed'?

"Oh yeah, we weren't being serious!" = "Oooh, aren't we clever for tricking you." Artists making you feel stupid about liking something of theirs tends to taint ALL of their music for me, because I can't believe in their sincerity anymore (of course when the "joke" is up front from the beginning, it's a completely different story)

On the other hand if the artist just says they don't like their song, they could have done it better, it didn't turn out right etc. I don't let that affect the way I feel about it. When you're too close to your art you tend to hyperfocus on its "faults" (I do anyway) the things I make that I think are really crap are usually the ones everyone else likes best.

Also, the artist may have had a stroke of brilliance but they can't remember what was brilliant about it - so they write it off as worthless. I know that's happened to me before - not in music but in visual or written art.. I'm not calling my self/work brilliant necessarily - but work that may have had a deep meaning to the artist as it was created, and then the thought was gone. It was important at the time, but now it seems stupid.. but someone else may have latched onto it, and it was, in fact, inspired.

I didn't think the question was that bad.

I didn't post because I thought you hated this thread.

I think this is a great thread idea! Unfortunately, I can't think of any good examples right now :( I find my tastes often align pretty well with the artists. When the Dismemberment Plan released Change I was terribly disappointed by the falsetto on the chorus of "Following Through", which had been a favorite when I saw them live. I read an interview shortly thereafter in which Travis said "I really wish we hadn't done that." Slightly vindicating, but the song is marred forever, damnit.
