HMV in Reading about a year ago. There was something playing which sounded like I'd imagine you'd get if Faust were produced by Mad Professor - it turned out to be Satta! by Boozoo Bajou.

Most recently was in Rough Trade, it was the "Hard Drive" Greensleeves Rhythm Album and the guy happily recommended lots of other stuff to me too.

Most unsuccessful was once in Select-A-Disc where I ended up with a Quickspace single. What sounded like an awesome bass sound on the shop's stereo turned swiftly to fuzz on my crappy outfit.

Best that happened to me - Brian Eno asking what was playing. "Stereolab". "Oh so THATS what they sound like". (Actually Andrew L was the askee but I was there).

Last time this happened, it was in Virgin Records, Tottenham Court Road, and the answer was the fucking DATSUNS. Har har har har har.

I wonder if the server is free yet...

What one's the Hard Drive rhythm?

seanf, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

It's on TOK's "Pengeleng" and Elephant Man's "Log On", and my favourite track w/it is Breeze's "What The Hell".

Acid Mother's Temple, something off New Geocentric Worlds... at Earwax in Brooklyn, NY. They've never sounded as great to me as that one time. Maybe because I was hearing them with virgin ears, and it was the best five-minute snippet of a 35 minute song...

Diego (dhadis), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

the last things i asked were all either ed or ambrose at non/sense, and they were safety scissors, the diwali ryhthm album and bogdan raczynskis 96 drum'n'bass classics thingy

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

There was more actually, but my snobbery prevented me from admitting to the real clunkers

One was an Erasure belter, following which i left the shop in self disgust, crying and the other one ended up in me having a row with the guy behind the counter.
I insisted that the Velvet Crush album he was playing was Teenage Fanclub.

The last time I was in the Rec and Tape Ex in NHG they were playing a nice-sounding electronica/acoustic pop thing, and I was surprised to learn that it was Vincent Gallo's 'Music For Films' rec - I'd sort've written him off as a style mag blowjob hype act.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm too shy to ask.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

i ask abt recs sometimes when I'm at THESE.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I ask pretty often in secondhand shops, if I like the sound of whatever it is. Sometimes they note that I am a middle-aged man in a suit, and assume I won't understand anything more modern than, say, Phil Collins: "It's called drum and bass", and you have to explain that you're wondering who it is exactly, not what sort of strange futuristic noise it is.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

one time i remember is i was in a place and they were blasting "Hot Child in the City"--it sounded great, so of course i had to ask, because who can remember it was by one-hit wonder Nick Gilder. I was able to score most of his albums for a few bucks, there are actually quite a few decent power pop moments aside from hot child.

g (graysonlane), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The last couple of times I've asked, the answers were Ash and Godspeed YBE.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not a snob, just a bit shy. But the last time this happened (in a Tower records) it turned out to be Primal Scream's Blood Money. I think I asked because the guitars were reminding me of the Cure.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

When last I asked (at Contrast Records in Providence) it was the first Firebird Band 7". I asked because it sounded like The Van Pelt, who I adore.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I do this all the time. Well, not all the time, but often.

This is basically how I got into Arabic music: I asked someone in an Arab restaurant where they got their music.

Last I can remember off the top of my head was Cinematic Orchestra's "Motion" at HMV. (In this case the cashiers seemed very approving of my purchase, which is rarely the case these days.)

Of course I do this in clubs occasionally. Sometimes I annoy people by being gringo and not understanding the Spanish names as pronounced without a gringo accent.
