it's funny, dude got into nashville as a songwriter, but has gone from having writer credits on all but one of the songs on his debut to only one on his last non-spring break album

that's bizarre but i sort of dig dude recognizing where his truest talents are and just going with it

was that an xpost about the "thun thun" video

i do love "drink a beer" and "roller coaster", the former is quite moving and i think rather atypical for him. most of his music is not actively bad but rather boring/ignorable and i rarely have a strong opinion either way. however i do outright dislike "play it again," "country girl" and maybe others i've forgotten. lol i also enjoy "rain is a good thing". i would like to say i prefer him when he's being kinda dopey/goofy as opposed to his more frat-broish presentation but then again "country girl" is absolutely terrible so

very few mainstream country guys these days write their own songs

i'd heard "country girl" and stuff but "that's my kind of night" is when he first really made an impression, in part cuz that song was like the official moment where boyband music was fair game in pop-country's gradual consumption of whatever was hot 15 years ago in pop

strip away the banjos toppings and I LOVE SWAMPS lyrics and you've basically got "Larger Than Life"

well luke's got gentler songs too. but more broadly my point is that it was some late-'90s/early-'00s pop business, the logical progression after darius rucker

(and to further it along, i don't think it's a coincidence that "hick-hop" is came 15 years after eminem)

I get the Rucker comparison -- basically a good time dude who talks about partying more than he actually parties and doesn't want to piss anyone off. That's why he's crossed over while Brantley Gilbert and Dierks Bentley haven't. I don't dislike him but other than "Buzzkill" and "Drunk on You" he's a flat EKG reading for me.

I've actually liked Rucker's country material more than Bryan's.

"Drink a Beer" is ridiculous but I generally like his songs, love "All My Friends Say" a lot and I think his borrowings from R&B and hip hop are more "progressive" than duetting with LL Cool J

yeah personally i love the weird sort of paradox in country where saying "hey didn't we all blast the marshall mathers lp in high school" gets you labeled a "progressive"

ha i saw this dude two nights ago at a country festival here, def thought he was basically boyband hooks x bryan adams. none of his stuff was actively amazing (though after florida georgia line it was so welcome), the hookier and more uptempo the better. that "drink a beer" song made me want to cringe into a ball though, absolutely abysmal
