So I'm gonna sit right here
On the edge of this pier
Watch the sunset disappear
And drink a beer

#1 country song in the USA right now btw

still love "someone else calling you baby"

"Buzzkill" works. I prefer Dierks Bentley though, often not by much.

one year passes...

he's supposed to be Bad Country right?

i've really liked every song of his i've heard

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 March 2015 18:43 (nine years ago) link

"roller coaster" "crash my party" "drink a beer" "drunk on you" "play it again" i love all of these songs

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 March 2015 18:54 (nine years ago) link

did you leave out "that's my kinda night" on purpose?

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 18:58 (nine years ago) link

+ "country girl (shake it for me) & "that's my kind of night" xp

johnny crunch, Monday, 9 March 2015 18:58 (nine years ago) link

dude made a series of spring break themed EPs

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:02 (nine years ago) link

every march since 2009

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:05 (nine years ago) link

apparently "checkin out" will be his last, as at 38 he's decided he's said all he has to say about spring break

i didn't think i had heard this one but it turns out i definitely had ... the t-pain song!

i really prefer the ballads though

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 March 2015 19:12 (nine years ago) link

for some reason i was really surprised to find out that he basically writes none of his songs

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 March 2015 19:12 (nine years ago) link

his dedication to spring break is really inspiring

he always seems embarrassed dancing at award shows but apparently, in front of shrieking fans, dude really gets in the mix

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:14 (nine years ago) link

this one from spring break 6 (hehe) is great

it's funny, dude got into nashville as a songwriter, but has gone from having writer credits on all but one of the songs on his debut to only one on his last non-spring break album

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:18 (nine years ago) link

that's bizarre but i sort of dig dude recognizing where his truest talents are and just going with it

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 March 2015 19:19 (nine years ago) link

was that an xpost about the "thun thun" video

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:20 (nine years ago) link

i do love "drink a beer" and "roller coaster", the former is quite moving and i think rather atypical for him. most of his music is not actively bad but rather boring/ignorable and i rarely have a strong opinion either way. however i do outright dislike "play it again," "country girl" and maybe others i've forgotten. lol i also enjoy "rain is a good thing". i would like to say i prefer him when he's being kinda dopey/goofy as opposed to his more frat-broish presentation but then again "country girl" is absolutely terrible so

dyl, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:21 (nine years ago) link

very few mainstream country guys these days write their own songs

dyl, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:21 (nine years ago) link

he does have the best teeth in the biz

dyl, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:21 (nine years ago) link

i'd heard "country girl" and stuff but "that's my kind of night" is when he first really made an impression, in part cuz that song was like the official moment where boyband music was fair game in pop-country's gradual consumption of whatever was hot 15 years ago in pop

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:22 (nine years ago) link

fit well with "cruise (nelly remix)"

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:23 (nine years ago) link

i don't understand the boyband connection

dyl, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:25 (nine years ago) link

strip away the banjos toppings and I LOVE SWAMPS lyrics and you've basically got "Larger Than Life"

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:28 (nine years ago) link

hmm yeah i guess so, i always think of the gentler boyband songs when i think of boybands i suppose

forgot to mention that i also really don't like "that's my kind of night"

dyl, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:32 (nine years ago) link

well luke's got gentler songs too. but more broadly my point is that it was some late-'90s/early-'00s pop business, the logical progression after darius rucker

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:33 (nine years ago) link

(and to further it along, i don't think it's a coincidence that "hick-hop" is came 15 years after eminem)

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:35 (nine years ago) link

A lot more hard rock guitar than Backstreet had on these kind of songs though

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Monday, 9 March 2015 19:47 (nine years ago) link

I get the Rucker comparison -- basically a good time dude who talks about partying more than he actually parties and doesn't want to piss anyone off. That's why he's crossed over while Brantley Gilbert and Dierks Bentley haven't. I don't dislike him but other than "Buzzkill" and "Drunk on You" he's a flat EKG reading for me.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 March 2015 19:48 (nine years ago) link

yes and references to trucks

xpost arrrggggh omg guys basically i'm just saying whatever was pop in the sticks is fair-game for country 15 years later. hootie got inducted into the club, then cute boys humping the air, eminem, etc

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link

I've actually liked Rucker's country material more than Bryan's.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 March 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link

"Drink a Beer" is ridiculous but I generally like his songs, love "All My Friends Say" a lot and I think his borrowings from R&B and hip hop are more "progressive" than duetting with LL Cool J

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 9 March 2015 19:57 (nine years ago) link

yeah personally i love the weird sort of paradox in country where saying "hey didn't we all blast the marshall mathers lp in high school" gets you labeled a "progressive"

da croupier, Monday, 9 March 2015 19:59 (nine years ago) link

ha i saw this dude two nights ago at a country festival here, def thought he was basically boyband hooks x bryan adams. none of his stuff was actively amazing (though after florida georgia line it was so welcome), the hookier and more uptempo the better. that "drink a beer" song made me want to cringe into a ball though, absolutely abysmal
