Brian Blade Fellowship

I finally picked up Perceptual, the second Brian Blade album, and I can't help but think that a lot of people who don't normally listen to jazz would like this if they heard it. I don't think it is quite jazz anyway, even if it's played by jazz musicians. Post-jazz perhaps, since there's post-everything else? Anyway it's just beautiful music with lots of through-composition and folk influences (or at least acoustic and pedal steel guitars). And Joni Mitchell sounds spooky.

I have yet to hear anything Blade has played on that was not made better by his presence. He just exudes such positive energy.

Saw him play a couple of months ago and, yep, still great. There are few musicians I love watching more than I love watching him.

Haha great revive. Didn't know there was another one of those, thanks Tyler!

For the record Season of Changes and Landmarks are my solid gold BBF albums, although the first two are still amazing.

I finally got to see them earlier this summer, and it was just as locked in and magical as ever. One of those bands that is really their own world when they get together. I got chills when the front line sax players would play those lines, especially when one of them (I always get Myron and Melvin mixed up, sorry) would switch to bass clarinet. Jon Cowherd is the heart of the band, and of course Blade is a genius. He can be the quietest and most sensitive drummer, and then pick these moments to drop the biggest bombs that only he would pick.

They played some new material that they said they would record...someday.
