i'm not 'into' jazz enough to be back out of it again. but coltrane is an offputter

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

just the concept of being 'into jazz' makes me shiver.

I'm not sure I was ever really into it or am now of it, but I think going to see Charles Gayle was a turning point. My reaction was kind of like, "I really don't like this free jazz stuff as much as I thought I did." (On the other hand, three of the CDs I most want to buy at the moment are jazz, and only one is by Sun Ra.)

"just the concept of being 'into jazz' makes me shiver"

I can understand why you might say that Michael - in fact it sounds like the sort of thing I would have said myself once upon a time ("I'm a punk rocker, why would I want to listen to old farts music?!") but I suspect that it's your concept of what jazz is or signifies that's the problem here.

You'll come 'round to it eventually....

Out of jazz in the sense of bop redux ad nauseum: The cult of chops.
Out of out jazz: The cult of "chops don't mean shit, maaaaan."

still plenty of 'free' stuff to get into: but marsalis and all would prob say it ain't jazz.

Partisans, purists, snobs and tradders.

I'm sorry that Gareth finds Coltrane 'offputting', 'cos those harsh, 'monumental' improv marathons are only part of the story - a lot of his recs are melodic, swinging, v. approachable and beautiful, too.

Funny, seeing and hearing Gayle for the first time got me more into jazz than I was previously.

w marsalis (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

if anything those harsh improv marathons broke down the "monumental" aura around coltrane that was putting me off
