Nothing as yet; still very much into it.

less so than i used to be, i was disappointed by the os mutantes stuff, and i didn't like caetano velosos 67 album, the whole beck/byrne thing was a bit of an offputter. i still like a lot of brasil stuff, but those dropped my interest level a little (s'labs co-optation was embarrassing)

Salsa. I haven't really gotten out of Brazilian music, it's just on the back burner. I never really got far with it.

Gilles peterson

That second compilation of Brazilian pop David Byrne put together shoved the whole thing right on the 'back burner' for me. I was also disappointed by Os Mutantes Gareth - wow it's a late 60s psych-rock band except Brazilian. I think this is one of those things I'll come back to though.

"Roots".

Wyndham Earl, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I realized Menudo was more fun.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Daniela Mercury.

There's a lot of shit out there if you know where to look! Personally I reserve my ire for overproduced sentimental MPB. cf Djavan, Guilherme Arantes, most Joao Bosco, and a stack of others that don't come immediately to mind that many Brazilians appear to love uncritically. Oh and live albums. Almost every album in Brazil seems to be swiftly followed up by the album of the tour and it's almost always gruesome 'I can't hear you...' sing-alongs and screechy guitar solos, regardless of the genre.

Daniel_Rf is wrong, very wrong

vic (vicc13), Thursday, 17 October 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

vic has never heard hordes of Portuguese schoolgirls sing Mercury tunes with an affected Brazilian accent.

Haha, "Roots" indeed - though most sensible people lost faith in that scene after "Arise", the breaking up of Volcano and "The Laws Of Scourge".

the premise behind this thread is dumb X infinity
ooh, i used to like this, but then some uncool person said it was cool, and all these uncool people started liking it, so i had to stop

ffs, grow up

gershy, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

Well in fairness, people do give other reasons, and the thread was just asking.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

stating that you find tropicalia overrated - perfectly fine

stating that you've lost interest in brasilian music because of beck & david byrne - wtf? who cares (believe me, i hate mr. byrne, but that doesn't factor into my listening to os mutantes/tom ze etc. at all, or not listening)

gershy, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

I tried Tropicalia, but I never really got anywhere

Tom D., Tuesday, 20 March 2007 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

Once I realized that nothing would top Africa Brasil and Expresso 2222.

"i didn't like caetano velosos 67 album"

*speechless*

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

Do you guys know that Brasil is really fucking big?

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

I mean it's kind of like saying "Eh, I tried The Beatles and Christina Aguilera - I don't think I'm too keen on American music."

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I'm too keen on the Brazilian music I've heard - how's that?

Tom D., Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Dadaismus, have you heard of a little tunesmith named Antonio Carlos Jobim?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

How about a wordsmith named Vinicius de Moraes?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

Old news

Tom D., Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

Never got out of it, but got (much more quikcly) to a point where it seems liked I'd exhausted the field of consistent stuff. i also second the comment way upthread about overproduced sentimental MPB.
