oh damn i see the pornography poll was actually bumped today.

Bee OK, Thursday, 6 March 2014 03:29 (ten years ago) link

Very fine album; for me the pinnacle is The Drowning Man - a perfectly psychedelic & terrifying descent into some oblique & fogged inferno

if these were live songs then the best song on here is "Faith." since this is the album poll i think i'm voting "Primary." time to dig out my remastered version and perfect timing as it's has been gray out here in Los Angeles.

Bee OK, Thursday, 6 March 2014 03:32 (ten years ago) link

(I'd have All Cats Are Grey a very close second, for my part - similarly psychedelic & dislocated, if perhaps a little less intense)

Ha! I bumped that Pornography poll because I have been reading (don't ask why) the very worst Rock Biography in the world (I wanted to read a bad rock bio, and wow, did I ever pick the worst) which basically rates Faith and then Pornography as pretty much the two worst albums in the world, let alone albums by the Cure, which is like... WAHT. WHY ARE YOU WRITING THIS BOOK THEN. I think Faith is consistently underrated, compared to Pornography, because that one is such a furious, angry, relentless album. But I actually think that in some ways Faith is darker, because it's just so flat and bleak. It is one of the best artistic depictions of a certain state of mind - granted it's not a state of mind that most people would *choose* to spend any time in, that hollow, empty, meaningless grief state, smothered in this grey alcoholic fog. But I find such a comfort in this record.

Probably gonna go for All Cats Are Grey or The Drowning Man but I love Other Voices and The Funeral Party, too.

"The Drowning Man." My least favorite of the doom trilogy

this is a good record guys

All Cats Are Grey is essence of Faith to me

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Thursday, 6 March 2014 14:07 (ten years ago) link

I used to be all about "All Cats Are Grey" back in my teenage gloom years but nowadays I'm all about "Primary"

death and darkness and other night kinda shit (crüt), Thursday, 6 March 2014 14:10 (ten years ago) link

I love Primary but more as a single. It's such an outlier on the album. I prefer the foggy painkiller gloom vibe. The production on this record is so good.

The title track, of course!

OutdoorFish, Thursday, 6 March 2014 18:38 (ten years ago) link

best cure album apart from disintegration, for sure, may even be better than disintegration if it weren't for the majesty of plainsong

marcos, Thursday, 6 March 2014 18:47 (ten years ago) link

also if you really like this vibe than ariel pink's "the doldrums" will be magic to you, if you weren't aware of this already

marcos, Thursday, 6 March 2014 18:47 (ten years ago) link

Really baffled by primacy of Disintegration in Cure discussions - for me, the 17 Seconds thru The Top run is crazier, more thrillingly evocative music by far. What am I missing?

this is "All Cats Are Grey" for me, which is one of my top 3 Cure songs of all time (the others being "The Same Deep Water As You" and "Siamese Twins" and no, I did not consciously attempt to dole out favorites across the FPD trilogy, it just happened that way)

every song on this album is amazing, though

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Thursday, 6 March 2014 19:35 (ten years ago) link

I just listened to this last night, but now I'm going to have to listen to it again, goshdarnit.

Yes, me too. I personally rank everything The Cure did between 1980-1985 above Disintegration and everything they did from Wish onwards below it.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Thursday, 6 March 2014 20:35 (ten years ago) link

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Disintegration as much as anybody, but I couldn't call it my favourite Cure album. It's Faith for stadiums, basically, and far too long.

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Thursday, 6 March 2014 20:38 (ten years ago) link

songs worth a vote on this record, in no particular order:

1. The Holy Hour
2. Primary
3. Other Voices
4. All Cats Are Grey
5. The Funeral Party
6. Doubt
7. The Drowning Man
8. Faith

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 6 March 2014 20:40 (ten years ago) link

i think i voted primary my #1 in the artist poll? anyway, primary.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 6 March 2014 20:41 (ten years ago) link

IIRC "The Funeral Party" is my father's favorite Cure song

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Thursday, 6 March 2014 20:44 (ten years ago) link

I just watched something that was talking about how a well known musician was seriously influenced in their career by listening to All Cats Are Grey on acid. Can't remember who now. Voting Primary but this whole album is great. I bought some repress recently that sounded pretty good. Faith / 17 Secs are stunning on a 2 sides of a 90min cassette.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 6 March 2014 22:30 (ten years ago) link

I like three of the four Disintegration singles, a couple of the album tracks, and will destroy the rest.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 March 2014 22:38 (ten years ago) link

for me the pinnacle is The Drowning Man....(I'd have All Cats Are Grey a very close second...)

xo Do you mean Marc Almond hearing it on his first E? That's the story I've heard. I can imagine it sounds pretty special on E.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Friday, 7 March 2014 00:01 (ten years ago) link

have no idea why the Bloodflowers poll didn't come out right in that original post. speaking of i was in a Vons and "Maybe Someday" of all songs came on, such a strange song to hear in a grocery store.

Bee OK, Friday, 7 March 2014 02:16 (ten years ago) link

Yes, the Marc Almond story. Thanks for the reminder and correction.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 7 March 2014 04:46 (ten years ago) link

All Cats Are Grey by a mile. It could be my favourite Cure song.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 7 March 2014 04:47 (ten years ago) link

I think I voted primary over it in the artist poll but whenever I put this on the funeral party is my favorite in sequence so the funeral party it is

da croupier, Friday, 7 March 2014 06:08 (ten years ago) link

Failing the option to vote for Carnage Visors, I went for The Drowning Man.

my stories are boring and stuff (Branwell Bell), Friday, 7 March 2014 09:09 (ten years ago) link

so i did play this today and Simon's bass playing is superb, the remastered version really brought it out for me this time around. i also think i might have underestimated Faith. i have always rated Seventeen Seconds over it but right now i'm not so sure.

Bee OK, Saturday, 8 March 2014 03:40 (ten years ago) link

listen to seventeen seconds again and you will be

OutdoorFish, Saturday, 8 March 2014 06:46 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, Seventeen Seconds has always struck me as a handful of amazing songs with a lot of filler. While Faith is pretty much a perfect album.

All Cats Are Grey without hesitation, and this is one of my favourite Cure albums, too. I have to perform strange mental snapping actions to listen to the Cure without disturbing the fetid pools of embarrassing teenage memory, but it's worth it.

poor fishless bastard (Zora), Saturday, 8 March 2014 10:50 (ten years ago) link

Is there much love for 'Doubt'? I've always felt it was a little out of step with the rest of the record and more like a throwback to Easy Cure.

MaresNest, Saturday, 8 March 2014 11:49 (ten years ago) link

I love Doubt in context, it's such a bratty little song. It might be a little out of step, but I do think that it works in context, the final burst of anger before the resignation of The Drowning Man.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 10 March 2014 00:01 (ten years ago) link

I have to go with "All Cats Are Grey", I think it was my number one in the artist poll. It's such a perfect song, the drums, the bass, the keyboards, the vocals, the distant piano notes at the end. It's gloomy yet aerial at the same time, like an out of body experience.

It just kills me that I can't also vote for "The Drowning Man", which has always been another huge favorite of mine

LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 10 March 2014 06:11 (ten years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 00:01 (ten years ago) link

Wow, I expected All Cats Are Grey and The Drowning Man to tie. Glad I voted for The Drowning Man (heh, nearly typed the droning man) then.

I went to one of those reflections shows in Sydney - the best of the 3 albums live was 17 secs I think - something about seeing the band as an era-appropriate stripped-back 4-piece was really special - but Faith was great too - and the encore with all the singles and b-sides was the best ever

anyway Faith is great
