Which of these artists from this mid-90s "Matador Catalogue" do you most want to hear?

This was stuck inside the liner notes of a Yo La Tengo album I dug out to listen to this morning.

Linked because these are HUGE:

(OK, I cheated with some of these and picked the funnier album title. I am not going to type out the full catalogue.)

I wanna vote for the blurbs

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Sunday, 23 March 2014 11:51 (ten years ago) link

The blurbs are all fucking amazing but I'm not typing them out.

(The best bit is that The Electric Tie Rack are just The Quadsmen coloured in paisley. So perfect.)

I like how they just threw in the Gin Blossoms doing At Home He Feels Like a Tourist on the Brian Brain tribute album

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Sunday, 23 March 2014 12:03 (ten years ago) link

And lol abt the Electric Tie Rack, I've owned this and never noticed that

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Sunday, 23 March 2014 12:03 (ten years ago) link

I suspect that many of these refs were in-jokes w ppl they knew or dealt with.

(I'm voting for Unsanitary Napkins, of course. Dude I think we played with them at Ladyfest haha ;) )

Ha, I'd never noticed this either.

The Shitheels is a Dean and Jerry reference (while recording promos for their film The Caddy, Jerry says, "How was that, ya shitheel?")

Other YLT Jerry references include, but are not limited to, the liner notes to Jerry Lewis Just Sings repurposed for one of their CD singles.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 23 March 2014 12:38 (ten years ago) link

Not really that up on obscure YLT in-jokes, but was Mick Smiley a real person? (Googling reveals only a Mick Smiley who wrote a song that ended up on the Ghostbusters soundtrack?)

The fake catalogue made me dig out Everything Is Nice, and jesus fucking christ some terrible music happened during the 90s. I think I would much much much rather listen to any of YLT's fake bands than ever hear anything by the Jon Spencer Booz Explosion ever again.

Oh please, this is so obviously "Heroin! The Musical"

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 23 March 2014 15:12 (ten years ago) link

Most convincing blurb is probably Buddy Williams's, soooo generic. Brian Brain tribute has the best album cover. Probably most interested in hearing Electric Tie Rack - Shitheels might be cool but a double CD of them is more than anybody needs. "Habeas Corpses" sadly passed over.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 23 March 2014 15:24 (ten years ago) link

My favourite blurb is probably Künstler, actually. But I am a sucker for cod-German. "Sich auf DJ Komputerdisco, Atelierfest amusieren" is so Dieter off Sprockets I can't resist.

awesome, gotta go with Künstler - s/t

brimstead, Sunday, 23 March 2014 17:53 (ten years ago) link

Mick Smiley's "got his own album to do", apparently. Horrible 70s album titles like I've Got My Own Album To Do

Think I'm going with Künstler, too.

Voted G.I. Joe Extreme. Seemed the most hilarious to me as a teenager, still seems hilarious to me for reasons I can't quite explain.

Ha I'd forgotten about these. Hope this thread reveals more injoke and artwork sources!

I would like to a) hear Künstler and b) tell everyone I used to be in the Unsanitary Napkins. However, the poll seems to be for the former, so...

I voted Saxual Healing btw just cos it could easily've actually existed. Tho so could the Buddy Williams, prob

Really wish "Throbbing Lobster" were a band; TG covers in a Maine Fisherman stylee.

You had great style (and style is worthwhile) (Branwell Bell), Monday, 24 March 2014 09:43 (ten years ago) link

Throbbing Lobster was real life label in the Boston area, and Oedipus was the WBCN DJ who'd play the stuff in the clubs on commercial radio:

OMG, I remember Holy Cow, they used to play the QE2 in Albany all the time. Wow, like all these tiny local labels and compilations back in the 80s, I remember them. (Our local series was called "Hudson Rock")

So pleased to be finding out all the in-jokes behind this artefact. It's great.

You had great style (and style is worthwhile) (Branwell Bell), Monday, 24 March 2014 10:26 (ten years ago) link

Holy Cow had a kinda Psychic TV thing going on, didn't they? I recall a cover of Jesus Christ Superstar's "93 Lashes".

Yarl Kastremski (bendy), Monday, 24 March 2014 13:41 (ten years ago) link

I always got Holy Cow mixed up with Sleep Chamber. I thought Sleep Chamber were "Psychic TV with a really pronounced Boston accent" which made it impossible to take anything they did seriously.

(Trying to remember if my band supported Holy Cow or if it was my friend who played in a crappy industrial band, god my memory is really going.)

(Now I am going to have to go and dig through 8 billion crappy band flyers I did in the early 90s to find out which one it was NO NO I AM NOT, I AM GOING TO GO AND DEAL WITH LAMBETH COUNCIL.)

once more unto the DUVOON (Branwell Bell), Monday, 24 March 2014 14:14 (ten years ago) link

My band opened for the Lambeth Council once. Right nice bunch of lads

waterbabies (waterface), Monday, 24 March 2014 14:16 (ten years ago) link

Oh hey I played guitar for the Lambeth Council when we supported Sleaford Mods back in '94.
