I just agreed to write an article on electronic music for my college's monthly magazine.
Other than message boards, I've never written about music for the public so I was wondering what you people think an interesting, persuasive music article should have.
My aim is to expose people to and possibly interest them in experimental electronic music. I want to focus on the Warp Records brand of electronic music (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, etc). However, I think a lot of the people who will read this article will know very little about electronic music, and if they do it will be the type of techno that you'd hear at a club which is not where my interestes lie.
Therefore, I was thinking of starting off with a little history of the genre- Perhaps mentioning Varese and Stockhausen and the like and then tracing experimental electronic music's development over time.
I'm worried no one will care though; that people think this music is just a bunch of noise or that it isn't a valid art form.
It can only be 1 or 2 pages (6000-10000 characters). I know a lot of people here are music journalists so I thought I might get some helpful advice. Thanks ahead of time.

For that length, my advice would be to write about something very specific that you know well. Maybe write an article about Warp, if that's what interests you, possibly framing it as a focal point for the IDM scene as a whole. I think it would be difficult to bring Stockhausen and those guys into it, with that length. The profile for electronic music in the US has never been higher, so don't worry too much about what people know coming in. If you think it's good music that people might enjoy, explain why.

do like me and stall as long as you can by writing godawful sex-puns on the Calvin Johnson vs. Steve Albini thread. it really works!

Don't bother about trying to justify it as a valid art form - people's minds on that qn wont be changed by a 2 page article. The idea is to get people to listen yes? So talk about how you listen to the music and the great things it does for you and THEN chuck in a para about the history so as to suggest you're not just some crank. Leading off with Stockhausen wd make for a 'real page turner' I ph34r. And tell at least one funny Aphex story so as to humanise things.
