Most profound song ever

Now why would I think that, I wonder

dave q, Thursday, 17 October 2002 06:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Sandra Bernhard kicked your ass?

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 17 October 2002 06:39 (twenty-three years ago)

wasn't it something like:

"be with you girl, it's like being low
hey hey hey, it's like being stoned"

something like that

ddd, Thursday, 17 October 2002 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

more or less thats it.
I used to sing it during Karoake because few people had heard the song and knew how it was supposed to be sung.

Do you ever getting the feeling that your leg is being pulled?

mt, Thursday, 17 October 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
maybe it was like being stoned because he had the munchies, if you catch my drift

You're funny!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 03:00 (twenty years ago)

I like this song, but not as much as I like Sandra Bernhard.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 03:01 (twenty years ago)

yeah, brilliant song. the re-recorded version on their new "greatest hits redux" album is pretty cool - much rawer production, more empty space, which makes the guitar lines hit harder. stereogum linked it a while ago, i think, and didn't like it.

I like that song a lot too! In fact, I "remember" back in '94, visiting with friends, when "Low" came on the radio, making one of my more grandiose stoned/idiotic proclamations to the effect that "10 years from now, this will be regarded as one of the three great ROCK singles of the '90s, up there with 'Epic' and 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'!" Yeah, OK, whatever...

Myonga Von Bonghit (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 07:04 (twenty years ago)

It IS one of the great ROCK singles of the 90s. No question.

Vornado, Wednesday, 22 March 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Ew. I preferred "Happy Birthday to Me: "Hey, remember me? I crashed your wedding."

nabiscothingy, Wednesday, 22 March 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

I still like it. I remember being surprised to discover it was the Camper Van Beethoven guy. (Same deal with Breeders/Pixies around the same time.)

thirteen years pass...

This song just came up on the Lonesome Jack podcast. I thought it was dumb back when it came out, it's still dumb.

It's pretty good in terms of Cracker, but mediocre in regards to Camper Van Beethoven.

Verses >>>>>>>>>>>>> chorus

Cow_Art, Thursday, 14 September 2023 18:29 (two years ago)

"Like some junkie cosmonaut" is a clunker of a line.

Cracker's last release, Berkeley to Bakersfield, is really outstanding I think. I like this song, but the album it comes from is better. The spacey slow country surf tunes from this and The Golden Age are their sweet spot more than the rock tunes imo.

I like how it interpolates getting high (stoned) with being low. It's like Steve Martin's "let's get small" routine. And walking the street behind a green sheet of glass a million miles below their feet feels so much more like being stoned than floating above everyone would to me. My friend interviewed Lowery around the time that this song was taking off and he was kinda bummed that everyone heard and sang the chorus back to him as "I like being stoned" instead of "It's like being stoned" but that was probably one of the keys to the song's success, people love to sing "hey hey hey I like being stoned!" like it's in opposition to being with a girl who's bringing him down, but it's really the opposite, she makes him feel like he's high.

Big Dipper is probably my fave Cracker song.
