Inspired by a return to LTTP, which has gotten better since I listened last. I used to think that the first seven tracks made a near-perfect mini-album, but as soon as C Brown showed up, I would lose interest. Nothing to do with #Breezy, or my dislike of his continued career; it was my response to the music. A moot point, anyway, because this last time, the back half, while looser, has held up way better. "Shades", for instance, has become one of my favorites now.
I pitted it against Armor On because 1) its my favorite of the post-LTTP albums (& I will vote for it here), 2) it's one of my favorite albums of the decade, and 3) my impression that this was post-Dirty Money release that is most unanimously beloved by ILX.
I feel like LTTP might win. The songs are stronger and fuller, it is more expansive, and as I said before, it stands up remarkably well as a whole for all its spiralling ambition. Yet Armor On is still almost perfect in the precision of its flow, in its willingness to think outside the box, and the way it treats track sequencing , as a higher form of songwriting.
Seeing how this goes, I might pit LTTP against other albums in the near future, including New Amerykah pt 1 and Kaputt.
