ooof - those AD boots ended up going for like $300. about one-sixth of the retail price, but still. they were definitely in "used" condition.

lauren, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

oh wow those pop art shoes are ADORABLE. I wish they came with a speech bubble attached, Lichtenstein style.

i bid on a pair of the justin lacers on ebay, but i wasn't near a computer when the auction ended and thus no boots for me. i'm kind of glad i lost, though - with shipping and then new half-soles, i'd barely be saving any money versus the cost of a new pair.

lauren, Friday, 31 October 2008 13:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Whoah I am kind of in lust with the kiltie lacer.

yeah, that's what i've got my eye on.

lauren, Friday, 31 October 2008 13:51 (fifteen years ago) link

We'll just have to coordinate so as not to wear them to the same gatherings. Altho Ally and I kind of regularly show up in same/similar boots, too, so...

i am glad the justin boots are a hit on the shoe thread! still haven't received my orders in the mail but SOMETHING should come soon, i should think.

i wore the red ones to work today. am expecting black ones in the mail. (also ebay)

i'm telling you guys, they are like the perfect boots. solid, durable and pretty.

ok, barf

czn (cozwn), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 04:10 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, fuck that. let's think up more ways to make it so that women can barely even walk, all in the name of fashion. what century is this again?

T-PALIN (daria-g), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link

i hear you, but how many of those will actually be produced? and worn rather than kept as a fashion trophy?

lauren, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 17:59 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean, i don't think that's going to trickle down to mainstream mass production.

lauren, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 18:00 (fifteen years ago) link

nah, steve madden isn't going to knockoff those shoes, surely. i'm starting to get pissed at all the ridiculously high and painful and unwearable shoes, season after season lately they seem to be getting worse, plus the models getting more and more deathly ill (looking at pix of the 90's skinny models following kate moss, they look healthy now!).. i don't know. i LOVE fashion but it's like, f*** you miuccia prada, all sorts of interesting theoretical things to say about women and their clothes, and your shows are all incredibly, miserably sickly thin white women in 6 inch platform heels that they can barely walk up and down the runway in! WTF. enough. they look TERRIBLE.

T-PALIN (daria-g), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i agree; it's gross.

lauren, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:23 (fifteen years ago) link

totally
it's like, extremes in art are interesting to witness and they push limits, push us to think more, see the world differently, translate these feelings into our lives, etc., but when such extremes are witnessed in fashion, whether fashion is a medium of art or not (i mean, i believe it is, in many cases), then we see some very real physical and social consequences that aren't just a 'translation' or interpretation of art into life but like this direct adoption of a metaphor. and it seems that none of the creators or promotors are going "i was being hyperbolic LOL!", they're all just watching it go on like it's some hilarious on-stage farce that has nothing to do with real life and consequences.

and by 'they' i'm not saying we're not all implicated on some level, but yknow, wait, i'm not an academic anymore: art is one thing but popularization of the 6"-heel as 'powerful' is some fucked up misogynistic bullshit.

this is mostly how i look at it, tbh.

What are some good ankle height boots to wear with work pants (with a low or no heel)? I'd like some simple ones I can pull on and wear all day. Kind of like the DM Chelsea boots I used to have, but a bit more professional.

hey guys i got these boots the other day!
and they were 30% off! and they are comfortable and warm and timberlands, which i trust (so far)

those are nice! they look really warm, too.

xpost to rrrobyn

guys i had a mini-breakdown the other days when i realized i have ~three pairs of "nice" shoes that aren't falling apart bc they're cheap. and one of them is too big for me, as i realized when i was walking to the party i was going to. i felt slightly ridiculous about it; my sister kept very reasonably suggesting that we turn around so i could change my shoes and i was all dramatically like, "I HAVE NO OTHER SHOES!" and for some reason i was almost in tears? v. embarrassing.

anyway, i need nice shoes and i guess i'm going to have to pay real money.

daria, those are fantastic. i have no idea about caring for snakeskin, though! any i've had has been vintage and already kind of messed up to begin with.

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 20 November 2008 19:33 (fifteen years ago) link

they remind me a little bit of v westwood pirate boots.

lauren, Thursday, 20 November 2008 19:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Zexy! I will have to try them on--I've seen them at David Z, and maybe Bloomingdales. But if I was only go to go for one big-ticket boots purchase this year, should those be the ones? I want something casual that can be worn with jeans and sometimes skirts. I'm thinking I should maybe pick something plainer and more streamlined?

Warning: Nobody buy these shoes: http://davidzinc.stores.yahoo.net/jcwingtip-blk.html

The "leather" on the toes will flake off after two weeks when you've already thrown away the box and receipt and when you try to take them back to David Z after two months they won't accept them.

P.S.: I got 2 new sneakers

http://shop.vans.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product2_10001_25104_10101_302951_-1 black/black to wear to and from work

and

but in a darker plaid

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

^^I didn't get those John Varvatos Jack Purcells (as if) but simply regular JP's in a comely brown/olive/red plaid.

one month passes...

my current options are DMs (no good with suit trousers) and dress shoes (too dressy). need something to wear for academic interviews, conferences, being an adult, etc. thinking about maybe some clarks:

crepe soles seem like they are pretty useless in a non-desert situation. true?

caek, Monday, 29 December 2008 11:08 (fifteen years ago) link

I need to get these before new year so my options are limited. Please take sides:

"Ebony Vintage" boot

"Cajun brown" trek

caek, Monday, 29 December 2008 13:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I'd have to go with "Ebony Vintage" as it will look better in an interview. Having said that, I'm no authority, as the only shoes I own are a pair of black M&S lace-ups that pinch, it's like wearing a couple of crabs.

snoball, Monday, 29 December 2008 13:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm leaning toward them but because of the colour, which looks like it goes better with more stuff than the cajun thing. i am interviewing for academic jobs though, so these are probably both more than smart enough.

caek, Monday, 29 December 2008 13:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Current pair are some discreet-but-rugged Timberland shoes, that I can't find a picture of. Very tough, with the consistency of a boot but the shape of a sturdy shoe. Precisely the sort of thing I'd recommend.

baby got bahn (country matters), Monday, 29 December 2008 13:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I feel that timberland are both not gay enough and too gay for my hobo academic styles

caek, Monday, 29 December 2008 13:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I suppose it comes down to the shape of your feet. For me, the centre seam on those "cajun treks" would be irritating. I would prefer to wear something as similar as possible to a Chelsea boot, hence my "Ebony Vintage" pick. Unfortunately neither is an option in IT, where you're scrabbling around all day in a comms cupboard but still expected to wear shoes that look like they belong to a minor member of the royal family...

snoball, Monday, 29 December 2008 13:15 (fifteen years ago) link

cosign on 'Ebony vintage' they should go with dark navy/charcoal grey/black, the other ones, that color of sole makes them harder to wear IMHO.

i got some duck boots for christmas, they are really ugly in a great way (also i walk everywhere & don't have anything for rain/snow)
